Hi everyone,

This is quite an open-ended question, but that's exactly what it's intended to be:

What do you want from Hijack?

The reasoning behind this thread is two-fold:

  1) We are looking at how to expand Hijack and its range of features.  Every so often, a new feature is introduced that we think will make the site better e.g. the Faces gallery, the production forum
  2) Hijack is nothing without its members, so we would like to know which features and services you would find useful that would contribute to our aim of making Hijack a leading central resource for the music and arts scene in Bristol

Possible responses could be:

I want to find out about music events going on in Bristol
I want be able to buy tickets to events through Hijack
I would like to hear about film/arts events as well as music
I would like to use Hijack to meet like-minded people

Please let us know about what is lacking and indeed, what you like about the site.

We look forward to your input.

Regards,
rit and the rest of the Hijack team

I'd like to be able to use Hijack to look at a calendar and check what is happening on a particular date, much like SmokeRing. The event threads are still essential, but it's not as easy as heading onto SmokeRing or Ents24 etc to look for something happening on a specific day.

ok so now a serious reply now that I got that out of my system  Bad Teeth

I think an event photo section (similar to faces, but for events!) would be great, so many users start "photos from xx night" threads (especially lately) that i think it'd really be a welcome and needed addition... i mean as much as i love haveing to scroll 50 different ways to see photos, i think the faces gallery is more organized.

could be accessible by all members, but for simplicities sake probably just the few that take and upload pictures?

good exposure for the nights too so the promoters and clubs usually love it  Two Thumbs

we already do this in nc and I  Heart it loads, i want something similar for Bristol darnit!

Seeing as the site is so closely tied in to the vast majority of Bristol's good nights, I think some kind of all-encompassing events listing calender would be great, along with the ability to purchase tickets for nights too. Give the Bristol Ticket shop a run for their money, I say! I think they need it...

To everyone requesting the events calendar: the work is already in progress and will be coming soon, firstly in a more basic format (including sending reminders about events that you've flagged, so you don't miss them), but then with loads of bells and whistles.

Also, ticket sales is something I've been wanting to add for a long time now, but need to sort out the logistics of online credit card payments at an affordable rate so that booking fees are no higher than in shops.

 Two Thumbs

Give us more suggestions, inspired by your "wouldn't it be handy if..." thoughts.

I'd like a decent event calendar Two Thumbs

I'd like to be able to turn on sigs at work Roll Eyes
That means no nudity, swearing, huge flyers or flash chatrooms!

I'd like to override forum settings according to IP / login pairs. NERD ALERT!
This means I could setup sigs & tomato red for home, and no-sigs & grey for work.

I'd like some way of filtering out the crud - a checkbox on each thread labeled "this will interest Shinny" would be perfect Bad Teeth
Actually - that's a serious suggestion. It moves too chuffing quick for an old-timer like me. Would a slashdot style rating system work?
Maybe allow a largish group of users (like lesser moderators) to assign a thread a category, or number there-of such as "important, serious, music, event, funny, inane, xxx, benj...". Then I could filter out (or at least reduce the priority of) threads I'm unlikely to be interested in.

They're my thoughts on the subject Grin

Also, please don't be afraid to think outside the box.  It doesn't just have to involve music. In fact, please include other stuff that you're into - this site has become more than just Bristol music culture; it tends to cover a lot Bristol culture in general, although this does tend to be the overlap of the parts of Bristol that music enthusiasts are interested in.

e.g. do we need a food/restaurant guide or is it enough to just have threads in the forum on the subject? or would you like cinema listings from places such as the cube and watershed?

I'd prefere it if the main forum was seperated from stuff that was directely music related to stuff thats general waffle, like 'whose the prettiest boy on TV', and 'how do I get those nasty cum stains out of my girlfriends school uniform'.

You know so you can log on either to have a chit-chat or search for some music news gossip - that probably wont be up on the BBC or NME web pages  Smashed

I think this is potentially a good idea, separating a 'general' board from a 'music' board. My only concern is that most people would frequent the general board, and miss a lot of the music info.

