Hey guys,

Next summer I would like to get involved doing an internship for a record label based in Bristol. I want to start applying early so I have more of a chance of getting one. Has anybody had any experience in doing this before that could tell me what exactly it involved, what label it was with, and how they managed to get the position?

As far as music goes, I'm open to most things, although I prefer most kinds of bass heavy music, of which there are plenty of labels which cater to that in Bris obviously! Can anybody recommend some major (relatively speaking, of course) labels situated in the Bristol area that may be worth hitting up?

Thanks!

I don't know much about anything, but theres a few people on here running labels. I doubt many are large enough to take on an intern. Though you could try...

Yeah checked out the site, looks like a tasty studio!

It's not just a studio though is it? I'm guessing since there are a bunch of labels based there that there must be some form of offices nearby? I have no idea tbh, I'm not sure how things work with smaller indie labels, although I suppose the whole point of doing an internship is to learn these things Smiley

Cheers guys, I'll get in contact asap.

There's apparently a strange grey area on internships. I spent a few months earlier this year looking about for one, and went as far as getting interviewed by a large house / techno agency/ record label but wasn't successful - I applied and inquired all over the place and one of the companies that got back, (which are a very large artist booking agency) quizzed me on why I was searching for an internship. They understood that internships were not something that they looked at as fair and were against them. They believed that it was free labour and that if a company has work to give someone, that they should pay for it, unless it were very basic responsibilities or just observational purposes. They also went as far as to say that there are legislations coming in (or are already in place) that prevents a company taking advantage of free labour/ internships.

I've been told various things when inquiring about internships, one company told me I have too much experience and would be better suited to a job and the other said Due to the sensitive and  confidential nature of their business and in order to protect their artists, they do not currently take on work experience or interns.

I haven't been able to find anything regarding the legislations preventing interns from accuring experience anywhere, so I'm not 100% on what they informed me of. I completely see the point of internships, what with someone gaining valuable experience in an industry that's hard to break into, whilst showing commitment and enthusiasm for putting yourself out there. And a industry like music or film, it's foundations are built on something like this. Surely if both parties agree to the terms, everyone's winning, right?

Has anyone else come across this?

i think it depends on the nature of the internship... promise of a job after that doesn't materialise?... can happen... there is a fairly succesful bristol animation company that, um , allows, well no, asks people to work for them for nothing on their personal projects, then when some paid work comes along sorts them out, as far as i know they don't employ any other way...

i was about to write about another company that employs people as runners etc as the ethical example but i just remembered they pulled a swifty on someone from hijack  Undecided

to be frank i think it's a bit like the cycle of abuse continuing in the media rather than this wonderful working practice... people who've had to work for nothing getting the hump and doing the same thing once they are in the employers seat

but yes... if people want to do it and everyones clear about it up front i suppose it's up to them... some (most?, wheres my lawyer Wink ) of the publishers in bath can be very cheeky about this kind of thing... diddling freelancers about rather than work experience.... implied paid work that turns out not to be shall we say..., i've sat opposite a very senior person from one of the, um, largest of these companies Wink and one of his editors on the train and from that conversation it was very clear that the editor was only to worry about copyright infringement and plagarism if the other party was big enough to sue... the same company has quite a track record amongst people i know for commissioning websites, getting people to do quite a bit of the work on them, developing ideas etc, then the phone goes dead and they either do it themselves or get a student to do it for tuppence, a classic move that one it seems...

Interesting points guys and ones that a lot of my friends have discussed before, particularly as we our coming to the end of our 3 year university stint. As far as I'm concerned in this current economic climate, I should be thankful for the chance to do an internship for a semi-successful company, even if it is for no pay. For me personally, this is definitely not primarily about money or the prospect of a paid job (although that would be nice), I simply am really interested in learning the ins and outs of how record labels function in this day and age. At this point in my life, I don't really know what I want to do career wise straight after graduation, but I know that one day in the future I would love to be able to run my own label to release both mine, and others music to the public so this is valuable knowledge as far as I'm concerned.

I know there is a lot of debate as to whether or not businesses are exploiting young graduates for free labour, and in all honesty that may be true in a lot of cases. But personally for me, the knowledge gained from doing an internship will be well worth working for free, especially considering how hard it is to get a decent paid job straight after graduating these days anyway. Along with that there is the extra mark on my CV which can't really hurt in the long term.

Next summer I'm going to be graduating with a 2.1 in communications with any luck, and even then I know that alone will not be enough to take me places. So I might as well get my foot in the door even if it is at some expense to myself, or is letting myself be (arguably) exploited - which I don't feel is necessarily the case.
