Hi everyone,

This is quite an open-ended question, but that's exactly what it's intended to be:

What do you want from Hijack?

The reasoning behind this thread is two-fold:

  1) We are looking at how to expand Hijack and its range of features.  Every so often, a new feature is introduced that we think will make the site better e.g. the Faces gallery, the production forum
  2) Hijack is nothing without its members, so we would like to know which features and services you would find useful that would contribute to our aim of making Hijack a leading central resource for the music and arts scene in Bristol

Possible responses could be:

I want to find out about music events going on in Bristol
I want be able to buy tickets to events through Hijack
I would like to hear about film/arts events as well as music
I would like to use Hijack to meet like-minded people

Please let us know about what is lacking and indeed, what you like about the site.

We look forward to your input.

Regards,
rit and the rest of the Hijack team

I'd like to be able to use Hijack to look at a calendar and check what is happening on a particular date, much like SmokeRing. The event threads are still essential, but it's not as easy as heading onto SmokeRing or Ents24 etc to look for something happening on a specific day.

ok so now a serious reply now that I got that out of my system  Bad Teeth

I think an event photo section (similar to faces, but for events!) would be great, so many users start "photos from xx night" threads (especially lately) that i think it'd really be a welcome and needed addition... i mean as much as i love haveing to scroll 50 different ways to see photos, i think the faces gallery is more organized.

could be accessible by all members, but for simplicities sake probably just the few that take and upload pictures?

good exposure for the nights too so the promoters and clubs usually love it  Two Thumbs

we already do this in nc and I  Heart it loads, i want something similar for Bristol darnit!

Seeing as the site is so closely tied in to the vast majority of Bristol's good nights, I think some kind of all-encompassing events listing calender would be great, along with the ability to purchase tickets for nights too. Give the Bristol Ticket shop a run for their money, I say! I think they need it...

To everyone requesting the events calendar: the work is already in progress and will be coming soon, firstly in a more basic format (including sending reminders about events that you've flagged, so you don't miss them), but then with loads of bells and whistles.

Also, ticket sales is something I've been wanting to add for a long time now, but need to sort out the logistics of online credit card payments at an affordable rate so that booking fees are no higher than in shops.

 Two Thumbs

Give us more suggestions, inspired by your "wouldn't it be handy if..." thoughts.

I'd like a decent event calendar Two Thumbs

I'd like to be able to turn on sigs at work Roll Eyes
That means no nudity, swearing, huge flyers or flash chatrooms!

I'd like to override forum settings according to IP / login pairs. NERD ALERT!
This means I could setup sigs & tomato red for home, and no-sigs & grey for work.

I'd like some way of filtering out the crud - a checkbox on each thread labeled "this will interest Shinny" would be perfect Bad Teeth
Actually - that's a serious suggestion. It moves too chuffing quick for an old-timer like me. Would a slashdot style rating system work?
Maybe allow a largish group of users (like lesser moderators) to assign a thread a category, or number there-of such as "important, serious, music, event, funny, inane, xxx, benj...". Then I could filter out (or at least reduce the priority of) threads I'm unlikely to be interested in.

They're my thoughts on the subject Grin

Also, please don't be afraid to think outside the box.  It doesn't just have to involve music. In fact, please include other stuff that you're into - this site has become more than just Bristol music culture; it tends to cover a lot Bristol culture in general, although this does tend to be the overlap of the parts of Bristol that music enthusiasts are interested in.

e.g. do we need a food/restaurant guide or is it enough to just have threads in the forum on the subject? or would you like cinema listings from places such as the cube and watershed?

I'd prefere it if the main forum was seperated from stuff that was directely music related to stuff thats general waffle, like 'whose the prettiest boy on TV', and 'how do I get those nasty cum stains out of my girlfriends school uniform'.

You know so you can log on either to have a chit-chat or search for some music news gossip - that probably wont be up on the BBC or NME web pages  Smashed

I think this is potentially a good idea, separating a 'general' board from a 'music' board. My only concern is that most people would frequent the general board, and miss a lot of the music info.

Yeah, this has already come up several times.  I believe that it's definitely not in the interests of the board to separate music from non-music threads.  If a filtering system becomes available, then fine, it should all stay in one place.

Thing is, threads are rarely clearly defined - they certainly don't stay on topic that much. Music threads meander into banter and drivel just as easily as stupid threads morph into discussions about who's playing at what night this weekend and whether you're going.

Exactly, and having observed forums that have everything in one place and forums that have things split up, the ones with many split sections are nowhere near as busy, and each section tends to develop its own small set of users rather than contributing to the site overall.