Yeah, this has already come up several times.  I believe that it's definitely not in the interests of the board to separate music from non-music threads.  If a filtering system becomes available, then fine, it should all stay in one place.

Thing is, threads are rarely clearly defined - they certainly don't stay on topic that much. Music threads meander into banter and drivel just as easily as stupid threads morph into discussions about who's playing at what night this weekend and whether you're going.

Exactly, and having observed forums that have everything in one place and forums that have things split up, the ones with many split sections are nowhere near as busy, and each section tends to develop its own small set of users rather than contributing to the site overall.

Obviously, I want suggestions on the usability of the forum, but this thread is also about how you'd like Hijack to make your life easier, organise your social life, etc - TELL ME WHAT'S MISSING Wink

The trouble is once a useful thread descends into banter, it becomes difficult to extract useful information posted later on. Much as I luvs banter as much as the next girl, I ain't reading through a few hundred posts of banter to spot a serious post I may be intersted in. Angry

ok so now a serious reply now that I got that out of my system  Bad Teeth

I think an event photo section (similar to faces, but for events!) would be great, so many users start "photos from xx night" threads (especially lately) that i think it'd really be a welcome and needed addition... i mean as much as i love haveing to scroll 50 different ways to see photos, i think the faces gallery is more organized.

could be accessible by all members, but for simplicities sake probably just the few that take and upload pictures?

good exposure for the nights too so the promoters and clubs usually love it  Two Thumbs

we already do this in nc and I  Heart it loads, i want something similar for Bristol darnit!

i repeat my original suggestion which seems to have been lost admist the calendar replies.

Cinema listings would be cool(cube and watershed, not odeon and veu) and art gallery exhibitions. Do it in the same calendar as the events. Make that calendar iCal compliant too Smiley

Some kind of karma thing? Though I'm not sure we need it...

Better search. It still does some weird things. Will have to think about that a bit.

A way to stop whale posting nonsense after he's just been to the pub  Bad Teeth

A way to stop me posting nonsense after I've been to the pub  Bad Teeth

Myspace link under avatar/in user profile as per web addres/MSN - seeing as so many people have it.

A proper FAQ that goes beyond the thread Jim started. Could link to relevant threads (Where can I get a job? -> Benj's rants about council work....). If the sites search was really clever this could sort of get built itself... like what google do Wink

Slightly stronger moderation. Not censorship but moving, say, picture threads from night X into the original advert thread for night X.

Ticket booking would be good, but dangerous!

more like rit's page but for events, like i said - like the faces gallery, but accessible by certain users (ie: those who took the pictures) and viewable by all.

hell yes, a place where people could leave recommendations on specific restaurants/reviews by category (indian, chinese etc.) would be great
cinema, art and live band sections eventually in the calendar would be awesome also
finally if the calendar was searchable by genre as well as date this would be nice too.
ooo and possibly a section for reviewing records and stuff

yeah I definatly need a Hijack function that stops me posting after several litres of cider.

I think a handy function would be more profileness, I like to find out about people (cos I'm nosey) maybe combine with faces, something that says a bit about a person, plus any nights they're invloved and links and stuff to mixes, plus then people wouldn't have to have such big sigs as they could put flyers and stuff in their profile.

Also I want the option to be a techno specialist instead of a dub specialist  Grin

Seeing as the site is so closely tied in to the vast majority of Bristol's good nights, I think some kind of all-encompassing events listing calender would be great, along with the ability to purchase tickets for nights too. Give the Bristol Ticket shop a run for their money, I say! I think they need it...

 Script

Obviously we aready know this is in the making -but it is greatly needed, because I still find the search a really bad tool...I can never find what I am looking for  Undecided
I also like the idea of having your personal space to put info about nights u are involved with - such as Punksi having cube info etc..

I WANT MORE ICONS!!!!

