You would want to split the signal into two cables on for each minirig - one cable would have the right channel mapped to both left and right on the connector, the other would have the channel mapped to left and right on the connector. That would do it,

Dual mono does not equal Stereo. EDIT: Ok, actually looked at the link now. Yeh that would work. At first glance it looks like one of those headphone sharing cables, but it's not. The red and white are a clue

Yea thats how you do it. I have one of those cables.
There is no use in trying to do stereo sound unless the left right speakers are >1m apart imho.... I alway laugh at those little ipod docks with the "stereo" sound with speakers 10cm apart... entirely pointless.

They look wicked!
I think it would be a very good idea if you could have a pic on the website showing them next to something like an iphone so that you can get some scale. I know it says 3" but often people just look at pics and from those pics they could be any size. It would help people really appreciate how compact they are.

If they're angled properly chance you'll get a good image at a very specific distance but it'll still sound shite due to them basically having headphone drivers in there. Your gear on the other hand.... How well would they survive the rain btw? I'm stuck between 12V car system in sealed box or two of these minirigs to get tunes into me garden. They'd be under cover in a little shack/pergola type of thing but I don't want to end up with something that'll die from condensation or humidity.

I've had various boomboxes, most of which are from the 1980's so sound a bit shitty when you pump them up without careful eqing. I recently got an old JVC Kaboom which is massive and absolutely pumps, but it comes at a price - huge, heavy and sucks up 10d batteries in no time.
Dave... Maybe you should also offer a 'pimp my boombox' service? Replace internals with a line in and charger socket that splits to a couple of minirigs behind each speaker grill. Modern sound and battery life meets classic styling!

I'm no expert, but I would argue that seperating the signal into two speakers will help recordings which have lots of wide stereo processing caused by phase manipulation, thus avoiding potential nulls which you would get when summed to mono. I agree, you don't get perfect stereo with a unit that is so small, however; some issues with summed stereo to mono are potentially circumvented. Also consumers don't like to buy mono, as it is soo 1960's.

I just got the aluminium back from the anodising shop and put the first of the 10 new prototypes together.. looks sooo cool with the smooth anodised alu. I'l take some nice pics and post them.
Yea I bought an old boombox with the idea of pimping it up... its not as easy as it sounds. You need custom mechanical fixing points to put any different speakers inside and all in all its a shit load of work and not really profitable as a business unless you charge several hundred quid each time. I may get round to doing one for myself if I find some free time which isn't likely at the mo

its wicked that these are only 3", but is there any plan to do a bigger one? 3" is awesomely compact but i could handle the hassle of lugging a bigger one around for the sake of bigger sound.. a 6" or 10" wouldnt go a miss - bigger sound, bigger battery etc.. do you think that could be on the cards?

Thats why I love my mk1. Slightly bigger/heavier, but a larger driver and festival strength battery pack. However, these latest ones are much more commecially viable IMO.

Yo
so orders are finally being placed for parts for first production run... lead times and shipping means that it looks like sept/oct before the first ones will be coming out on sale. It'l be worth the wait though.
I'l send out an email to the mailing list very soon

excellent, ready to slap down my cash for this.
one last question before i order, has anyone heard both one of these minirigs, as well as a logitech pure-fi anywhere.
i quite like the logitech jobby, better than all the other speaker docks i've used, could just use a bit more oomph and more battery life. clearly the battery on the minirig is gonna be the answer, how about about volume?

Yea I've listened to the Pure-Fi. I have to admit that it is good but the best of a bad bunch as it follows the same poor formula as all other ipod docks. two small cheap 2" speakers, made from cheap plastic and a has a cheap low capacity battery. I've got a Logitech S315i and the Minirig pissed all over it in sound quality and volume.
plus you can't link them up with your mates... which is the best bit!
but of course I am biased in my opinion but believe the Minirig is a different beast to ipod docks you can buy in the shops.

Cheers mate!
yea I know its annoying having to wait, but they need to be 100% perfect and I don't want to rush them out. The lead time will go down once I can put more of my time into assembly. Who knows, maybe I'll be able to afford a helper some day!
I have an x-mini - great product for the price. Minirig definitely sounds 4x better!

well i got quite a few mates who went absolutely nuts for the xmini so i'm sure if this is as good as it will be i will highly recommend it to anyone - although im sure by the sounds of things anyone who sees/hears it will instantly be askin so it looks like it'll be promoting itself in no time
shame these didnt make it for the summer season as down the park with a few beers is where these really come into their own
