Right, so just let me get this clear, because I just want to make sure I've got the facts, a riot raged for most of the night, smashing and burning up bits of my neighborhood for the sake of a few crusty squatters and a SHOP!!!

There was not political regime to be crushed, no political prisoners to be freed from torture and execution, no apartheid, no dictatorship to be taken down, no military oppression... a SHOP has opened.

How utterly embarrassing and shameful.

I was really worried that there had been a big shooting or something, couldn't for the life of me fathom why there would be so many police around unless something really, really horrible had happened. Glad it hadn't, but fucking hell, ridiculous.

I don't think it's as cut and dry as that - and the Police were there to evict squatters from a different building that was opposite Tesco - I think the smashing the fuck up of the shop was opportunistic TBH. It sounds like the Police knew exactly what was going to happen and came kitted out for it.

12 riot vans = 1 for every person who actually lived in the squatted building.

From what I have heard, most of the people there had nothing to do with either the eviction or Tesco, they were merely caught up in a Police operation that was happening during the all important Thursday before Easter drinking time. There's a lot of general anger at the moment over the cuts and whathaveyou and I think people were just venting frustration.

To be clear, I wasn't there and the whole operation may have been in response so someone threatening to petrol bomb Tesco for all I know, but it seems highly unlikely to moi.

There were very few "hippies" "crusties" etc there last night.
There were however a large amount of "people from various walks of life".

btw just a little relation to the london riots where they left the police van in the middle of the riot n didnt do anything to stop it, that land rover scene seems eerily similar, where was ANY police, there was fucking loads there that could of prevented it?!

Just very slightly! We even have our own "ammonia filled light bulb" story with the "possible petrol bombs" and the "four injured police officers"

The squat eviction was handled in a pathetic manner. The size of the presence and the length of the road closure was needlessly antagonistic. It should have been done a month ago, before Tesco opened, as this result was entirely predictable.

However.... Those of you calling this a historic event, those of you sympathising with criminal damage, mindless violence and needless rioting outside of family homes, burning out of private property, destruction of cobbles, pavements and public areas. FUCK YOURSELVES.

This rhymes with the 1980s riots. Except they were over a deep-seated drug problem exacerbated by racial inequality, social injustice and institutionalised racism within the police force. Last night was over FUCKING NOTHING. Small minded, pathetic fucking cunts. That goes for those who sympathise as well as those who took part. Yes the police are fucking shits. They beat up my next door neighbour for trying to light a cigarette and stuff like that needs to be dealt with in the harshest possible manner. But at the end of the day this was a riot over a squat eviction and a new fucking shop. Fucking pathetic. I'm lucky I didn't lose my vehicle in this and I depend on that vehicle and can't afford another. I feel deep sympathy for those on Ashley Road who reportedly did lose vehicles and private property.

Gandhi, MLK Jr, Nelson Mandela.... These men led movements to overcome serious political oppression without violence. The guys last night chose to use violence because THEY WANTED IT, over absolutely FUCKING NOTHING. Absolute fucking cunts, them and their sympathisers. Fucking wastemen of the highest order I have ever seen.

i heard it wasn't an eviction. Police had reports of petrol bombs in telepathic heights and apparently there were plans to petrol bomb tesco's . the raid last night was tostop this happening,

no one was evicted as far as i am aware.

The big contradiction for me was the pulling up of cobbles in Picton St. Picton St for me epitomises a lot of what is loved about this area. Despite the poo its quite picturesque and certainly worth protecting. So why did it's self-appointed "protectors" start pulling it apart?

By the way the previous occupants of telepathic heights have nothing to do with the tesco protests

The boys in blue seem to be suggesting otherwise:

Quote
Police seized a number of items –including possible petrol bombs - from the property.

Supt Ian Wylie said: "There have been several significant incidents in this building during the past few days, which have caused serious concerns to police and local residents.

I was in the pub opposite the squat as they evicted it. Never seen such a huge police presence, massively over the top. And it was to evict 4 squatters, who were free to leave on their own, so the talk of petrol bombs being stashed there can't really be true, can it?

If they'd have done this in the middle of the day, or early hours of the morning it would have passed by without any of the damage or violence. Doing it at 9pm on the start of a bank holiday weekend, and have riot police barricade the Stokes Croft / Ashley Road Junction is asking for trouble...

I don't in any way condone any of the damage or violence, and I couldn't care less about the Tesco situation, but think they police have fucked up massively with the timing and manner of their eviction. Muppets!

It wouldn't surprise me if one of those 'suspected' petrol bombers was an undercover police scum bastard, and the best , most logical way to remove said officer is to arrest him or her as a provocateur , this ensures their identity is kept under wraps and allows him or her to infiltrate more activists. I disagree with the police waiting. Its been confirmed (On the news anyway) that the scum bags had petrol bombs. You can't wait in those sorts of situations, actions need to happen fast and hard.

The amount of manpower they had on street is obviously precautionary and to hopefully intimidate anyone thinking of kicking off. You have to remember a lot of the police riot control and order is bred from Thatcher era protests and football hooliganism.

Just because we've gone the best part of 15 years without some proper tear ups and are generally more apathetic (although just as nosey) doesn't mean the police have toned it down as well.

Reports are some police were hurt from missiles including broken teeth etc. Now let me be honest, if someone in a crowd threw a cobble that turned my mates grill into a Witchdoctors necklace, you best believe I'm gonna be cracking some heads. Cracking heads 1950's LA style.

Doh! if you think last night was about one tesco or one squat

Agree with this, along with the general sentiment of the protesting but also agree with people who are pissed off about property damage etc. Where's the supposed 'social consciousness' in these actions? It's got nothing to do with looking out for the area. Obviously the police fuelled it, caused it even, but by dumb actions like ripping up public property and setting fire to stuff and smashing up people's private property they've totally undermined any 'solidarity' thing that people on twitter who don't even live in Bristol seem to be glorifying. How is poisoning people with black burned plastic fumes helping the community? Lol. Although saying that, there are probably all sorts of people taking part in this for different reasons and there'll always b nutters who like smashing everything up for no reason even though one if the main complaints against the council is about when no money gets put into an deprived area to make it look nice.

You really do love your ludicrous conspiracy theories don't you  Laugh
I saw one guy who (to me) was an obvious undercover cop. I followed him for a while watching him taking pictures of people, not pictures of "action" like everyone else.
At various stages of the night I made a deliberate point of saying "undercover cop" within earshot of him and he turned around looking shifty as fuck and a little un-nerved every single time.
There's no doubt in my mind that there was undercover in the crowd.

Not really, reads to me like pretty much everyone involved in the whole palaver (minus those who were truly innocently beaten by the fuzz) were being dicks.  From the videos I've seen this morning, I can conclude that this is the case.

Conclusive proof right there.  If I was wandering about taking pictures and someone shouted undercover cop, I'd probably look around.

There were plenty and they weren't too good about hiding it. Fat, balding guy in an england shirt and shorts in amongst a group of black bloc isn't a good look. I saw him walk over to one of the vans saying 'We need to grab that guy, he ran down that way and is wearing all black.'

If he is an undercover policeman, I'm embarrassed for their fitness requirements.