Also, please don't be afraid to think outside the box.  It doesn't just have to involve music. In fact, please include other stuff that you're into - this site has become more than just Bristol music culture; it tends to cover a lot Bristol culture in general, although this does tend to be the overlap of the parts of Bristol that music enthusiasts are interested in.

e.g. do we need a food/restaurant guide or is it enough to just have threads in the forum on the subject? or would you like cinema listings from places such as the cube and watershed?

i def think other events listed on here would be a good idea, there's so much more than just the music scene in Bristol, but i always find out too late or probably don't even find out about them at all!!

the event calender sounds bo, maybe also a music page and a random page like some other forums? i don't really know what's better, all the threads together or split up - i've seen it done on forums both ways. just something to think about and might please the ppl who moan about pointless threads!

the event pics thing sounds v good too, it is more & more popular now and is good for promotion in terms of future events - gives ppl a good idea what it's like in certain venues/what sort of ppl go to nights, how busy etc etc (and lots of good gurning/pissed up photos too for me to laugh at!)

I'd like to be able to use Hijack to look at a calendar and check what is happening on a particular date, much like SmokeRing. The event threads are still essential, but it's not as easy as heading onto SmokeRing or Ents24 etc to look for something happening on a specific day.

 Script   Script   Script   Script

the restaurant / food guide is a good idea too.....

i was thinking maybe having something on the start page which gives you a rouhg guide to bristol... ie. restaurants, pubs, clubs, cinemas, galleries, theatre, etc. it doesn't need to be all the ones within bristol, more a page which has been recommended by hijackers. i think it should be a thread locked to the normal peeps, but they pm ideas thru to a single account, which then update it solely. info could also be available in a seperate pop-up box which gives directions, info and comments

Cool idea, nice one Rit.

I also agree on the events calendar, ticket shop and info on BRISTOL culture, not just bristol music culture (restaurants/food mmm).

My 2 cents:

PROPER WORK SAFE OPTION- My no1 suggestion for making Hijack explode in popularity is a good work safe option. Sorry but the grey just doesn't cut it. In many workplaces you just can't use it. There's another forum I use which has a 'cloak' function which literally uses white and grey and lays the format out as close to a Word Doc as poss and is sized to fit in a Windows 'window'. It rocks. In my current job I can't really post  Cry (leading to accusations I am not a 'true' hijacker!!)  Eek Cry Cry  Bad Teeth

OPTION TO TURN OF SIGS/BANNERS/SMILEYS etc (basically all images). In the absence of a cloaked function, this would be a massive help to the work crew.

SEARCH- its shit. Sorry but it is. One that works would be lovely.  Cheesy

Finally, how about a limited amount of UPLOAD SPACE for those 'jackers who have trouble with it. Appreciate it may not be poss +/pr be expensive but it's be novel and I think very highly appreciated. Could even become a revenue generator..

Cheesy

Sigs can be turned off already - I actually want to turn mine back on for work, but there's nowhere near enought moderation on them to do so. Sad

I love the cloak idea tho - I use the WTN theme as it's less obvious than the worksafe grey, but still lots of room for improvement Two Thumbs

Aside from the calender and events photos (which would be a great subforum), I'd quite like to see better moderation too.
Good threads can be swamped with total bullshit very quickly, it gets a bit tedious. It would be good to introduce some kind of guidline of attempting to stay on topic.

A :belm: smiley. Why the fuck is this not done yet?
:belm:

A worksafe template with images/sigs off and the background plain white or something.

Local Artist/DJ profiles or at least something like that for the various nights. Hosting for mixes.

A front page focusing on whats coming up during the week, well written articles about anything relevant.

I don't want to harp on about the calender but it needs to be more that just a list of events. Genre grouping and alerts would be wicked as quite a few of us tend to forget things for one reason or another. The amount of quality nights I've missed due to sievehead syndrome is just stupid.
If the calender automaticly archived instead of deleting past events that would be cool too. It could be paired up with the photo gallery ,database stylee.`

I'm sure there's more but I'm too hangin to think straight   Smashed

Local Artist/DJ profiles or at least something like that for the various nights. Hosting for mixes.
Hosting (popular) mixes is expensive. Storing them is fine (well, to a point) but the bandwidth to dowload them is expensive, esp. if the mix is popular. There's also legal issues...

