Facebook originated in 2004, but started to take off in 2005/6 which probably would explain why Hijack's stats have never been as good. Early 2009 seems to be when it started to tail off.

When I joined in 2008 the first page of the main forum would have posts from about the previous 4 hours at most. Now there are post from the last 4 days on there!
Facebook and (to a lesser extent IMO) Twitter are just vastly superior platforms for communication.
At what point does Hijack get shut down? Or will it linger on forever with just a few of us locked in a perpetual meme-filled purgatory?

We need 374 more posts this month and we might be able to turn the tide of doom. Well we will have the same amount of posts as last month at least.

April has been a banner month - a bump (by a Mod no less) on the indignant homosexuals thread started things ticking nicely, then Thatcher popped her clogs bringing out 3 pages of quasi-political drivel and some vintage Haydeez, and now Boston has conveniently blown up spawning a thread where Hijacks resident conspiracy theorists are currently flying the (false) flag for logical thought. This is the month we turned it around, its like 2009 all over again.

Banning Zammo was a bad move.
Also, looking at some old posts made by friends, there seemed to be a lot more threads on actual nights (there probably were more events then) but page 2 or 3 were reviews and evaluations of said nights with moody and artistic pictures where the photographer has left the exposure on for a million year and bounced the flash of a wall or something. Cunts seemed to lap that up.

Still maintain that some simple things like a calendar (integration with headfirst?) and a prominent music player (soundcloud?) would reinvent this site and give it more focus.
But I can't see it happening.

I remember when HJ was first launched and it was more of a 'magazine' style website with a front page full of news stories and audio, then links to the forum.
It's more worked, admittedly, but it would generate more traffic. A forum on its own isn't enough to entice people in anymore.

People post all their interesting links in other places now. I blame Facebook mainly, but it's a bigger phenomenon in that newer social networking platforms are killing non-specialised fora. Hijack used to be interesting because although it's always ostensibly been about music, you'd get a tonne of weird and wonderful links/topics/news stories on the main page which people now put on Twitter, Facebook, etc.
It also used to be a friendly place to hang out - part of what made it better than a lot of other internet fora was its good natured-ness. Banning Zammo wasn't a bad idea - it was his unclever brand of noxious bullshit that drove a lot of people away in the first place.

Hijack still gets almost 100,000 page views a month. The threads/content are very well-indexed and easily found when searching Google.
A drop in posts is a self-perpetuating problem, as fewer posts cause even fewer posts.
Over the last few weeks, there has been discussion of a magazine-style format returning, with a redesign, guest bloggers/writers, event ticket sales and *gasp* an integrated calendar. This is going to be a lot of work but is part of a bigger plan with the ticketing company I've launched recently and integration with Hijack is one of the avenues to its launch in the UK.
If anyone would like to contribute content and have it seen by many people (remember that there are still thousands of registered members, who will be emailed upon relaunch, as well as the high ranking of Hijack threads on search engines), please give me a shout via PM.
Cheers, Rit
