If I'm honest I was hoping for more from Navaho's contribution to a debate on racism.

Something about Belgium? Fuck knows what I was thinking. I'm blaming drugs.  Laugh

Well, job done then on my part.  Two Thumbs Although I maybe pushed it a bit too far when people started threatening me with real-life ass-kickings.

Who has made a threat to kick your ass ?

Nobody, overtly. But Justin as good as said "if you said that to me in real life there would be consequences, of which you would be afraid". Not that I take it seriously. I'd be quite the hypocrit if I started taking the internet seriously. Also I'm sure you realised fairly early on this whole thing was part-troll from me. My honest opinion though is that this sort of "offensiveness" is only given credence by people going on about it. Its a bit like that daft Andrew Sachs/Russell Brand thing. People think "I'm offended" is the right phrase to use whenever they disagree with something. Most of those people and probably most of these people aren't "offended". When you're "offended" you go home later that day and you're still seething about it. Being offended is to experience a personal affront that stays with you beyond the meagre 5 seconds you spend being "offended" about something like this. The whole thing just doesn't warrant mentioning, and I'd sooner take the piss out of the whole notion that this is worthy of debate rather than actually seriously debate it.

Eek Serious? I give it large with all the talk but 90% of people who are as tall as me could kick my arse to Truro and back without breaking a sweat. There aren't many people as tall as me, but fuck me I am actually quite afraid of them.

You kids today are so uncertain of what is okay or not okay when it comes to race..and so afraid to have any ideas of your own and so quick to put down people who might be a millimetre over the line of what is politically right on...

I recall that the Black and White minstrel show stopped going out because it was a bit dated as Saturday night entertainment come the late sixties..i don't recall people being upset about it until much later...i certainly thought as a kid it was a homage to the great black singers and the songs from the Southern states of america....how are we ever going to get on as people if we can't speak with ease about another person or race

posting stuff on here about something like a party shop or whatever it was is just mischevious and inflammatory..nobody is any the wiser for it

Completely disagree, you patronising old git  Two Thumbs

*edit* well nort about the minstrel show, that was before my time - I just know what people today say about it.

You kids today are so uncertain of what is okay or not okay when it comes to race

I genuinely feel like this. It's silly. I've never met a proper racist and fail to see why I should censor myself to such a high degree.

I'm obviously aware that racists exist but aren't they now the minority?

It is silly too...i feel sorry for people who are unable to speak openly about how they see things..yeserday at Glens we had a conversation about old music..Glen said  "how come white people know more about our music than we do?"  so i said that Jamaicans aren't so intersted in what happpened yesterday musically only in what happens now..it must be brand new  but English people or some of us at least hold original Jamaican music in very high esteem"  the next guy in the queue said "true dat" and we chatted about other things pertaining to each others culture, got our food and left...nobody got upset or took offence because none was meant.

Racism is all over the place but it's not so bad as it was when i was young...however we must be free to talk and express ourselves and above all not to take it all too seriously when we talk to each other..exchange of ideas is the bridge across our divides and brings us closer to our neighbours.

What's that got to do with this? Obviously there are differences between racial groups. So what? I'm very comfortable with my attitude to race, and I think the picture in question is in comically backwards taste. There's no uncertainty r inability to speak openly about it at all. Don't really get where you're going with it tbh

Living room racism, belittling of ethnic groups and racist jokes historically has been the start of dehumanising different peoples and the build up to scapegoating and things a lot worse.

No no, historically the start of dehumanising different peoples was shoving them on boats, transporting them across the sea and selling those that survived to fat white men. I think living room racism happens somewhere towards the end of the struggle to reinstate those peoples as free members of society.

don't take what i said as a personal attack on you..i don't know how you are with it at all..my remarks were general about attitudes to race among young people...however as you posted it in the first place then what i said is mild criticism of you on that note...what Noodle said in the begining was a fair enough statement...i don't have a problem with the picture and i wouldn't hold it up and urge others to comment on it...as i said it was mischevious...

besides it is common knowledge that whenevr Noodle is attacked on here i will be ready to spring forward and defend..we are a mutual admiration society Laughing

Yeah because there wasn't a campaign of belittling people in Rwanda or Nazi germany was there? And the reason the slave trade flourished is people were sold on the idea that black people were savages and different, lesser people who it was ok to buy and sell.

Got to say, I agree with Mr Rice on this one.

I also think it's a bit unfair to change the thread title name to what is now an attack on Noodle.

I'm currently working on my post-grad thesis and I'm writing about dubstep in Bristol.

I would go out more often if the sound quality was better in clubs.

People are far too eager to label someone else as a racist these days.

you live in oz...that's probably the second most racist country on the planet...

Not overtly...it doesn't come across as intentional racism, just naivety (as far as blacks are concerned - Asians are another case entirely)

Got to say, I agree with Mr Rice on this one.

I also think it's a bit unfair to change the thread title name to what is now an attack on Noodle.

You might loathe what he says, but don't resort to playground tactics. Two Thumbs

Alright, maybe I got a bit carried away with the belmfest yesterday, I don't mean anything personally against Noodle.

This place is driving me mental. Everything gets taken to the most extreme degree, usually by virtue of Noodle's vitriol. Now all you doofuses are wading in with the 'chill out, why's everyone making such a fuss' bullshit. Meeeehhhh. It's a backwards bit of merchandise that belongs in the 60s, not the third reich. Now it's a 3 page belmfest.

It is possible to find something offensive and maintain perspective.

If noodle wasn't so quick to belittle and insult people in over half the threads he posts in I would agree with you. However, Noodle is pretty quick with the insults so I have zero sympathy for him on this occassion

The ultimate irony of the Internet... Where everyone who "doesn't take it seriously" tells everyone else to calm down.

This did what I hoped my peado thread would do.

Noodle, arguing the opposite of everything doesn't make you more intelligent, it makes you a bit of a dick.

Ewan, you're a bit of a fass sometimes.

Just because Steve Rice is old, doesn't mean he's always right.

I'm 8 foot 6 and 27 stone by the way, so if anyone's got a problem with any of those statements I will happily fuck your bracket right up.

No it makes me look like a dick and gets everyone's backs up. This thread is the main reason why I didn't send a well shirty email to my boss yesterday. It gave me someone else to fight with and that's a good thing from my point of view. Seems to have a pissed a few hijackers off though.  Cheesy

@Noodle: in that it's a highly contentious issue that masks something that we really need to address... But it will also expose peoples prejudice's and stupidity...

And Steve being old makes him less likely to be right!   Bad Teeth

He is right on this one though.

Am I right in thinking that the term "belm" means sticking your tongue in your bottom lip and inferring that someone is in some way cerebrally challenged? Usually followed by the term "you spaz"? Surely that is a pretty offensive term to use or am I wrong in my understanding. Just seems like its a bit ihypocritical that the thread starter is offended by one thing which affects a body of people, but is fine with using another term that offends a different body of people.

This was discussed at length here http://www.hijackbristol.co.uk/board/the-forum/spazzy/

It doesn't matter what colour people's skin is, it just needs to be thicker.
