I need a new soundcard and keyboard, probably not looking to spend more than 150 in total but could be persuaded...

Requirements - keyboard has to be pretty small and have a mod/pitch wheel - other twiddly things would be good but not essential. Soundcard could do with having a couple of ins and outs, not bothered about too much more as I don't have a desk.

Internal - its for PC use not a laptop. Interface is probably too much money..

hmm i dunno then. never had a desktop music machine. have heard good things about the audiowerk cards, and you can pick them up cheap.

Cheers, I think that I'm gonna get:
http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/Oxygen8-main.html

and either:
http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/Audiophile192-main.html

or
http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/Audiophile2496-main.html

what would I gain getting the 192? Is it just the higher sample rate?

I was gonna reccomend the audiophile 2496 and the oxygen...

I used the 2496 for ages and had absolutly no problems with it, great card and a great price you can pick um up even cheaper if you look around..
edit: also had a very low latency on the audiophile..  Two Thumbs

The oxygen is good, but personally i went for the evolution keyboard of about the same size just becuase i thought the oxygen looks a bit plasticy and toyish, but a mate has had one for ages and not had any problems i dont fink... The only snipe i have about the evo is that it doesnt have a seperate modwheel (modulation is up on the pitch wobble thing)

With regard to the 192, is it just that you get 1/4 inch jack ins/outs rather than phonos built onto the card?!? and like you say higher sample rate, dunno if your concerened about higher sample rates , i record everything at CD quality anyway(44khz 96??), cuz if you want to burn the track onto cd you will have to convert it down from 192 to this rate anyway, and the difference is hardley audible...

Hope this helps

Apparenlty emu do some wicked cheap sound cards.

http://www.etcetera.co.uk/products/EMU005.shtml

In terms of keyboards i have a kontrol 49 which is ace but exspensive.

Looks good, but reading reviews, its actual effective sampling rate is 92 khz so its not too different from the audiophile - and by pedigree I've gone for the 2496 and the oxygen keyboard...

WIthout trying to thread hijack, what would peeps reccomend for a soudcard/interface for laptop?

Got about 100 - 150, happy to go the ebay route to get something better for the cash.

Will be used for (half arsed attempts at) production and a bit of Tracktor/Ableton action.

Looking at stuff like a USB/Firewire m-audio audiophile - seems like it would do what I need and the price is right.

Any good bad experiences with this, advice etc?

I'v e got the M-Audio Duo, which I believe is pretty similar to the Audiophile, save the input/output configurations....
To be honest I never could really tell the difference sonically between it, and the much cheaper edirol 2-in/2 out usb thing... but then the edirol unit didn't have as many ins/outs and as high a sampling rate...
One thing I have noticed tho-the m-audio seems to pick up internal sounds like mouse movement (unlike my shitty but reliable SB AWE-32 card)... and occassionally it comes out with these mad GLITCH sounds...only sporadically, but they don't sound good...
I dunno if that's a software or internal computer issue, but it's off putting..
I bought the m-audio to replace my broken laptop internal s-card, and have now got it connected to my desktop...
Having an external unit (with its own power supply) just feels so cumbersome compared to an internal card tho, so I haven't really given it a good recording workout using cubase yet...
M-audio stuff overall is good an reasoably priced, but it has its detractors...

Having used an M-Audio Firewire 410 since they were released I can personally vouch for it's stability, and it's preamps aren't bad.  I think you could get one off ebay for within your price range.
