after nine years punting out vinyl and banter to the good people of bristol and the wider world, we've decided the time has finally come to close our doors.

we'd like to extend a huge thankyou to everyone who has supported and contributed to the shop over the years, be they suppliers, artists or customers - you have made this shop a success in more ways than one.

we'll be shutting the doors for the final time on friday december 16th, untill which time we'll be open daily from 12 midday till 5.30pm. please pop by to say hi and bye, and enjoy the bargains to be had in the closing down sale!

the eat the beat jocks will still be manning the decks at various residencies around the city, we look forward to seeing you.

masssive love for all your support, james & co.

But...but why?

Because nobody buys records any more due to file sharing on the internet and the ease of burning / copying cds. Simple as that.

It is the death of an industry.

On a personal note i'd like to thank James & Paul & Guinness & Joe & co (and also John and Eddie from years gone by) for selling me some top records and for putting up with me everyday when I worked on the same street. Massive respect in staying true to quality underground dance music and avoiding the electro/funky bandwagon that most promoters / djs have jumped on over the last year.

Good luck boys....

 Eek

ETBR has always been a part of my culture, and have been buying records there for years..

In fact, I think i was ETBR's VERY FIRST customer when i used to work opposite.. Back in the good ol dayz when Jon, Jezza, and the other guy with the furry chin was there!!

Always thought it had gone down hill, once they left!!! Hehehehehe Only Jokin Smallsy, you know your the only reason why people go in that shop!!! Perhaps thats the problem.... they forget about buying records after being graced with the almighty presence.... what the fuk am i goin on about!!??!

This is a sad sad day...  Cry

Best of luck tho with future plans...

i really hope that the closing of so many indie stores will start to make people think twice about just downloading all their music. maybe instead buying the latest big name artist from some vacuous cd shopping centre staffed by spotty little teenagers who listen to green day all day just downloading the thing is doing everyone a favour (keeping the music industry fairer n'everything in my opinion  Tongue) but when it comes to independent record stores, independent labels and independent artists living to produce/promote what they want and not as a profit-making organisation per se it is our duty as people who enjoy it to support it, otherwise the whole damn industry will collapse under the weight of amazon and virgin megastore. i know people on here don't download as much, and are happier to support but it is happening and it really pisses me off that soon in bristol we will have little more choice of where to buy music than hmv or virgin megastore. this is a sad, sad passing, record stores need protecting. rant over.

Look at Redeye. Tiny shop in Ipswich, massive net presence (at least in D+B), and they're successful.

Though I agree with all the principles in Pateern Against User's post there are things the indies can do to embrace changes and limit probs. The main problem I can see here tho is that to be fair the online parts of stores have been around for a while now making it more difficult for another to come in and take a prominent position in the market.

well yeah but you have to agree that a lot of the download culture will kill off small stores in time (it is happening already) and while mail order is one way of staying in business (a very good way) it will not stop lazy thoughtless people just using p2p software to get the music they want. why would you pay for something that is free? i have found it very useful in the past to download a track of something i will then buy, but that is a different thing. to be honest i dont know what the solution is other than to make conscious attempts to help the little guys out whenever it's possible.

This is a real shame. I must admit I do download a fair bit of music, but I also buy the same amount of wax as I did before I could download a thing. The loss of another quality independant is really not good - i really hope we dont see the same thing happen to replay or rooted or i'll be fooked and mightily pissed off

lovely shop - lovely people.

its all online shopping these days ?!  can't you carry on the name like that somehow Huh

it was strange to find out when i was over in oz last week that loads of the DJs bought from streetwisemusic.co.uk because even with the postage it was still cheaper than if they went to their local record store!!  its the way forward and i personally think the reason why all these lovely shops are shutting.

thanks for all the good wishes and support everyone, it's great to know we have been so warmly regarded over the years. I won't try to answer all the questions above but in a nutshell:

downloads have massively affected sales to the point where we can't continue. we tried to fight back with our website, but as someone rightly pointed out, there's shops like piccadilly and chemical that have had their games locked down for a long time and it's very difficult to get a foothold in that market now without a shedload of dough to throw at marketing, and even some of the well established sites are struggling and doing less than they were.

at the end of the day though, the business side of it can go hang, what's important is the music continuing and people doing drugs and dancing will always be more important than the format the dj is playing, viva la vinyl, but also viva raving!

Paul and I have both got interesting new jobs starting in January, so we'll be ok for beer tokens, and for the person who asked about discount:

again, much love for all the support and sympathy,
