arent dead prez shit now?

dunno, but......

Quote
Immediately following a dead prez performance at The Evergreen State College on Valentine's Day 2008, a fight broke out and a campus police officer arrested a suspect for a misdemeanor assault. When the suspect was taken into custody, audience members had warned the band of the arrest. Still on stage, they reportedly encouraged the audience to "find out the officers badge number and pursue the arrest and do something about it". A crowd of roughly 200 people then surrounded the officer's car, demanding the police to let the suspect go. Eye witnesses claim that a majority of the estimated 200 people were bystanders watching the riot. An hour prior to the actual riot starting the campus officer had attempted to leave the scene and was verbally harassed by various individuals that were standing outside the venue. The officer that made the arrest felt threatened by the small crowd of angry fans and then called for back up. The officers that responded to the scene attempted to disperse the crowd and used pepper spray. Several bystanders were caught in the dispersed pepper spray. The Olympia deputies responded and removed the campus officer and her car and released the suspect after taking down his information.

When a Thurston County deputy's car wouldn't start, the crowd overturned it, broke out the windows and sprayed graffiti on it. The deputy's laptop computer and a radar gun were stolen. No weapons were removed from the vehicle. Three other patrol cars had graffiti on them, and suffered minimal damage. The riot was estimated to have caused up to $50,000 worth of damage. Multiple officers were assaulted with rocks, glass bottles and trash cans in response to the attack on the crowd. There were no serious injuries reported.[2]

If you can get past their backward militant stance an frequent hypocrisy, they've made a dope tracks. "Hip-hop" is obviously a big tune and crowd favourite, but there a few tracks hidden away on their "Turn off the radio" mixtapes, that are heavy. "Get up" is one of those.

I've never been overly impressed myself....and I'm usually impressed by anything you can remotely pigeonhole in the Hip Hop bracket...

A lot of talking loud but not saying anything...and the beats were nothing special either IMO. There may be the odd good track, granted, but overall I was never a fan. I'll revisit what I have of theirs for another listen....obviously 'Hip Hop' was a massive tune...hmmm...maybe I'm coming round already... Bad Teeth

Not a lot of people know that

It would appear that Kanye produced a track called "It's bigger than hip-hop" which featured on a version of the UK single, rather than the the big tune known as "Hip hop".

I swear the chorus of the big tune we are all talking about goes "It's bigger than Hip Hop" though... indicating that the tune in question is called "It's bigger than Hip Hop"

Confusing if anything, can anyone clear it up? Huh

Yes the chorus on "Hip-Hop" does go like that, but check the links and you'll see that there are two tracks, one called "Hip-Hop", track 4 on the album and another called "It's bigger than Hip-Hop", track 16 on the album.

I did check the links but they didn't have audio.

So they are chanting the name of a different track to the one which they are chanting in? Huh

It would make sense for the title of the track to match the chorus, surely?

I've got the album at home, so I'll have a listen to see what difference there is.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=4jNyr6BJZuI is the "Hip-Hop" video (not that I can check it at work, but google says it is.) I think the "It's bigger than Hip-Hop" track is a remix of sorts, but I'll confirm that later/tomorrow.

http://www.stlyrics.com/songs/d/deadprez1074/itsbiggerthanhiphop847870.html This has the lyrics to The "bigger than" track and although they read in a similar fashion, they're different to "Hip Hop" http://www.lyricsfreak.com/d/dead+prez/hiphop_20038331.html

I love Kanye, I think he's done great things for the face of hip hop and taken away the emphasis on gangsta bollocks somewhat. His beats and lyrics are absolutely big, I thought for a while I shouldn't let on that I like him cos it aint cool but then I thought FUCK DAT

Kanye DID produce "hip hop", as well as the remix - it's his uber distinctive bass sound that he's used on much of his older productions... but if I remember correctly NoiD got the credit for it - Kanye was ghosting for him a LOT during that period...

And I really don't understand why people get at peoples hypocrisy in hip hop - people are allowed to change their opinions or revise their stance, who gives a fuck???

All of dead prez's songs weren't made in the same day, things change - lets not hang people by their words hey!!

Not according to the Discogs and Wiki link. He produced the "remix". The distinctive bass sound probably comes from a Trinity. NoID had nothing to do with Dead Prez.

Thing is, I'd rather have a hyped up Kanye, who has great cadence and soul in his delivery, over some of the other folks who're technically better, but just sound boring as shit.

Cadence, as in his expression when rhyming, is dope - his flow is alright...

And he's pretty much always hyped - if there's one thing you can say about Kanye, it's that his voice and tone are never boring.

if there's one thing you can say about Kanye, it's that his voice and tone are never boring.

Not to my ears, but then it's all personal taste. I think it's probably a case that I've heard many more MCs who came before him that I think were much better and he's brought nothing new in subject matter or flow.

His royal albert hall performance with the string section was phenomenal, and showed just how well hiphop can integrate with traditional musical values. For that he gets a  LIGHTAH! and another  LIGHTAH! . And his first two albums were some of the most listenable, coherent pop-hop albums I've ever listened to.

Are you insinuating I came upon hip hop because of Kanye?? That's written as if to say "Well, I listened to Hip Hop before you, so therefore I've a better preposition to judge"...  Bad Teeth

Songs like Jesus Walks and Through the Wire for instance are things that, as far as I know, have never really been touched upon, particularly in terms of mainstream hip hop... no one ever bigged up their (albeit short) college educations... I could go on.

IMO, it's not about better, it's about coming along at a specific time and being refreshing and unashamed of what you are... which, to me, is dope!

Rapper KANYE WEST is turning his back on the genre that made him famous - because hip-hop is becoming too much of a "cliche" for the star.
The stronger hitmaker has opted for a new sound on his latest record, 808s and Heartbreak, singing on the tracks instead of rapping.
West claims his new music has created a new genre, labelling it "pop art", and is adamant that he will not go back to his previous style because he wants to cement his place in musical history.
He says, "This is not hip-hop music. Taking a sample, looping it and doing all that 'throw your hands up in the sky' thing has become such a cliche. Hip-hop is over for me. I sing, not rap, on this album. I now want to be grouped among those musicians you see in those old black-and-white photos - the Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, the Beatles. And I'm not going to get there by doing just another rap album full of samples.

"I've had to create a whole new musical genre to describe what I'm doing now and I'm calling it 'pop-art' - which is not to be confused with the visual art movement."

"I am the voice of my generation"

If auto-tune is the voice of the generation, then yes, yes you are Kanye... Roll Eyes

I still rate all his hip hop music and kind of undecided about 808's... Doesn't do much for me really. He does have a point about the whole sampling cliche deal but he could just, you know, not sample bait tunes so much...

I thought the cliche he's talking about pretty much died in the 90s. So to say it's a cliche is stating the obvious, only he's more than ten years late, and yet by saying that he still thinks he's breaking new ground.  Doh!

Kanye West (i hate even typing his fucking name) will erode any credibility his listeners have and turn them all into gayers.

Let it go man, just let it go...

It's been a long time, there have been many threads, on many topics, most of which are beyond the realms of encyclopedia britannica, some; entirely incomprehensible, some; utterly unspeakable! But now, at last, I have found it. That golden quote! It has been an epic journey, to the very depths of my soul and back, across all far flung corners of the world where Hijackers log on and chart the very limits of their collective existence.. and now afterall, Pins, I can finally rest my bones and say... sigged!
