As so many have said, a sad day. I know a few people who run record shops like ETB and they're all struggling. Personally I prefer shopping in little independents like ETB to getting stuff online, but I seem to be in the minority. Sadly, it just seems to be the way of the world. Downloading sucks and vinyl rocks - why can't people see that?

Good luck for the future James, Paul and co. See you on the other side  Two Thumbs (well, obviously I'll be in to peruse sale stock... )

This is a sad day for bristol people. apart from the independant record shops doing less business issue, ETB has been a institution in bristol for many a year now. they/we have promoted some good/bad parties, wronged it at many a club(I think james has puked in every single club in bristol) met almost everyone into the bristol music scene(plus some VIPs along the way) and almost all the customers were sound.(as you well know)

I've been linked to the shop as a customer, friend, employee, D&B dogsbody, DJ and all round pisshead and to be honest I am truly gutted.

The best thing about ETB for me is that I was the first and only employee in its history to get a written warning. The reason? for swearing too much at Jon and trying to change my DJ name!

I remember that shop being rammed with people buying records and turning up just for the hell of it, wasting a day chatting bollox and arguing about why house is shit and D&B is great. It hasn't been as busy like that for a while now, which is a crime. I still go in and chat shit, but it worries me that the old ways of hooking up in GOOD! record stores and meeting people who are into music don't happen anymore. that used to be how you found out what peeps, looked like what they were up to and alot of the time how you got booked to play out.

people need to get out there again and meet real people and support your local record shops, clubs, whatever it is...otherwise your just going to have a load of weird fuckers telling everyone they are wrong and their music is shit, whilst wanking off to porn on broadband, eating a pack of wotsits.and who wants an orange knob?

people like James, Jon, Jez, Mark, Paul, Eddie,Myself,Little Joe, Hoop and anyone who helped ETB, really bust a gut to do something different and make a mark in the bristol music scene for good reasons.

From all these comments I think it worked but I do worry about the future of music and the people within it. Its something I hold dear and with ETB going another thing that is good about the bristol music scene is gone.

sorry if anyone thinks I'm moaning, but support independants etc cos when they are gone they are gone. an Mr HMV is a cnut

i am gutted Cry

I must admit that I have rarely (if ever) bought anything in ETB as it didn't stock the rekkids I play but whenever I have been in there James and crew have been exceptionally welcoming and friendly - even to me the promotertosser who just goes in there to put up my advertising!

ETB's demise should be mourned properly as we have lost another independent music outlet which is likely to affect Bristol's music scene in an adverse manner.

@Pattern against user - sure downloads kill independents but just as important is not buying from the likes of HMV, Virgin and FOPP (especially fopp). Shop local.

Best of luck with your future plans guys.

I feel the need to apologise here for the time I came in with Doormouse and he asked if he could use your toilet, then proceeded to make it smell like he'd dropped a four week dead dog out of his ass (that's what it smelt like from the shop anyway). Sorry about that.

one of the things i will always treasure from this place is the generall whiff of bloke, a heady brew of fags beer, sweat and fart that seldom leaves the shop completely. consider yourself forgiven.

really really sad to hear this James.

Eat the Beat was the first place i went in Bristol to ask for advice on life in the pirate city. James and crew proceeded to help me look in the right places for a place to live, a job and where to party.I was blown away by how friendly and helpful they were in comparison to say, the tourist information centre. I think that the place was amazing, and the art events exposed me to a lot of stuff i would otherwise have never seen.

I'll be down soon to pay my respects and see whats left for me to take home as presents  Tomato Bad Teeth

Sorry to hear this. I've been quietly buying stuff from ETB since my mate Tom the raver took me there early in '97 and I bought T3 by Rufige Kru - can't have been long after the place opened. I remember there being hardly any records, but a great vibe - reckon you achieved a great deal in building the place up. All good things come to and end I suppose.

Isn't it the likes of Chemical, Juno, Redeye, Boomkat websites that are bringing about the end of the local indie shop? Virgin and co sell different music...

good point actually, i hadn't really considered the threat of other, bigger indie stores online. whatever, it should serve as a warning to us all that the stores we take for granted won't always be there and should be supported wherever possible instead of goin straight to the big nationals.