Also, while I've got you here:

If both hijackbristol.co.uk and hijackbristol.com worked, what should be the main url of the site?  .com or .co.uk?

it may be a bit of a gay idea, but what about a Hijack loyalty card that entitles you to money off at participating events?

Lots of nights have a hijack offer, it could work like a student card, but special rates for being part of the Bristol massive. To stop people regestering just to get into nights cheap, it could be arranged so you're only entitled to the cards after your post count reaches a certain amount

Like I said, it might be a bit of a gay idea, mainly because of the cost to produce and distribute the cards in the first place, but worth bearing in mind.

on another note.... if you're looking into selling tickets rit, is there going to be a hijack shop? I know we have the Exchange Forum, but theres plenty of people on this forum that produces something worthwhile.... or maybe even a directory (dunno if thats been suggested) Be it clothes stores, electricians, designers, computer bods.... just somewhere to share what we do and maybe create a bit of business for everyone

i could see a lot of post-padders joining just to get the discount, perhaps a limit on the time you've been a registered member or something instead of a post-count, something that people can't alter (or longevity AND a post count or some other combination so it wasn't just people padding posts?)

I would like a thing that presents a palette of non-english-keyboard characters when posting or replying. like these types of characters:

 é ü ë ä ö ç

-the icon could go up by the bold underline etc icons. and have a drop-down list. then it would by easier than having to use character map or whatever.

hijack is really  Two Thumbs

when you make changes i just reckon as long as you hold onto the ethos that it's really easy to use, big font, not too busy (visually) etc, but bringing too much that strays off the point of it being a really nice, funny and gossipy board and making it into a clean cut music/event info site..i for one wouldn't bother so much..

an events thread would be alright, but it's the whole having central forum with events and the general threads means people get exposed to loads more, and it's not like both things get seen for long  enough on the front page...

It's not gonna be an events thread. It's gonna be an events calendar that also posts details of the events directly into the main forum so they're linked and all the discussion stays in the same place.  Trust me, I know what I'm doing Wink

Back on topic, I'd like an ultimate work-safe theme - black on white, text only, no pics. Something that looks like a spreadsheet or Word document. Also an online ticket shop. And a live-chat forum would be ideal for banter and help reduce spam too.

im not going to get into an argument with you dualist, but its terminology that I use in every day language, I'm in no way homophobic (i have many very close homosexualist friends... and even they use the word gay as a term for describing something that may seem a little odd to other people)

I'm not going to stop using it just because you say so.... I get offended with your sexual references every 2 seconds, but never pull you up on it

no one cares if you're gay dualist, I'm not saying it to be offensive so please get over your sexuality, (unless you're not comefortable with it of course Bad Teeth) and you're perfectly entitled to take the piss out of my sexuality... but then we both like cock so there'd be no point Wink

back on point... maybe we need a little rainbow smiley

I don't think you're homophobic Carly, and I don't want an argument. Nor do I expect you to stop saying it just because I say so. But I do think that you don't care enough about whether you're upsetting me to actually ask why. Telling me to get over my sexuality is ridiculous when you're the one using language couched in prejudice. And if I say something that offends you, please do let me know so I can stop - I for one would like to improve myself.

/EDIT: Sorry Rit - won't continue this debate here.

I dont think 'ooo, what would dualist think' when posting.

I think you're over sensitive to terminology, its your issue, not mine. I apologise if I offend you, and I appologise for future offenses, It's not that I dont care or I want to be contriversial... I really dont think about what I say before I say it, and I'm not going to butter my opinions

If you wish to continue this convo on msn, by all means, add me in. Hijack has heard this rant from you before, and I'm sure she doesn't need to hear it again.

