Well after moving around a few places in Bristol I have come to the conclusion that Montpelier, despite its reputation for good restaurants and baked goods, is a bit of a shit hole.
I lived here a few years ago on upper cheltenham place which was fine, but in my current abode which I have been in for less than two months I have so far witnessed:
My car getting broken into and stereo/contents being stolen.
Constantly standing in dog shit.
Constantly getting woken up by smackheads sulking around at silly o'clock on the morning/crustafarian motor homes smashing up and down the road at all hours scuffling for parking.
My private driveway being used as a regular exchange point for drug deals
General drug/alcohol abuse and homelessness.
Regular fighting/antisocial behavior - This evening in fact a gang of youths attacked a man to steal his bike which he defended valiantly despite his seatpost/saddle being used as a pick axe to his skull.
So basically - don't believe the hype. Everyone swoons when you tell them you live here but I have quickly come to retort how it is essentially an artery for the smacky dregs of society to skulk between Stokes Croft/St Pauls/Gloucester Road etc.
Rant over.

What did you expect? Montpelier is right near the centre of a fairly large city. All the things you've described are part of city life. So are all the great things about Montpelier. They go hand in hand. Having said that, I lived in that area for three years and didn't see that much of what you describe. Maybe you've been unlucky, or perhaps it just bothered me less. Most people who live there are prepared to put up with the odd negative experience because otherwise they think it's a great place to live.

There are many positives yes but is it a rule that to benefit from those things you need to put up with an equal amount of shite. As I said when I lived a little off the main stretch it was awesome but I guess right here you just notice the bad.

There's good points and bad points to wherever you live, you just have to pick your priorities. I used to live in Redland... nice and quiet and leafy, but actually really boring, no sense of community whatsoever (people used to be the sort of young professionals that keep themselves to themselves); no interesting pubs and I kept having the police called on me for playing music not very loud.
Now I live in Montpelier and I must admit any problems I have are similar to the noisy ones you describe - though mainly I think it's just people being loud and lairy when the Star & Garter kicks out rather than the sort of ghetto gangland dealings you're describing, but anyway - and yes I would never leave my bike out front, even chained up; and I certainly cannot argue with you about the dog shit, it's ming. BUT I think apart from that it's a much much more interesting place to live. I love nearly all my local pubs (bar the Star) the guys who work in Ashley stores are the loveliest shop owners I've ever known, I know all my neighbours and we talk all the time and watch out for each other if someone is away; we even had a street party last summer and put sofas and stalls out on the road. I think I will be happier here when can afford double glazing, but other than that I think Montpelier is great.

Stokes Croft/St Pauls/Montpelier the whole place is like a circus i bloody love it. You can walk from the bear pit up to the arches & back at any given time of the day or night and be thoroughly entertained by what comes your way ! or do a mini pub crawl e.g. bell, cadders, old e, star n gar etc then at silly o clock walk up to the mound & there'll be people up there around a fire. I can't think of anywhere else like it Quote from our neighbours at bestival; 'I don't do that unless I'm at a festival or in Bristol'

Is it the don't Panic Crew eating vast quantities of cheap crisps and drinking cartons of rubicon on Rosa Parks Lane then? Sneaky buggers.

Er, so was mine, I don't ACTUALLY believe the Panic crew eat crisps near my house, I was being jocular. although of course, they may. There is excessive in Montpelier mind, especially around the Star and Rosa Parks, a lot of residents go out there with black bin liners when it gets really bad.

I'm sorry but I have to agree... I lived on picton street for a while and had to dodge the dog shit and massive amounts of litter every day. Its almost like people use it as a rubbish tip/bin/toilet on the way to town. oh... and I would wake up to new graffiti on my van every day. There are a lot of nice people living there but its Typical inner city living really. Feels very cramped. Some people call this cosy and character.. I like space. I dont miss it. Its all about Gloucester road living for me

had my car driven into twice while parked there, both times no notes left or anything, just me having to fork out over £1000 to fix my car and picton street is full of poo. i once saw a poo on a box, must of either been a skilled dog or human....

I remember living on bath buildings about 4-5 years ago. Couldn't walk down the road without stepping in shit or some random crusty talking bollox to me.
The house I lived in only had a deadlock on the front door and sometimes my house mates forgot to lock it when leaving or entering the property. On 2 separate occasions we had randomers walking into the house.
First time a scatty crackhead bird walked through the front door and entered my room (first room on the ground floor). I was mixing some tunes and didn't hear her enter but in my peripheral vision I saw something and turned around. Fucking hell, that was horribly shocking! I fell back into my vinyl feeling terrified while she was completely still staring at me. It was like a scene from a horror film when a ghost kreeps up on someone. Then out of the blue, she said 'can I use your toilet'. still in shock I replied 'ok'. Thinking that I might be going mad and this was all happening in my head I called out for my house mate dave who walked in and shouted 'Jesus!'. We both walked her to the toilet where she took a 10min 'piss' then left without saying a word
The second time wasn't that interesting, just a rude boy we chased out of the house with a bat.
Since then I moved to st.andrews and never had a problem

I think you could pick holes about living anywhere. I live in a place with a relatively low crime rate and near a really decent pub and decent links to both Bristol and Bath. It also has a couple of greengrocers, a butcher's, plenty of places to eat, newsagents, supermarket, leisure centre, park etc.
On the flipside it's full of ratty old people, charity shops and pound shops, also an increase in disused units. It also has a busy high street which is a pain in the area to navigate, and buses can be fucking expensive.

