So will the PRSC be heading up the clean-up campaign this morning?
Nah, they'll probably start a petition to oust some local councillors for not reacting fast enough to the clean up.

Right, so just let me get this clear, because I just want to make sure I've got the facts, a riot raged for most of the night, smashing and burning up bits of my neighborhood for the sake of a few crusty squatters and a SHOP!!!

There was not political regime to be crushed, no political prisoners to be freed from torture and execution, no apartheid, no dictatorship to be taken down, no military oppression... a SHOP has opened.

How utterly embarrassing and shameful.

Script the police response looks a little heavy handed, but seriously, if they were intending to petrol bomb tescos then I have ZERO sympathy for the squat inhabitants.... strange how the sainsburys went up with barely a fuss!!!

Say what you want about chalkley but he cares deeply about the community and I imagine he feels similar to a lit of us... Anger at BOTH sides of last night's spectacle. He works in positive action, not this sort of nonsense.

this was literally hell on earth, saw it brewing from around 10pm b4 it just got worse and worse, was sketchy at times as well esp when the angry mob seemed to look like a few hundred strong throwing bottles and bricks at the police, getting caught up in the running battles at some moments the feeling of running for your life too.  a few dozen of them managed to push a skip, at pace, as a battering ram to get the riot squad out of the way to clear a path towards tescos, which got a supreme battering.

I've never been Chris Chalkley's biggest fan but basically this. For once Noodlechops you and me think pretty much the same, the Police handled it badly, but for heaven's sake. Whoever, ever thinks that this was justified in anyway, even if you think it was for something bigger than Tescos or the squat, nothing justifies ripping apart the area and I for one am really upset and angry that people think that there is something big enough to warrant this.

I am not Patriotic, I don't believe that you should be proud of random geography, however I do feel really really lucky to live somewhere where we actually have it so good, what the hell are we fighting for. In countries where the government let their children starve, I bet they wouldn't fucking riot over a supermarket being put on their doorstep. Big picture please.

Oh and I resent the term hippy. I thought hippies spread love and peace, not starting fires in the middle of the road.  Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

Saying all this though I think the police are just as to blame, twats the lot of them. There are no winners here, just lots and lots of losers.

if they'd've fucked off earlier it wouldn't have kicked off as bad as it did. seriously if anyone was actually there watching it all develop and then getting caught up in the front lines.. the police were entirely at fault and made things worse pushing it into st pauls. officer blackbeard was going mental at the welsh constabulary for doing so, he is gunna have one long massive headache over the next few months! Brigstocke road/ the top of ashley road is completely trashed, there was no need for them to take it into the residential areas.

the smell of burning rubble and plastic bins, dozens of huge fires everywhere on the roads DID make it feel like hell on Earth at 3 in the morning, with 5 stars on GTA.

Most of the people that I saw there (as well as in pictures and videos) were not hippies or crusties, if I had to chose a label based on an image stereotype, I'd say most of them looked like 'students'.

I was asleep 1am onwards but the mrs watched it all from the yard. She says the number of black masked rioters was too great not to have been organised. The police fucked this, don't get me wrong. But they shouldn't have left any sooner. If anything they should've maintained presence on the opened road after 11pm. Seems to me they knew there was an organized balaclava-fest looming. Afaict they only left at 11pm cos the media showed up, and that was a mistake.

Just to reiterate, the people living inside telepathic heights for the last 9 months had absolutely nothing to do with the tesco protests.

This incident was entirely the fault of the police. Put it this way, if one of your neighbours phoned up and said there were petrol bombs in your house, what would happen?

An armed response unit would show up and raid the place, they certainly wouldn't block off your entire road in all three directions within a 50 metre radius.

I think they did that because they expected trouble.... And lo, trouble happened as soon as the coppers left.

and afterwards all the rioters went home to their middle class homes in Redland/Clifton and St Andrews.......

and how are the police supposed to leave earlier when the crowds were already gathering, at one point the police were all in a line and just targets for people throwing stuff at them.....

I remember the same type of people protesting at Golden Hill when the new tesco store was opening there.... 3 months later the idiots were actually shopping in the place.... its a supermarket, and please tell me where the shops are that will be effected?

dont get me wrong as I dont like the fact that the supermarkets are springing up everywhere... there is one just about to go up in Southmead right next to a bunch of small local shops.... thats something to demonstrate about... but not like a bunch of clowns.

It's contemporary gang warfare and the supermarkets have only got themselves to blame.