How about highlighting people's birthdays on the front page - DOB is in our profiles already, I'm sure it wouldn't take much to implement.

A better FAQ section would be aces. The current incarnation with "what is a FAQ" is less than useful & it would need to be updated.

A local information board/section possibly? Recommending/highlighting bars/clubs, record shops, restaurants, theatres etc, with a description and map. A sort of database for those new to bristol to scan over. The topics would need to be locked tho to stop them becoming filled with useless posts - maybe just updated by mods or any other nominated administrators whom members could then pm (via a button at the bottom of each topic possibly?) for updating.

A proper "work safe" mode that looks as much like a word document as possible would be great. With options to turn off all pictures smillies & hotlinked images too

also, at the bottom of the page where it has links for pages 1,2,3.....465 , can we have a 'goto page...' search thingie please (does that make any sense?)

so when we're floating here late at night, we can roam through the pages in the middle of the fourm that we otherwise wouldn't be bothered scrolling through to get to.

thank you Mr Rit  Kiss

But yes, Evz needs a cold shower - is there any way we can put a 'perve ban' on his IP address?  Bad Teeth

Don't get me wrong, I'm not singling him out at all. I just think that it'd put me right off posting my pic if I thought I was going to get hit on/rated: that's what www.hotornot.com is for  Wink

My god! I didn't know sites like that even existed! Can I borrow your login please Ed?  Cheesy

To be fair to Evz though, he doesn't perv random women, he just cyber flirts with ladies he has already met, and there's nothing wrong with that  Two Thumbs

Massive apologies if I haven't read the whole thread and some of this duplicates what others have said already... but....

I used to be fairly involved with audaciously.com which became the bristolscene.com forum. Some of you on here may well have been members previously I have met one or two... It was in some sense the forerunner to hijack though they aren't actually linked in any way. These previous forums served pretty much the purpose that hijack now seems to serve i.e. a music/events/contact and general chat forum.

A couple of lessons we learned on bristolscene.com an events calender possibly with database linking the events from forum posts is very successful but... and this is the big but.... it has to be comprehensive and very accurate, which means the admins/mods have to check that the events are correctly listed, prices are correct, dress codes all that stuff. This seems obvious but our events calender didn't work as we didn't have the time to make sure each and every event was listed properly, which meant people didn't use it much and it spiralled into disuse.

As for splitting up the forum into several smaller forums this is a double edged sword, it would make hijack more useable, but it would coalesce hijack members into smaller groups which tend to stick to their favourite area. Having everything on more or less one forum is both hijack's strength and weakness all rolled into one. The only possible split I could think of would be into serious discussion forum and a general stuff forum.

It definitely seems that you want to take it forward and are concerned that it might stagnate if you don't but it is very very successful and any major changes risk rocking the boat and potentially spoiling the winning formula (I'm all cliche'd out now).

One little thing I think that limiting the size of posted graphical content such as sigs and photos though it seems a little harsh would actually improve readability and useability a hell of a lot, since it sometimes looks very scrappy and hard to read. This has another benefit the graphics that do get posted are a lot more clever and fit a lot of impact into a small package. It should be possible to have the server which runs this automatically downsize and format posted images into a set of predetermined criteria. This might remove the need to have filtering or separate forums as each thread would be easy to scan read and move on to the next if it wasn't something you were interested in.

Oh well just my two-pounds worth.... bottom line keep up the good work it is a remarkably popular forum and it retains that "by the people for the people" feel to it which is part of what keeps people on here (I had one more cliche in me).

Agreed. Perving is ok, but you mustn't let them know about it. Wink

There's a difference between perving and flattery. I think the balance just tips now and again, I think the tip is if you make a comment about a 'jack chick' just think, if you heard a bloke say that to your sister/girlfriend/mother would you be offended or not - just a matter of respect innit. Bit of demure flattery is fine though, Wink .

