If the bristolscene.com domain now points to hijack all the better....

Well, not yet, although it may do after the summer when I've finished using it for its current purpose. Smiley

A timed IP lockout page.  You enter in the number of hours that you don't want to be able to access Hijack for, from your current IP address.

I NEED THIS, OR I'LL NEVER FINISH THIS GODDAMN PHD.  I'M SO ANGRY!

 Script Script Script

obsy had to ban me the other day... hijack is so much more fun then uni work, and self-discpline is not terminology i comprehend (i could probably do with being banned all week really ,but then I go nutty at 3am coz im bored and wanna see what bristol's doing)

 Script

YES! hijack made me fail my coursework I'M SO ANGRY! goddamnit it is far too addictive!!!

This would be lame. Each time the page refreshes, it is logged as another "hit" on work servers. My company have words with anyone who has what is considered too many hits per day and people who spend all day on websites with streamed or automatic updates (like the cricket updates or spread-betting) have been told to stop. Hitting F5 is hardly difficult, is it?

Local Artist/DJ profiles or at least something like that for the various nights. Hosting for mixes.
Hosting (popular) mixes is expensive. Storing them is fine (well, to a point) but the bandwidth to dowload them is expensive, esp. if the mix is popular. There's also legal issues...
Yeah, copyright is the major down fall really.
Hosting isn't a huge problem these days as much as it used to be, but again, yeah, valid points.

it may be a bit of a gay idea...

...

Like I said, it might be a bit of a gay idea

Please stop doing this. PLEASE. Would it kill you just to say "crap"? A "gay idea" would be if you decided you fancied a bit of muff tonight.
I fucking knew you would jump on this.

Chuck a pretentious animated splash screen, badly looped non-optional music, bad navigation and I think that's all the boxes ticked.

Thanks for the suggestions... I'm after more suggestions based on "lifestyle" (crap term, but I can't think of anything else) rather than actual technical usage of the site itself, though these are also welcome.

We want to know what would help improve your lives when you're not at your computer i.e. the events calendar is going to help you to decide on where to go out, restaurant recommendations will help you to choose where to eat, cinema listings will help you to decide on what to see.

By all means, suggest other information you want the site to cover too (for example, the production forum generally requires you to be at a computer Wink) Kiss

I don't know why people were slagging off cinema listings for Vue, Odeon and Showcase. As much as I appreciate the virtues of slightly arthouse centres such as Cube, Watershed etc, I'd like to see a big film in a big cinema as well.

As said earlier, some sort of artists/skills directory would be pretty cool with people saying whether they'd be open to collaboration/remix/design for other people.  For example, I'd love to try and do some remix work for some of the bigger names around here but don't want to just pm someone out of the blue if they don't want it (though if anyone wants a remix done, pm me  Bad Teeth).

The Tunes and Mixes forum is good, but I find that with tunes, unless it is by one of the established names, they tend to get ignored and drop off the bottom rather quickly.  I think the suggestion I'm trying to make is already covered by Where's That Noise but frankly I'm a bit confused as to whether that is actually still being produced or not, but some sort of podcast/stream of stuff by producers on here could be interesting as a way for them to get people listening to their music without having to actually make the choice to go and download a track by a producer they've never heard of before.  I don't think this is a problem with mixes because people tend to look at the tracklist first so they can decide beforehand whether it is worth downloading.

What a lot of people are suggesting regarding events/cinema listings is great , but also a HUGE job. Realisticly it would be a bit tedious for people do do on a voluntary basis. A part-time paid role for this would probably be required.

If you look at the Choke calender they have a seperate login for it with the password being available to anyone. A great and very trusting idea. It would be nice to say this was feasable for Hijack but, well, w've all made munted 3am posts, haven't we?

What would be easier would be to tell the cinemas they're basically getting free advertising on a very popular website and to send their artwork in on a regular basis. Simple.  Two Thumbs

This is why I was only suggesting Watershed/Cube/Arnolfini, cos it's relatively easy to set up ways to get their info into the database.   Two Thumbs

then go to their internet listings. There is (almost) nothing relevant to Bristol's culture at Showcase/Odeon/Vue. I could be wrong but isn't it supposed to be representing BRISTOL CULTURE?

oh shush you peasant! ALL events that happen in Bristol (well at least the ones that are posted/plugged on here) have some relevance to community. IMHO the large scale cinemas DETRACT from community rather than adding anything beneficial. You can see most of the good populist films at places like the Cube or Watershed and those that you can't you KNOW when they're released because of all the bloody billboard advertising.

I love winding you up Ed. I know it doesn't exactly represent Bristol culture ie. films being shown that reflect life around Bristol etc, but many people I know go to large cinemas and therefore it is part of the culture of Bristol in that respect. I don't live anywhere near billboards (Part of the more rural massive), tend not to pay attention to them anyway, and they do not display what days and times they are shown at specific cinemas. I could visit their website but then I could do the same if I wished to view the listings for The Cube etc. There is room for every aspect of Bristol lifestyle on this site IMO. But it's all open to interpretation - you don't want it; I do. Horses, courses etc.

OK, just a few things, nowt heavy (man):

1) I'd like Hijack to actively promote itself to non D&B/dubstep/breaks/usual suspects type clubbers. Basically, I'd like to see Hijack develop into a colossal resource for clubbing and dance music type stuff in Bristol - which means more peeps who are into house (of various sorts), broken beats, hip hop, funk, bongo acid, twatcore etc etc.