I think the dog shit problem in Montpelier is revolting and a point all residents agree, maybe we should band together and see if something can't be done? There's also lots of dogs off leads. I'm sure it is worse than other areas for this.

When I lived in London my best mates house had become the number one toilet for all the local cats. He dealt with it by covering the entire garden with extra hot chilli powder. It worked for a while. I'm not sure if dogs share the same crapping technique, I believe they prefer an elevated poo but I'm no expert

Montpelier seems to be full of people who don't know how to use a bar of soap let alone clear up their doggies street turds. It'll be making its way into the local flapjack soon as a special organic ingredient.

This isn't a new revelation though is it? The dial-a-crack phone box down by the Old E has been like that for the 11 years I've known the area. Montpelier has for the length of time I've known it been a mixing pot of wealthy homeowners (I was looking at £250k - £750k price range when I was house buying 2 years ago, and then skulking off to Easton which was closer to my price bracket...) families, and other types of less permanent residents varying from professionals, students, hostel users and squatters. It's a short cut through to various areas, it's got narrow cluttered poorly lit streets, perfect hunting ground for street criminals, but this is nothing new right? If it was nicer it would be even more expensive, and attract Cliftonites...

I was looking at £250k - £750k price range when I was house buying 2 years ago,
That explains the dog shit. If you can't polish a turd then just move it to Montpelier. you can't polish a turd, but you can roll it in glitter!

This could go down as one of the best rucks in British history. The city centre being left as some sort of post-apocalyptic wasteland strewn with glitter, torn St George flags and mangled dreadlocks.

I think the dog shit problem in Montpelier is revolting and a point all residents agree, maybe we should band together and see if something can't be done? There's also lots of dogs off leads. I'm sure it is worse than other areas for this.
The council should be clearing up the shit, might be worth reporting the problem http://www.bristol.gov.uk/page/dog-and-animal-foulingI contacted them about litter and a dilapidated billboard in my street and by the next evening they'd been and sorted both, I was impressed!

Yeah, because the council and tax payers should be responsible for filthy owners of filthy animals complete lack of personal responsibility and hygiene. It's not like there are widespread cuts everywhere in the public sector; they should be setting up a 24 hour Picton St dogshit helpline.

Last year Montpelier was awarded £48,000 to do something with Albany Park (in front of the Star and Garter), and instantly people started talking about street art and sculptures. How about spending that money on maintaining what is already there? Keeping it clean, a couple more bins (including recycling bins) and an extra street cleaner. Also, while we're at it, how about involving the school? The kids from the Primary school are obviously the main culprits of all the pop cartons and sweet wrappers. How about going into the school and teaching the children about the importance of not littering and making the kids clear up all their rubbish so they get into the habit of not doing it.

This should be the responsibility of parent's, residents, teachers and users of the area, not the burden of the tax payer. You can't legislate for personal responsibility.

This should be the responsibility of parent's, residents, teachers and users of the area, not the burden of the tax payer. You can't legislate for personal responsibility. Yes it should be, and if this was an ideal world it would be; but people aren't doing it.The council and residents put up signs and notices about dog muck and litter and people don't pay any attention. Kids are out there all the time without adult supervision and you try telling off someone else's kid for littering in the day and age. There are lots of lovely residents in Montpelier who I've seen get out there with bin liners and I bet they are tax payers as well. All I'm saying is that the council are great at wasting money on useless projects when money could be directed at more sanitation and street cleaning. That is what council tax is supposed to be for! They could bring more, and harsher, on-the-spot fines, but it would still need enforcing.

Maintaining the play area and keeping it clean would be a great idea. Last summer there were a few trampy-types who took up residents on matresses there as well. I felt a bit sorry for the kids trying to play while some piss head lay surrounded by filth in their playground It's hard to explain to kids about littering when there are grown men laying in piles of beer cans and needles.

Could you not use the grown men surrounded by cans & needles as an example of what happens if you don't pick your litter up?

Hey dont shoot the messenger, the council say themselves its their responsibility to clear up the poo, and enforce dog fouling laws. So in response to your slightly sarcastic comment, yes, it is the council and taxpayers responsibility. That's why we pay tax to have a dog warden service is it not?

Ha, only two months ago I was telling you how you would love it here once you moved...woops.
I thought Upper Cheltenham was meant to be one of the smarter roads, although it is probably the least well lit so I can understand car crime. Montpelier is a mix, it's a bit of a draw with neighbours, they can be from both ends of the spectrums, either middle class families (young kids etc) or all the way to rented house with K heads. I live on Shaftesbury Avenue and it's chilled, I do get woken up by the odd fuck head crew waking though at silly hours, which I imagine as the summer comes in, will only get worse.
Dog shit - this is a problem. Parking is a pain in the arse.
My hope is as the summer rolls in you'll start to see the good parts of it and enjoy the vibe and brilliant location to the city and nightlife, I wouldn't say there are good restaurants in montpeiler but there are some near by, but some good pubs though! Plus I find I bump into so many people I know in the area.
I've had friends with problems of drugs in private front gardens..it sounds lame to do but they saw results by reporting it and shouting out the window etc and it did die down...although this is not a nice thing to have to do and can be intimidating. Sounds like you've witnessed some quite extreme events. If you can try and get a room at the back of the house hopefully you should not be disturbed by events from the streets at night.
You've got my number, come round for a mix some time.
