When Skippy and I came back from Morocco, we found that we had lots of pics with aerials visible in them, not intentionally but I quite like them.

Animals can get the equivalent of the Victoria cross. The Dog Handler was telling me that the dogs get the same medical evacuation plan as humans.
Timmy is going to the handlers mum when he retires but toddy goes to doggy heaven because a attack dog cant be sent back into the real world.

that's why i asked if you'd considered writing a book. even though to you it may seem like everyday run of the mill war related shizzle, it's really fascinating to hear first hand what war is really like to us 'normal' folk (excluding those of us on here who aren't exactly normal of course).

I cant go into great detail on what our main job out here is but ill do my best to describe everything else.

What you see in telly is things like Ross Kemp in Afghan and all that, lads fighting the Taliban in fields, wadis and 'The Green Zone'

Up here in Kabul (the capital) its one of the most benign environments to be in as a British soldier.

This doesnt seem like being on 'tour' for me. Iraq was diff, the first night we had rockets fired at us and for the next 3 months it was pretty much everyday. 598 rockets fired at us in 3 months, they agreed a ceasefire in the end.

Onto Afghan-

My job out here is basically a Taxi service to pick up and move people around the City and surrounding areas, we also provide 'Force Protection' for the camp (standing in sangers(concrete watchtowers) with big machine guns for those who dont know). Also a QRF(quick reaction force) that is there if anything 'goes off' and to carry out patrols of the surrounding areas.

The main threat to us is suicide bombers and vehicle suicide bombers, since ive been here (3 weeks) there has been 4 suicide bomber attacks.

The city is divided into 'police districts' we patrol a few of them to provide security and peace of mind for the local population and hand out aid type things to them.

We(The Army) has built Schools, Wells, provided security and helped out the locals with tasks. There are some elements of british forces training the Afghan Army in parts of Kabul.

The HAD(Human Aid Drops) drops are great, we hand out all types of things to the locals to help them about there lives and to make the standard of living a bit better.

You have to take into account that the people in the main part of the city are pretty rich compered to the people near us. They pretty much live in poverty. no running water little or no electricity and use fire to cook/keep warm.

Because of all the help and support the British have given these people, for the first time they have taken us under their Pashtunwali law http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pashtunwali

We have been told to learn a little bit of Dari so we can speak to the people. Its good to now the culture as well so you dont do anything wrong or offend people.

When patroling the kids are always coming up to you asking for money. pens and water. we dont give any to them because before you know it they will be swarming you.

They often come up to chat and some of them speak good English, one kid spoke french to me! We do get the odd glare/stare from a few people but thats natural. I would if i saw a load of people walking around with weapons in my home village.

Along the streets there are open shops/markets selling anything from popcorn to a whole skinned cow on a hook. Lots of people on bikes and horse & carts. The most popular car here is the Toyota Corolla.

Driving into the city is hectic! sometimes bumper to bumper traffic and people dont give a fuck. There is no road laws. When we go in Military vehicles they get out of the way of us but when in armoured civvi trucks they cant tell that we are military and treat us the same and dont care. Its daunting sitting in traffic with people outside who could potentially want to kill you.

The other day the traffic was so bad we had to travel up the wrong way of the dual carriage way.

There is ANP(Afghan National Police) most places and can be helpful in the right situation, sometimes they are pissed/stoned and are of no use to any one.

A lot of other Nations are in the City as well we have Americans, Canadians, French, Macedonian, Italians, Bulgarians to name a few. The British are the only nation to patrol on foot and we have the most respect from the people.

There are some areas that we are not allowed to go into because they are still held bu the Taliban. Thats all im gonna say about that.

They are pumping so much money into some places as well. they are building a massive 'Holiday' type area. They think that Afghan will be some sort of Riviera in the future.

I dont know what else to say really?

any questions you want to ask feel free to and ill try my best to answer them.

ill keep uploading the images as well because actions speak louder than words.

Does Kabul seem like a normal city day-to-day (apart from the military presence)? Or are people always waiting for the next bomb to go off?

Is there still a big risk of kidnapping in the capital? Normal foreigners I mean, I assume you're probably going to be alright!

Interesting stuff in this thread btw  Two Thumbs

Pretty much everyone goes about their lives normally as far as im aware, Ive not been here before so wouldn't know whats normal or not to be honest. from my point of view everything looks 'normal'.

Not sure of a threat of kidnapping, there is a massive security force element out here ranging from Military to ANP(Afghan National Police) and CP(close protection) teams to people who 'guard' places.

You would be stupid to come here without any sort of protection, whether it being body armour and helmet or a CP team. Why anyone would want to come here is beyond me to be honest unless you intend to work which is amazing money by the way. a mate of mine works in a OPs room for a civvi CP company and earns 15 grand a month. and he did the same job i do in the UK.

Ill see if i can find out.

In 2004-08 there was a massive boom in the trade in Iraq and Afghan, lots of soldiers left the army to do it or they got 'pouched' while on tour.
Its died a lot now and in a couple of years the Afghan president is getting rid of all of them because these guys have diff rules of engagement to military and brass the place up a lot.

My mate does the comms side of things.

Its really interesting the perspective you give... photos are very good...

as for the signs... a BELM and  REPOST could be handy Wink

edit:  and a "Parking for Navaho" would be good

I am of the opinion that no genre should contain the prefix 'funky'. The only genre allowed to be 'funky' in any way is funk.  OMG Death Star!!!11
