took this in the egyptian desert the other day, unsure whether to crop it (chop the bottom off)  Undecided

only just seen this post weez; a general (i stress general - its not always the case) rule for good composition in photography is the rule of thirds. A landscape with the horizon dead centre is often not as pleasing as one with the horizon on one of the thirds; either two thirds sky, one third land or two thirds land one third sky. If you wanted to apply that to this photo, then you could crop the bottom a little. I'd also recommend increasing the contrast to darken the shadows & boosting the colour a little.

maybe something like this (although could prob do with a bit more taking off the bottom).

As if to demonstrate the point, Sam's photo doesn't adhere to thirds, but is excellently composed. the contrast between the sky/stone/grass is great.

thanks ronnie, that's good advice.
when i posted that pic on here it was loads lighter than it appeared on the camera and iphoto library. obviously to do with it being enlarged. i don't like the fact you can see the 'legs' and agree that there's too much of both bottom and top.
as it happens, a week or so after posting that i applied it to my desktop, which automatically darkened and intensified the colours. it also chopped loads out and the image looked loads better.
i don't have photoshop or any photo tweaking programme since my computer had a near death experience a while back, so i couldn't change what i disliked about the pic once it was up on here

I was bored last night and messing with photoshop. This might be a little over processed but just in case you liked it I thought I'd post it up...

you using different exposures from one raw file, or shooting separate shots? I had a go using 3 files from 1 raw & CS2 and it looked shit.

Different exposures from 1 RAW. Those were -1, 0, & +1 I think. Photomatix does a load of the work and then you make little adjustments.

That sunset shot I did, I just blended three differently processed exposures myself, but these are more 'proper' HDR.

I think Joe's got a feature that pulls out a single colour on his camera.

I've done it on big blocks of colour in Photoshop using layers and painting sections out (below) but fiddly bits are trickier. Zaitoichi's the man to speak to I reckon.

I've got a lush setting called "colour accent."

pick out a colour using a target and it will isolate it along with very similar colours. It also has a sensitivity setting which is quite useful for picking out weaker colours.  Smiley

Shame you can't use it in conjunction with macro mode but it's still a brilliant setting.  Smiley

The D40 is a good camera, but it does have its limitations. 18 months after getting mine, I'm replacing it with a D300.

Hello. Are you selling your D40 then? Wink

nope. I'll keep it as a spare/give it to hooty when I eventually get round to replacing it. The adverse exchange rate has resulted in nikons going up in price by about 20% & I've not bought the D300 yet.

Have you looked at the D90? I've read a couple of reviews that have said that due to it being the newer camera it's preferable over the D300 and a lot cheaper too. Here's one of the reviews.

I plan on replacing my stolen D40 with one as soon as I've got the cash.

I'm not a great fan of ken rockwell's opinion, but I have been considering it as there's a £300 difference now.

The main differences are FPS (4.5 vs 6-8), focus points (11 vs 51) & weatherproofing/build quality as the sensors are pretty much identical (the D300 has slightly more pixels) . Obviously the D90 has video capabilities, but that's of no interest to me. The D300 will meter (after adding lens profiles to the camera) with my prime lenses, which would save me the £150 of buying a digital light meter and it has more single function buttons on the exterior (I am sick of navigating the D40's menu to change iso/shooting mode/metering mode!), but is that worth £300? I could get the D90 & the sigma 10-20 for the price of a D300.

What prices have you seen the D90 and D300 for? I guess £300 isn't too bad it if you can afford it, but for those main differences, for me it's a lot. I'm not going to use those extra frames per second with the types of shots I take; I've read a little about the focus points and as they're just mid points of the 11 anyway I think it's not too necessary; and most DSLRs are as weatherproof as you need them unless you plan on shooting in a storm. The build quality is a bonus but for the sake of £300 you can make sure you don't knock it about too much.

Are those specific lenses that the D300 will meter with and the D90 wouldn't? What's the score there?

Yea, it's a Canon EOS 300X... I've had it for about 3 1/2 years now... and I still barely know how to use it Doh! The second one is Weston Super Mare, it's colour as well, man it was bleak that day!