This would be lame. Each time the page refreshes, it is logged as another "hit" on work servers. My company have words with anyone who has what is considered too many hits per day and people who spend all day on websites with streamed or automatic updates (like the cricket updates or spread-betting) have been told to stop. Hitting F5 is hardly difficult, is it?

Local Artist/DJ profiles or at least something like that for the various nights. Hosting for mixes.
Hosting (popular) mixes is expensive. Storing them is fine (well, to a point) but the bandwidth to dowload them is expensive, esp. if the mix is popular. There's also legal issues...
Yeah, copyright is the major down fall really.
Hosting isn't a huge problem these days as much as it used to be, but again, yeah, valid points.

it may be a bit of a gay idea...

Like I said, it might be a bit of a gay idea

Please stop doing this. PLEASE. Would it kill you just to say "crap"? A "gay idea" would be if you decided you fancied a bit of muff tonight.

Thanks for the suggestions... I'm after more suggestions based on "lifestyle" (crap term, but I can't think of anything else) rather than actual technical usage of the site itself, though these are also welcome.

We want to know what would help improve your lives when you're not at your computer i.e. the events calendar is going to help you to decide on where to go out, restaurant recommendations will help you to choose where to eat, cinema listings will help you to decide on what to see.

By all means, suggest other information you want the site to cover too (for example, the production forum generally requires you to be at a computer Wink) Kiss

I don't know why people were slagging off cinema listings for Vue, Odeon and Showcase. As much as I appreciate the virtues of slightly arthouse centres such as Cube, Watershed etc, I'd like to see a big film in a big cinema as well.

As said earlier, some sort of artists/skills directory would be pretty cool with people saying whether they'd be open to collaboration/remix/design for other people.  For example, I'd love to try and do some remix work for some of the bigger names around here but don't want to just pm someone out of the blue if they don't want it (though if anyone wants a remix done, pm me  Bad Teeth).

The Tunes and Mixes forum is good, but I find that with tunes, unless it is by one of the established names, they tend to get ignored and drop off the bottom rather quickly.  I think the suggestion I'm trying to make is already covered by Where's That Noise but frankly I'm a bit confused as to whether that is actually still being produced or not, but some sort of podcast/stream of stuff by producers on here could be interesting as a way for them to get people listening to their music without having to actually make the choice to go and download a track by a producer they've never heard of before.  I don't think this is a problem with mixes because people tend to look at the tracklist first so they can decide beforehand whether it is worth downloading.

How about a cinema listings page, with an area next to each film where Hijackers can submit their film reviews?

What a lot of people are suggesting regarding events/cinema listings is great , but also a HUGE job. Realisticly it would be a bit tedious for people do do on a voluntary basis. A part-time paid role for this would probably be required.

If you look at the Choke calender they have a seperate login for it with the password being available to anyone. A great and very trusting idea. It would be nice to say this was feasable for Hijack but, well, w've all made munted 3am posts, haven't we?

What would be easier would be to tell the cinemas they're basically getting free advertising on a very popular website and to send their artwork in on a regular basis. Simple.  Two Thumbs

While we're at it, why not redo the whole site in Flash and have the threads slide smoothly up and down the page in real time! Grin
Yes - if in doubt, make the site inaccessible by those using obscure, textbased or old browsers... oh, and search engines! Roll Eyes

This is why I was only suggesting Watershed/Cube/Arnolfini, cos it's relatively easy to set up ways to get their info into the database.   Two Thumbs

I don't know why people were slagging off cinema listings for Vue, Odeon and Showcase. As much as I appreciate the virtues of slightly arthouse centres such as Cube, Watershed etc, I'd like to see a big film in a big cinema as well.

then go to their internet listings. There is (almost) nothing relevant to Bristol's culture at Showcase/Odeon/Vue. I could be wrong but isn't it supposed to be representing BRISTOL CULTURE?

oh shush you peasant! ALL events that happen in Bristol (well at least the ones that are posted/plugged on here) have some relevance to community. IMHO the large scale cinemas DETRACT from community rather than adding anything beneficial. You can see most of the good populist films at places like the Cube or Watershed and those that you can't you KNOW when they're released because of all the bloody billboard advertising.

