Beavis' dugout post made me think about all the record shops that have closed...

Breakbeat Culture, Replay in the centre near the dodgy wee-scented underpass, Giant (remember this? On Park Row) - they always looked at me with a mix of disdain and bewilderment because I was a girl and didn't go up to the counter like that bloke out of human traffic and say, "any jungle in guy?" in a rude gyal fronting way, that weird shop on Park St that sold loads of jazz stuff downstairs and reckoned it was reeeely cheap when it wasn't, and now... Imperial's going too Cry

Any more?

There used to be this place on the Triangle, near where the Balti Hut is now, that sold loads of wicked dub and shit. Can't remember what it was called....

yeah! it's been empty for ages now Sad

Imperial's going in September Cry

It's becoming a cafe instead Roll Eyes

It's been a record shop in one guise or another for about 35 years or something. What a bunch of arse. RLF is moving to London as a result (and because he can make it Big there and be Famous and find the Streets paved with Gold and I don't mean coating Mike Skinner in margarine) and feck knows what the other musicky people who work there will do...

10-15 Music Exchange, was in the centre then moved to Gloucester Road but the shop is now shut, I think its called something else now and is still on Gloucester Road but they had endless supplies of old records.

it's a real shame. Apparently the lease is up in September and the landlord is doubling the rent, no doubt fully aware interested parties'll be q'ing up.

Aah, Giant :misty-eyed: ...used to be my regular haunt... I (vaguely) remember staggering in there drunk on the last day and getting all philosophical/annoying, so much so I had to buy some Giant slipmats, which are still on my decks to this day 'cos they're perfect! Big up Duncan and his ever-changing hairstyles!  Tomato Bad Teeth

REPLAY HAYMARKET

they used to have four shops there - one for tickets/clothes, one for dance music, one for equipment, and the one that's still there. used to make Loadsa money outta those shops (buying from one, selling to another)... those were the days!

What about Purple Penguin?

It's a shame, we've all mentioned shops we miss, but have there been any new arrivals that are a good replacement/alternative? How do y'all feel about Chemical and Fopp opening? Were they responsible for these closures elsewhere?

Fopp and t'internet and all you skanking cloffers downloading and copying stuff illegally deifinitely affected Imperial's sales recently but see Steve outlaw's post re: rent doubling for the reason of closure...

I haven't been in Bristol long enough to know all these shops, but I don't like going into Fopp very much. I've only been there a few times, but it always makes me feel yuck in there. I think there should be a petition sent to that landlord so Imperial doesn't close. Not that it would do anything, but that shop is tits.

Big props to Rooted for continuing to struggle against the odds in the cyber age.

It's a shame when small independents get pushed out the picture.

I will miss Imperial tho - nice selection - nice people - reeeeespec'.

I'm not too bothered, to be honest. I just want the records I like at a sensible price. Lots of people talk about the usefulness of knowledgeable staff, but to be honest I've never actually experienced this. To be honest, when I started buying records almost all the record shop staff I encountered had really bad attitude - Replay Dance was particularly bad as I remember it.... So I wasn't sorry to see that place go.

they've never been rude to Me, but i see the way Most of them (especially the indie types) look down their noses at people in general...

there Are a couple of really helpful people in there, but there are also quite a few of them who look at you like you're foreign when you ask if they've got something...

bring back breakbeat culture - now They were helpful. and they never tried to sell you anything you wouldnt want (unlike most places that sell anything they can) - there were many times i went in there & they sold me a few records they knew i'd be after, and when i asked them 'anything else?' they said no - it's not like i was best mates with them, but they always sorted me out - what a shop!

Weird,  the few times I went to breakbeat culture they were total twats. I guess they didn't know me and so hid the good records. It must be my aftershave Sad

Have to stand up for the staff at Replay on Park St, they're generally pretty sound. I have been going in there since the dawn of time though, so maybe they've just given up on scaring me off.

ha ha, i remember breakbeat culture had about 5 records for sale,
Backyard records - Hip Hop store on st stephens st. Never bought anything there but it had a nice sofa.

Chemical - Best Selection and oh so cool way of buying vinyl.
Eat The Beat - Coolest staff.

I'd forgotten about Backyard! Wicked shop and funny as fuck people incl the Aspects, plus they used to do open mic comps now and then.

Eat the Beat is my fave for the staff, coffee, art and selection of broken, although the quality of the D'n'B and Breaks selection has dropped off in the last year or so (are you reading this James?).

Breakbeat Culture had little or no stock for quite a while before it finally shut because Darren and Markee didn't give Rapid & Decoy (who were running the day to day stuff) any money for buying cos they were too busy writing cod-breaks pop.

They are all safe in replay, ian (el eye) is a very safe and chatting guy but i would admit i didnt really talk to him at all until one day i asked about some old hiphop record and he then decided to talk to me more because of my superior knowledge :-P - but hes a very nice guy who knows his stuff

What about GOOD shops in bristol?

james et al@eat the beat are very nice lads, no complaints at all..
replay are goooood.. probably best hiphop selection ,
but rooted are also nice for hiphop, and  for dnb i've heard :-x

I like The Beat Goes On- not necessarily one for the average shopper, but I did buy a fair few good tunes there last time I went.

You won't get any new stuff obviously, but it's not a bad way of discovering random tracks from a few years back. Only one punter can listen to records at a time because they have to be played out on the shop's system, which also makes you uber-nervous of scrathing the needle about (well, it did me anyway).