The 'Nectar Knights', as they are known, ensured that their new 'Sainsburys local' den opened smoothly, under their protection, a few short months ago, just 400 metres up the road from the site of the club house of their bitter rivals, the 'Clubcard Crew'.

The N.K's fierce loyalty was very evident last night, they don't like other gangs operating on their turf, and it kicked off. Brandishing their loyalty cards, or wearing something orange, with pride, chanting "Try something new today!" whilst hurling 5-pence-off-a-litre petrol bombs.

St pauls ashley road shops is a tense place right now. If the police are trying to stir up trouble in SP their going the right way about it. 3 vans 2 cars and an ambulance, why? because a guy is sleeping by the shop, he is always chilling there or near there. On top of that arresting yutes and stopping kids just to get there details for little to no reason, the day after a riot in the area, yeh great thinking feds. What are they playing at.

There are already 31 branches of Tesco in Bristol, but when this one opened last week, locals staged a peaceful sit-in protest in front of the doors, holding placards and distributing free home-cooked food to passers-by.

Bullshit.

You really do love your ludicrous conspiracy theories don't you  Laugh
I saw one guy who (to me) was an obvious undercover cop. I followed him for a while watching him taking pictures of people, not pictures of "action" like everyone else.
At various stages of the night I made a deliberate point of saying "undercover cop" within earshot of him and he turned around looking shifty as fuck and a little un-nerved every single time.
There's no doubt in my mind that there was undercover in the crowd.
Well that's that then.
Conclusive proof right there.  If I was wandering about taking pictures and someone shouted undercover cop, I'd probably look around.
I never said it was conclusive proof, you're just being a dick.
If the cops DIDN'T have someone in the crowd monitoring the situation from "inside" it would just be slack on their part.
There were probably a few cops knocking about, I saw one, he was obvious as fuck.

ME, goddamit! My taxi was going down Stokes Croft last night at about 1.00am, then all of a sudden it started to kick off and we had to turn around and take a different route - taxi cost about 50% more than it usually would have!  I'M SO ANGRY!

From the BBC

Labour MP for Bristol East Kerry McCarthy visited the scene in the early hours of Friday after reading reports of the disturbances on Twitter.

"I do question why the police op was carried out last night in an area full of bars where a lot of people were out drinking," she said.

'Shoved me'

"It didn't seem to be a particularly sensible time to carry out an eviction of a squat that's been there for a long time."

Ms McCarthy said she had been watching from a empty patch of land.

"Three police officers in riot gear passed us by and one of them shoved me out the way, there was absolutely no reason for that, they could have quite easily walked by.

there were a small minority who were clearly out to cause shit, not on. I might be wrong but I feel that the police realised they had fucked up big time and could not justify such an operation over fuck all especially as they are taking big cuts. At that point the top man ordered them to pull out, they all jumped in their vans and fucked off, This was wehn tescos got fucked over with one unmanned police van outside..im pretty sure they were glad tescos got done in as it made their ridicously over the top presence seem worthwhile

I completely agree. There has to be a legit reason behind the police's motives and movements yesterday.
Of course 160 cops to evict a few squatters is extreme, I'm sure they are aware of that.
They blatantly had information giving them reason to justify why they had to take so many cops there on a bank holiday night.
Do you really think that they're prepared to jeopardize the overall safety of the rest of the city's bank holiday party goers to start a riot.......over fucking tescos!!??
As if the police force thought 'I don't know about you folks, but I'm a bit bored of the normal bank holiday carnage. Lets all evict those squatters and start a riot...it'll be fun! Plus, Tescos said we'll get triple clubcard points if we do'
The rate some people are bollocking on, anyone would think that Tesco is the new Gaddafi for fucks sake. Get a fucking grip!

Anyone who believes the story about the petrol bombs answer me this: where were the fire engines? I saw countless riot vans, ambulances, mounted police officers, etc. but I don't remember seeing a single fire engine. Did anybody else? Imagine if someone had decided in a moment of panic to use one of the alleged petrol bombs, how on earth would the police have put the fire out given that the roads were heavily congested with police vehicles and there was no clear way for fire engines to gain access to the site? It was highly irresponsible of the police force to put members of the public in danger in this way, not to mention their own police officers. If you were involved in an operation involving PETROL would you not want to have the fire brigade present? I would call on the person in charge of this operation to account for this glaringly obvious error of judgement.

So what you're saying, in essence, is "the police were doing their job"

There were two fire engines at the other end of Stokes Croft parked up in the road opposite the Full Moon just after 10pm.  I drove past  them to get home as the other end of Stokes Croft was blocked off.