I love winding you up Ed. I know it doesn't exactly represent Bristol culture ie. films being shown that reflect life around Bristol etc, but many people I know go to large cinemas and therefore it is part of the culture of Bristol in that respect. I don't live anywhere near billboards (Part of the more rural massive), tend not to pay attention to them anyway, and they do not display what days and times they are shown at specific cinemas. I could visit their website but then I could do the same if I wished to view the listings for The Cube etc. There is room for every aspect of Bristol lifestyle on this site IMO. But it's all open to interpretation - you don't want it; I do. Horses, courses etc.

OK, just a few things, nowt heavy (man):

1) I'd like Hijack to actively promote itself to non D&B/dubstep/breaks/usual suspects type clubbers. Basically, I'd like to see Hijack develop into a colossal resource for clubbing and dance music type stuff in Bristol - which means more peeps who are into house (of various sorts), broken beats, hip hop, funk, bongo acid, twatcore etc etc.

2)I'd like to see some kind of proper Hijack dating service. I'm convinced there's a lovely laydeee out there in Hijack-land for me, but I don't know that many of them. A semi-serious Hijack dating thing (perhaps a singles night or something) would be good.

3) I'd like Obscene to let me DJ at a Hijack event at prime time so I can play "Word Up' to loads of D&B heads and get stoned to death.

4) I'd like more Hijackers to pay attention to my posts and not ignore me. Just because I can't discuss obscure D&B and don't live in Clifton, it doesn't mean that I'm not an ace person with interesting things to say. Or an annoying wind-up merchant. Either way, I can occasionally come out with interesting stuff.

5) I'd like to find happiness. If Hijack could help with this, that'd be good.

6) I want it all. I want it now.

Think that's enough for starters  Bad Teeth

yeah, but where does the money come from to produce the promotional items?

We put hijack advertising through the dont panic packs for free, but rit pays for the flyers to be printed in the 1st place. He already does enough for this website, you cant expect him to dig into his pockets any more

with 2500 members and more joining every day, Hijack is already growing at an alarming rate, its almost self advertised through word of mouth, plus most flyers in bristol have the hijack logo on them, its not like advertising doesnt happen already.

Good idea tho... Rit know's this, but Dont Panic are always willing to distribute free for Hijack... we love you guys  LIGHTAH!

not to compare hijackbristol to ncdnb.com any more.... but ncdnb.com is putting together a limited-edition CD to raise funds for the site/server

also a photo DVD (but that is of NC Strength, 6 years strong!  Slayer)

as hijack has loads of producers and such that are gaining in popularity, i could see something similar taking off here.  multi-genre double-CD pack in quantities of about 100-200, done once a year or something should help defray SOME of the operating costs.

This is a very good idea. It's pretty much a sure bet that a run of say a thousand would sell pretty quickly, even non-heads like myself would buy it as I'd be certain the quality would be very high musicly and in presentation.  As long as everything was original and Bristol area created it shouldn't have any problems.

I was chatting to Rit today about the general improvement of Hijack and he has thought about things in great detail. I have every confidence in the chirpy little fucker. Two Thumbs

Ah, but that's the joy of the internet, isn't it? You canb promote to people without having to do flyers etc. Just find out where said types of people hang out online, and then mention how great Hijack is to them etc. There's also student media - I'm sure peeps who do student radio shows/uni mags etc could be persuaded to mention Hijack on air/in print. I've already written a piece in iDJ (a year or two back) about the Hijack NYE party and the great community spirit.

Ways and means, ways and means. If that makes sense.

Why does being single equate to being desperate? I have the same reservations about internet dating type stuff, but I kn ow loads of normal, sane and undesperate types who've met like-minded peeps/future partners through the medium of t'internet. These days so many people do it - and meeiting good, like-minded single people of the opposite sex more difficult than it once was (or so the media would have us believe) - that it's more acceptable.

