Its like an internal monalouge and i can turn on the voice part of me so i talk or start typing but equally i can turn off the voice and stop but the voice still chugs away.

So if im constructing a sentance i can think ahead and it sounds like my voice - for example - but if im thinking about directions i dont think left, right, straight ahead i just picture an image.

my point is i can decide what the voice says although intrestingly when i try and make it do another voice like that of Darth Vaders im only able to control it in the same way i would be controlling my real voice and can't instantly replecate Lord Vader.

I guess what im saying is can someone try speaking like Darth Vader in their head and let me know if you really think you are close to the mark?

In answer to your question:

Yes I can make the voice in my head sound like Darth Vader. It's not that good though, it just sounds like me doing a bad impression.

Northern Irish people overuse the letter Y, as in "get doywne from thar noywe!" Makes I chuckle. I could listen to bertie ahern for hours.

How about doing a rendition of a tune you like and know well, in your head.  Try and make it 'sound' as accurate as possible.  How many parts of a section of the tune can you get rolling at once?

EDIT: Ha!  I'm reading all the posts as Frank Spencer.

Sometimes i hear Alan Dale (sp?) in my head...

Not in his Lost or Ugly Betty or Spamalot guise, but as Jim Robinson; moaning about that guy trying to steal his plans for a new type of fuel injector.

I actually understand what you mean (I think) - which has actually worried me quite a bit...

When I try to continue the internal voice in the voice of darth vader, it's not fluent, and I have to deliberately focus the words, as if I was speaking aloud. However, when I'm normally thinking of a sentence, or words to say in my head, they are in my own voice.

Is that sort of what you are saying?

For almost a year after moving back from spain my inner monologue was in spanish.  Made for some uncomfortable silences when I was unable to translate what I wanted to say back in to english.  Also it was in the voice of my best mate out there and not mine.  He's a boy.  Undecided

Now playing in Dan's head: Congo Natty - Police in Helicopter. I've got all the sounds going but the topcat vocal is just an incomprehensible string of consonants... So probably got it about right.  Pimp

It seems that I have to really think about it to do a normal sentence in my head in the voice of someone else - plus it's not very fluid at all. However I can imitate a song perfectly, i.e. I just sounded exactly like KRS-One a minute ago Laugh

I have an internal radio station and always have done, if I tune in I find the randomest tunes playing, Its like having my own personal DJ who lives in my head, he's been playing me lots of dubstep this week, but I often get the odd 60s and 70s classic thrown in, and 80s film theme tunes.

Yeah I have that too, particularly if I'm walking somewhere. I've had the same tune going round my head over the last few days though so I wouldn't exactly call it a radio station!

I still think in spanish now every so often.  I also quite often have two inner monlogues running side by side, i guess it would be like imagining a conversation.  Does anyone else get that?  Embarrassed

You weren't walking along Park Row singing something about your gun at 2.30ish am this morning were you?  I was in my mates flat trying to sleep and all I could hear was somebody singing the same bit of something round and round outside.  At 4.30am some cunts came past and one of them just continually shouted, 'you fucking dick', over and over.

I think to have one song in your head going round like that is normal but Emma must have an extra special version of it that can change the tune more often.

When I try to continue the internal voice in the voice of darth vader, it's not fluent, and I have to deliberately focus the words, as if I was speaking aloud. However, when I'm normally thinking of a sentence, or words to say in my head, they are in my own voice.

Is that sort of what you are saying?

Yes. I think it is.

it scares the hell out of me. but i've often wondered if your meant to have the internal monologe.

But take it to another level and if you tell the voice in your head to think something that clearly you would not do in normal life i.e scream manically what exaclty is it thats stopping you from screaming and is this all that seperates you from Schizophrenia.

What would happen if I or you started taking anti schizophrenic drugs? would it turn the internal voice off?

And what if you just wanted the internal voice off because it was doing things that you did not like - for example experimenting with scremaing manically?

You know what, I really don't know. when i sit there it runs free often although not always spouting gibbersish - much like if you were to start going blaaah blaag spongledey murgle murgle - although like the thread title suggest i can control i.e stop it or make it sound like Darth Vader.

hmmm... well i'd say if you told your gp about this he might prescribe anti-psychotics and possibly suggest a lie down in a psychiatric unit, i think david icke hears voices in his mind, have you been hanging around on his forum & reading about this kind of stuff there?

To be honest I have that. Sometimes I just sit there or am walking along just making noises. It's actually pretty fun to do.

I'm not sure anti-schizophrenia drugs would stop the inner monologue, they would bio-chemically change the processes in your brain that cause schizophrenia, but I should imagine that's somewhat seperate to normal 'thinking'.

All the 'inner voice' is, is you thinking. I can make it tell me to do something wrong or bad, but at the end of the day, it's me saying that. I can switch it to say 'look at that tree', it's not like it isn't me. At some level it's highly likely that it is just you controlling it consciously, if you really don't think it is, perhaps try and speak to your doctor about it - but incidence of those sorts of conditions aren't all that frequent.  Two Thumbs

There's two feedback paths for hearing your own voice; out the mouth and through the ears (air duction), or via vibrations within your bones directly to the inner ear (bone duction). Hearing people mostly rely on air duction, whereas the fully deaf have only bone duction, which is limited in freqency and sensitivity. Thats why people who were born deaf have a characteristic speech defect; bone duction only provides enough feedback for them to hear, and thus develop, certain sounds when they speak.  NERD ALERT!
