noodle is annoyed by the referendum on AV. AV is shite. Waste of time (unless the 10k income tax threshold gets done, that would sort me right out).

Yeah, AV does look shite.  But they are making noises about the 10k tax threshold, though maybe going up in steps.

It is the best result considering where we were - it's a full coalition, with Lib Dems in the cabinet.

The 10k tax looks good for the poors on the surface, but it will cost 17bn a year so where is that coming from? No doubt some other tax, doubt people will be any better off.

There will be no AV, PR, or anything imo - it is turkeys voting for Christmas, if you were elected as MP under the fptp system why would you vote against it?

Still don't think even AV will happen, let alone anything else - nearly all Tories are vehemently against any change in voting system, it was only agreed so they could Cameron into number 10.

Lib Dem voters (of which I was one) - would you have voted any different if you knew this was going to happen?

The shitness of the electoral reform agreement would've changed my vote to Labour, probably. Seeing as the only reason my entire family haven't been in poverty since 1989 is the Labour government of '97 I really don't mind Labour on the grand scale.

But if the electoral reform stuff had gone the liberal way, to the letter, I'd be able to stomach the Tory other bad shit (as well as the good shit like right of recall and constitutionally defined parliamentary terms of course).

If we're going to have a Tory government, which lets face it, was going to happen as they got the highest percentage of votes, then rather we have one tempered with LibDem ideologies. I am going to aim for optimism rather than pessimism, and what has happened is a coalition between the left and right, rather than a split between the two, which is how it's been for decades and not always successfully. The Tories want to sort out the economy, which does need to be sorted, and hopefully having Nick Clegg as second in command will help this be done with less damage to public services and people with a lower income. Also both the LibDems and the tories share policies on no ID cards and civil liberties, the role of the community and new businesses.

I'm a bit worried about foreign policy, as the parties are diametrically opposed and the Tory's will no doubt get their way on Europe, defense and immigration, but time will tell, I also don't reckon you fans of the waccy baccy will be celebrating anytime soon.

Yep, that's the same thinking that is seeing me through - the idea that the tories will spend the next few years being pestered by some good old lefty liberals whenever they try to do anything. It may not always end up having any effect, but at least it will wind them up. Cheesy

Given the deal I'd still have preferred a conservative minority, tempered on both sides by a free-voting Liberal and Labour opposition. But I guess we'll have to see how this goes.... The workings of government will, I reckon, be mostly Tory in economic policy. Be quite liberal in social policy. And be a slightly tempered Tory approach when it comes to the finances of welfare-related spending and front-line public services. Reform will be weak beyond belief, but at least a referendum will give a reason for a wider slice of the electorate to learn about the voting systems.

The main thing, that I honestly couldn't voice a prediction for currently, is how public opinion of either party as a single entity is shaped over the course of the term. I'm not sure what the media attitude will be, but presumably it'll be sweetness and light in the Tory press for a while, and quite wary and dejected in the liberal press. Then cracks will appear, the liberal press will downplay them and the Tory press will start ripping into the liberal side of the coalition in anticipation of replacing them with Tories at the next GE. The only way the libs could go up in estimation, and the Tories down, in this coalition is if the Tories actually make some high profile and very "serious" faux pas along the lines of the Andrew Sachs/Russell Brand thing. The sort of thing that'd completely put absolute morons off the Tories.

Script I can only hope we get the best bits of each party; the cynic inside me says we'll probably get the worst.

Increasing CGT - probably back to the old method of adding it to income tax & charging at what ever rate that is - and increasing the lower-level income tax rate. If income tax is hiked up to 25%, with the first £10k tax free, then it will benefit those earning under £24120. Anyone earning more than that will be paying more tax.

Interesting - I know the lib dems wanted to increase CGT, but surely the Tories aren't gonna want to do that.

Taxing the rich and giving to the poor? Doesn't sound like the Tories to me...

There's always going to be problems with a purely left or right wing government. If the right help the rich too much then they ultimately give away power and control to the highest bidders (ie Merdoch, big businesses etc) while the poorest, most vulnerable people suffer because they no longer become a priority of the state as they are not feeding it with their taxes. If the left tax the rich too much, then you get a brain drain, offshore accounts, homes in switzerland etc, where the people with the most money do everything in their power to keep it and our most skilled workers move away to other countries, the government then get in debt by helping the poor while loosing taxes from the rich. It's a fine balance.

Hopefully this coalition gives an opportunity for this balance, when Dave wants to give power to the likes of Merdoch or take money out of public spending, Nick can have a word, nudging him to target the bankers, the Lords and the aristocracy and keep some integrity; yet when Nick gets carried away with wanting overtaxing certain brackets, and being too free with tax breaks (mind you I like the 10k one), Cameron can show him the implications to the economy as a whole if people are over taxed. Again, I'm being optimistic.

in my expert opinion...

This can work  im sure, and for many reasons.

1- they are being watched like never before, the public did have a major roll in the making of this government. and they will kick off if they get robbed again imo

2- A liberal presence looking over the shoulder of the tories is great news for the poorest in society who often get hard balled by policies created in the 'good of the nation'.

3- we can look forward to the implementation of a robin hood/tobin style tax to fund the poorest, this is a win win because once brought in, the middle and upper class's can stop moaning so much about welfare and get one with their own lives once more.

4 - labour.... NU labour... tony.. gordon..balls... mandleson... corrupt, sneaky bastards... they had to go, and the manner in which they went was classic, nick made them think gord had a look in, and boom , he went for the left hook.

5- fresh start with a greener focus and hopefully less/slower economic growth.

and some real reasons about the global problems we face, but who gives a fuck about them.. 70% certainly dont, and ipad is out soon.

Lib Dem voters (of which I was one) - would you have voted any different if you knew this was going to happen?

Probably not, actually. I've always been a Lib Dem supporter but even through this election have remained fearful of them becoming Government - I just didn't think they could cope with it (incidentally I have changed my mind about this following their negotiations with the Conservative Party in recent days).

The most important thing for me at the moment is the economy. We are standing at the edge of an abyss and there is still every possibility we could become completely, royally Fucked. With a capital F. I really do not want that to happen, and I do have some faith in the Tories as a whole making some decent efforts to sort it out, especially with heavy input from Saint Vince. My big concern is George Osborne - I'd take Alistair Darling over him (he's been pretty good recently!).

But Theresa May as Home Secretary? Fuck off.

yeh, i was very close to voting labour. think i would have voted different knowing the outcome... but then there is no way you could know the result so not point pondering on it really is there.