I reckon a Hijack singles night of speed dating thing would be good. We could do it at Timbuk2 instead of one of the normal parties. Or we could do it somewhere else at some other time. I'm easy. We should all wear massive name badges though. That'd be cool.

I had an idea to promote peoples tunes. You could harvest the url's of the mp3's and do some kind of podcast type of thing. Then people don't have to go through threads to find the tunes, they just open up some feed in their player and away they go. Harder to comment, but I guess you could add a url to the podcast or something.....
Could also get WTN to plug/play more? Dunno.

That'svery similar to what I suggested a few pages back and I think it is an excellent idea  Two Thumbs.

The other thing I was thinking, but I don't have any solution to really is that for a relative outsider like myself who knows a few people in the fringes of the community in real life it feels quite hard to get involved in the community beyond sometimes posting in the forums.  I've got plenty of pub mates, but nobody who'll go with me to things like the Hijack nights and now I have split up with my girlfriend (yes ladies, I'm single  Wink) I can't even drag her along reluctantly.  There's no way I'm turning up to a night on my own without knowing anyone ("Hello.  My name on the internet is gregmantis.  What's yours?  NERD ALERT!").

I guess things like the Alton Towers trip and Paintballing are a very good idea for stuff like this (though I don't know if I can afford either right now) so I guess what I'm saying is that although the community is very friendly it also feels quite closed.  Feck knows what my point really is though.

I think the difference would be that Hijack wouldn't be hosting them, just kind of summarising hem, but yeah, its similar (though I can't 100% remember....)

thats crap... I go out on my own all the time, i find it liberating... your not tied to somebody for the night... you can arrive whatever time you like, get home whenever you like, and its easier to break out of your little buddy bubble and speak to people you dont know

hijack nights are a law onto themselves anyway... I end up speaking to people for about 1/2 hour before I realise I've had loads of conversations with them online

try going out on your lonesome... it can be fun  Two Thumbs

This is true. I know it seems weird, but really, it's not. Start with something where you know it's going to be mainly hijackers, for example - Kraymon's inviting people to St Andrews Park tonight - why not go along there and introduce yourself? How do you think we all got to know each other?

Where's that Noise never really quite came off - don't know whether that was the separate forum, or the DJs or whatever, but as far as I could tell it didn't (doesn't?) get a lot of listeners.

Check out the radio setup at http://www.nuskoolbreaks.co.uk/portal.php - nicely implemented at the top of the page, doesn't get in the way too much and (perhaps most importantly), quite a lot of the shows are pretty good.

Even I, who is naturally on the shy side of people, can mange that! Just pick a night when you know there's gunna be lots of hijackers and start recognising faces. once you've made the leap to chat to a couple of 'em you'll find you keep on meeting more Two Thumbs

i usually go out to nights with a group of my friends (you'll notice us, we have a nasty habit of swarming) but Hijack is really lovely cos even if you end up separated from your mates or are sick of them there's a friendly face who'll stop for a quick chat, or have a bit of a dance. i really like that, especially with noir i find, just wondering round the blue mountain running into people you sort of know and just smiling. hijack is the don  Two Thumbs

I think the events calender is a great thing, like smokering it works really well, easy to find gigs, so nice one on getting that sorted hijack crew.... I'll have a think about it and try and suggest more, but more live dates need to be on here, its just from speaking to a few friends that are in bands, there appears to be a misconception that this is just a DNB forum, that needs to be ebolished as we all know its much more than that. Not sure if much promotion in done at live gigs, anyone know?

We are looking into setting this up - WTN? has been offline for a while and the rebuild is taking far too long - I was thinking a stream with mixes by Hijackers, so people can listen while they post. It much simpler and probably more effective too.

Would it not be possible to set up a live streaming radio, using Shoutcast? Or is that quite expensive?

yeah, but the only problem with this is that you could get peeps to all vote for summat then change it so they looked like they were voting for something completely different!   Evil
