But then why anyone would buy a console over a PC is beyond me too.

for me it's because I spend all day on a computer and so being able to sit on my sofa with a controller makes it feel like I've actually had some leisure time instead of just going from one computer to another, it's a mental thing as much as anything

Fancy lighting etc isn't that big a draw for me, I just want well thought out challenging games, not Demon Souls type of challenge, that is just stupid, but intriguing and with a good story line. Too many games have repetitive actions (like Far Cry 3) or corridor shooters which don't require much thought. What happened to puzzles and action?

I don't need a PC for gaming as I play about 5 hours a week and a thousand pound rig would be a total waste on me. Consoles provided immediacy and a stable platform without the worry that I'm not getting the most out of the game because the graphics card is a year old.

Eh? This statement makes no sense. If you're not into "Fancy lighting", then why should you care about your graphics card?

Cheap laptops are a few hundred quid now, GOG.com has some absolutely blinding classics for pennies, and the number of outstanding 'indie' games coming out needs to be seen to be believed. And as Xbox now seems to want to kill of that whole scene, there's never been a better time to get into it. Honestly, you won't regret it.

It was an example that PC games all too often rely on up-to-date tech to get the most out of them, whereas a console is standardised and therefore the developers know what the limits are. I know that irritates PC gamers.

Laptop? No thanks. I got one for live music work recently, as it is an avenue I'm looking into, but I've never understood the desire to own a laptop for anything other than portable use.

I don't mean to point out the obvious, but for the couple of hundred quid cost of consoles when they came out, could easily be put into a decent graphics card and some more RAM that would future proofed you up to the next releases of the P$4 etc, admittedly you'd have to turn down some graphic options as the years went on, but console graphics are never on a par with their PC equivalents, so you wouldn't notice!

That said, I totally see where you are coming from about the appeal of a standardised format for gamers, one off cost etc...

Just like Apple is technology for stupid people,

Consoles are PC's for stupid people...

Oh dear.

Saying Microsoft are anti-indy is ridiculous. The reason they are making games unsharable is that it mean more money for development houses / publishers. More money means that more risks can be taken. And they support indy developers a shit ton more than Sony ever have. Their online marketplace was backwards from the inception.

As for console vs PC - MN3102 and Block Party have it spot on. It just plays when you put it in. No worrying about making your textures right, having the right driver for your graphics card, making sure you have the right graphics card, updating spec etc.

You have a piece of equipment that is certain to work and be catered to for an 8 year period that is cheaper than a top spec PC, and won't need it's gubbins fiddled with every year. Admittedly it caters more to "lad" gaming, but you also get a shed load of interesting indy titles, and titles that don't show on PC's for months, if ever.

I couldn't care less about graphic superiority. It just has to work well and be fun. That's it.

I'm not sure you've really thought this through, but Xbox are famous for making life for indy developers lives extremely difficult. I forget where I read it, but the Braid developer has said he'll never work with X-box again, and he's not alone. Now that is a bold statement, but if I come across it again I'll send it your way. The gist though was that Xbox were making ridiculous request of developers, and making some really stupid mistakes in their dealings with them which left them out of pocket and pretty angry. No, the Microsoft way is to help the big companies from now on, and not even Steam is that bad.

As to drivers/textures/gubbins, I don't think I've ever had a problem with any of that EVER, and I've used PC for over 15 years. Maybe once, long ago before internet was ubiquitous and most games sorted themselves out automatically (actually I do remember TIE fighter was a bit of a bitch, but that was 1995).

i was yawning at the school playground argument about 'pc's are better than consoles'
Honestly who cares? I regularly play on the both (currently Alan Wake on pc and Skyrim on Xbox) and see the benefits of both

Great, but I actively participate in these as I want more people to play PC games, as that will ensure the future of my favourite hobby.

I also deplore the blind "Mine's better than yours" debate, but thoroughly enjoy a decent conversation about the merits of all systems.

I also try to bring some adult conversation to the debate.

I'm interested in it. It is by Naughty Dog and the Uncharted games look good and play well, although the last one had too many cut scenes which broke the action. Reviews are very positive about Last of Us (go to Pink Planet Bedmo if you need it today Wink ) but I've seen on wiki Polygon's review which says : "forcing players to constantly fight off waves of enemies in order to progress, which the reviewer found to be jarring in comparison to the rest of the game. The reviewer also described the combat as "messy" and that the player was constantly forced to restart from checkpoints." That is slightly off putting as I'm kind off sick of zombie games, but the rest of the aspects of most reviews seem to be very positive.

I'll check it when I'm done with AC3 (and Deadly Preminition).

Yeah I agree, I was even more excited about it until I read about the 'infected', zombie style enemies. I thought the idea of just having other surviving humans as enemies would have been a lot braver and more interesting for a game. But I guess that just would have been entirely ripping-off The Road, even more than it already is.

I like consoles as I can look down on them and got into PC because I wanted Higher resolution gaming.
I was gaming at 1280 x 1024 whilst people still thought the PS1 was the shit.

Now I revel in high fidelity AAA games which is why COD has sucked balls IMO since modern warfare.

Batman Arkham city with everything including physX turned up to 11 is a tour de force on PC (although it didn't work properly for months after its delayed release)

PS4s tech demo is nice
http://www.youtube.com/v/BqeuHGESZBA

Yes games can be fun but I like immersive and graphics grunt gives you that in spades.

Bought the Dungeons and Dragons pack. $22 for 10 of them, and some of them are the best RPG's ever written.

Its very clunky compared to batman, just to warn you.
But
the city is good,
character are good,
story is good.

It is good, just not batman.

Turn the graphics up to 11 and enjoy.

It was a good romp. A touch repetitive, but pretty and an amusing plot line.

I'm growing weary with Walking Dead, I'm almost considering stopping playing it and going back to Deadly Premonition, which whilst achingly slow is bizarre and humorous in parts.

It's taken the game from being an enjoyable but flawed game (particularly in the later parts) to being absolutely fantastic.

Think Risk meets command and conquer, with loads of different nationalities as teams, and you essentially try to win by certain conditions - i.e. Culture, Science, Social, Religious, Warfare etc in rather large worlds.

Loads of mods and stuff that add to the game too.

B'tol you need to sell Civ 5 to me too.

I've tried getting into it but it is so radically different to 4 that it just annoyts me.

It now has all the knobs and whistles of 4 - proper religion, trade etc. But you need both the add on packs. I was pretty non-plussed with it until Gods and Kings add on came out. Now the third one is here it is a million times more interesting.

My favourite ever game, every single time it comes out.

Clash with other civilizations in the fields of science, culture and war, build world wonders and improve the land, and finally dominate the world. And that only scratches the surface.

I LOVE this game more than any other, and have done for the last 20 years.