2)I'd like to see some kind of proper Hijack dating service. I'm convinced there's a lovely laydeee out there in Hijack-land for me, but I don't know that many of them. A semi-serious Hijack dating thing (perhaps a singles night or something) would be good.

3) I'd like Obscene to let me DJ at a Hijack event at prime time so I can play "Word Up' to loads of D&B heads and get stoned to death.

4) I'd like more Hijackers to pay attention to my posts and not ignore me. Just because I can't discuss obscure D&B and don't live in Clifton, it doesn't mean that I'm not an ace person with interesting things to say. Or an annoying wind-up merchant. Either way, I can occasionally come out with interesting stuff.

5) I'd like to find happiness. If Hijack could help with this, that'd be good.

6) I want it all. I want it now.

Think that's enough for starters  Bad Teeth

yeah, but where does the money come from to produce the promotional items?

We put hijack advertising through the dont panic packs for free, but rit pays for the flyers to be printed in the 1st place. He already does enough for this website, you cant expect him to dig into his pockets any more

with 2500 members and more joining every day, Hijack is already growing at an alarming rate, its almost self advertised through word of mouth, plus most flyers in bristol have the hijack logo on them, its not like advertising doesnt happen already.

Good idea tho... Rit know's this, but Dont Panic are always willing to distribute free for Hijack... we love you guys  LIGHTAH!

not to compare hijackbristol to ncdnb.com any more.... but ncdnb.com is putting together a limited-edition CD to raise funds for the site/server

also a photo DVD (but that is of NC Strength, 6 years strong!  Slayer)

as hijack has loads of producers and such that are gaining in popularity, i could see something similar taking off here.  multi-genre double-CD pack in quantities of about 100-200, done once a year or something should help defray SOME of the operating costs.

not to compare hijackbristol to ncdnb.com any more.... but ncdnb.com is putting together a limited-edition CD to raise funds for the site/server.........

.....as hijack has loads of producers and such that are gaining in popularity, i could see something similar taking off here.  multi-genre double-CD pack in quantities of about 100-200, done once a year or something should help defray SOME of the operating costs.
This is a very good idea. It's pretty much a sure bet that a run of say a thousand would sell pretty quickly, even non-heads like myself would buy it as I'd be certain the quality would be very high musicly and in presentation.  As long as everything was original and Bristol area created it shouldn't have any problems.

I was chatting to Rit today about the general improvement of Hijack and he has thought about things in great detail. I have every confidence in the chirpy little fucker. Two Thumbs

2)I'd like to see some kind of proper Hijack dating service. I'm convinced there's a lovely laydeee out there in Hijack-land for me, but I don't know that many of them. A semi-serious Hijack dating thing (perhaps a singles night or something) would be good.

This is what I had in mind when I started the 'Hijack Personal Ads' thread, but nobody took it seriously.

Then, what did I expect?  Undecided  I am laughing, but I am also sad

no body really wants to admit they're sad enough to advertise their lonelyness on a local internet forum... desparation is not an attractive quality Bad Teeth

but we have a fair few couples on here now... I wonder how many people have actually hooked up through the wonderful world of hijack?

yeah, but where does the money come from to produce the promotional items?

This is why Hijack needs a merchandise area. T-shirts, Katie's idea of CD's, sorta ting... (I'd buy a hijack mug if it was like £4!!)

OK, just a few things, nowt heavy (man):

1) I'd like Hijack to actively promote itself to non D&B/dubstep/breaks/usual suspects type clubbers. Basically, I'd like to see Hijack develop into a colossal resource for clubbing and dance music type stuff in Bristol - which means more peeps who are into house (of various sorts), broken beats, hip hop, funk, bongo acid, twatcore etc etc.

yeah, but where does the money come from to produce the promotional items?

We put hijack advertising through the dont panic packs for free, but rit pays for the flyers to be printed in the 1st place. He already does enough for this website, you cant expect him to dig into his pockets any more

with 2500 members and more joining every day, Hijack is already growing at an alarming rate, its almost self advertised through word of mouth, plus most flyers in bristol have the hijack logo on them, its not like advertising doesnt happen already.

Good idea tho... Rit know's this, but Dont Panic are always willing to distribute free for Hijack... we love you guys  LIGHTAH!

Ah, but that's the joy of the internet, isn't it? You canb promote to people without having to do flyers etc. Just find out where said types of people hang out online, and then mention how great Hijack is to them etc. There's also student media - I'm sure peeps who do student radio shows/uni mags etc could be persuaded to mention Hijack on air/in print. I've already written a piece in iDJ (a year or two back) about the Hijack NYE party and the great community spirit.

Ways and means, ways and means. If that makes sense.

Why does being single equate to being desperate? I have the same reservations about internet dating type stuff, but I kn ow loads of normal, sane and undesperate types who've met like-minded peeps/future partners through the medium of t'internet. These days so many people do it - and meeiting good, like-minded single people of the opposite sex more difficult than it once was (or so the media would have us believe) - that it's more acceptable.

I reckon a Hijack singles night of speed dating thing would be good. We could do it at Timbuk2 instead of one of the normal parties. Or we could do it somewhere else at some other time. I'm easy. We should all wear massive name badges though. That'd be cool.