Obviously, I want suggestions on the usability of the forum, but this thread is also about how you'd like Hijack to make your life easier, organise your social life, etc - TELL ME WHAT'S MISSING Wink

The trouble is once a useful thread descends into banter, it becomes difficult to extract useful information posted later on. Much as I luvs banter as much as the next girl, I ain't reading through a few hundred posts of banter to spot a serious post I may be intersted in. Angry

ok so now a serious reply now that I got that out of my system  Bad Teeth

I think an event photo section (similar to faces, but for events!) would be great, so many users start "photos from xx night" threads (especially lately) that i think it'd really be a welcome and needed addition... i mean as much as i love haveing to scroll 50 different ways to see photos, i think the faces gallery is more organized.

could be accessible by all members, but for simplicities sake probably just the few that take and upload pictures?

good exposure for the nights too so the promoters and clubs usually love it  Two Thumbs

we already do this in nc and I  Heart it loads, i want something similar for Bristol darnit!

i repeat my original suggestion which seems to have been lost admist the calendar replies.

Cinema listings would be cool(cube and watershed, not odeon and veu) and art gallery exhibitions. Do it in the same calendar as the events. Make that calendar iCal compliant too Smiley

Some kind of karma thing? Though I'm not sure we need it...

Better search. It still does some weird things. Will have to think about that a bit.

A way to stop whale posting nonsense after he's just been to the pub  Bad Teeth

A way to stop me posting nonsense after I've been to the pub  Bad Teeth

Myspace link under avatar/in user profile as per web addres/MSN - seeing as so many people have it.

A proper FAQ that goes beyond the thread Jim started. Could link to relevant threads (Where can I get a job? -> Benj's rants about council work....). If the sites search was really clever this could sort of get built itself... like what google do Wink

Slightly stronger moderation. Not censorship but moving, say, picture threads from night X into the original advert thread for night X.

Ticket booking would be good, but dangerous!

more like rit's page but for events, like i said - like the faces gallery, but accessible by certain users (ie: those who took the pictures) and viewable by all.

hell yes, a place where people could leave recommendations on specific restaurants/reviews by category (indian, chinese etc.) would be great
cinema, art and live band sections eventually in the calendar would be awesome also
finally if the calendar was searchable by genre as well as date this would be nice too.
ooo and possibly a section for reviewing records and stuff

I like the live chat idea, this could just be a java powered IRC client for example.

yeah I definatly need a Hijack function that stops me posting after several litres of cider.

I think a handy function would be more profileness, I like to find out about people (cos I'm nosey) maybe combine with faces, something that says a bit about a person, plus any nights they're invloved and links and stuff to mixes, plus then people wouldn't have to have such big sigs as they could put flyers and stuff in their profile.

Also I want the option to be a techno specialist instead of a dub specialist  Grin

Seeing as the site is so closely tied in to the vast majority of Bristol's good nights, I think some kind of all-encompassing events listing calender would be great, along with the ability to purchase tickets for nights too. Give the Bristol Ticket shop a run for their money, I say! I think they need it...

Obviously we aready know this is in the making -but it is greatly needed, because I still find the search a really bad tool...I can never find what I am looking for  Undecided
I also like the idea of having your personal space to put info about nights u are involved with - such as Punksi having cube info etc..

I WANT MORE ICONS!!!!

Also, please don't be afraid to think outside the box.  It doesn't just have to involve music. In fact, please include other stuff that you're into - this site has become more than just Bristol music culture; it tends to cover a lot Bristol culture in general, although this does tend to be the overlap of the parts of Bristol that music enthusiasts are interested in.

e.g. do we need a food/restaurant guide or is it enough to just have threads in the forum on the subject? or would you like cinema listings from places such as the cube and watershed?

i def think other events listed on here would be a good idea, there's so much more than just the music scene in Bristol, but i always find out too late or probably don't even find out about them at all!!

the event calender sounds bo, maybe also a music page and a random page like some other forums? i don't really know what's better, all the threads together or split up - i've seen it done on forums both ways. just something to think about and might please the ppl who moan about pointless threads!

the event pics thing sounds v good too, it is more & more popular now and is good for promotion in terms of future events - gives ppl a good idea what it's like in certain venues/what sort of ppl go to nights, how busy etc etc (and lots of good gurning/pissed up photos too for me to laugh at!)

I'd like to be able to use Hijack to look at a calendar and check what is happening on a particular date, much like SmokeRing. The event threads are still essential, but it's not as easy as heading onto SmokeRing or Ents24 etc to look for something happening on a specific day.

the restaurant / food guide is a good idea too.....
