Hey all,

I've just finished mixing my first podcast and was wondering if anyone here is really in-the-know about podcasting.

I know that you need a web host & RSS feed for the files, some of which are free but some of which charge. I understand that you get what you pay for, and I was thinking of going with http://libsyn.com/3/?b=1. They charge the equivalent of about £10 per month to upload up to 250Mb per month (which is about 2.5 hours of audio I believe at 192kbps mp3) with basic stats (i.e. who/where my listeners are etc) OR £14 to upload up to 400Mb per month with more advanced stats and some sort of iPhone app (sounds a bit gimmiky perhaps). They also provide the URL and RSS feed. Does this sound reasonable? Also, they are American (charging in dollars) and I am based in London, UK. Does this make any difference? I have a few radio listeners scattered around the globe but my main focus at present is UK, not US.

I understand the concept of using iTunes or equivalent client application to scan your subscribed RSS feeds looking for updates and back-catalogue. However, I have no idea how to promote a podcast. Obviously, I can promote it on forums and through my radio show, but that would make it no different to my radio show, Automate (Weds 7-9 pm at www.intenserecords.co.uk/radio), then uploaded to soundcloud and promoted through my myspace, forums & facebook. I would really like to use the podcast to add a new dimension to my DJ output and increase my number of listeners, rather than just aiming another, identical, stream of drum & bass at the people that already tune into / download my show. Any tips / ideas?

Cheers ;-)

Automate Podcast 005, by Peak, is now available :-D Search for 'AutomAte dnb' in the iTunes store or hit automatednb.podomatic.com.

If it doesn't appear in the store, please try again in 24-48 hours as the store can be a little slow to update. Feed address is http://automatednb.podomatic.com/rss2.xml, if u need it.

Peak has been writing hard dance music under the name Ephexis for over 10 years &  also produces psy under the name Atomic Species. He & partner-in-crime RMS fused  their styles and gave birth to a hard-tripping melt of chunky breakbeats, acidic  twisted elements and dark psychedelic undertones. After a number of successful  gigs, 'RMS & Peak' established themselves as a credible breakbeat act. They now go  from strength to strength, playing festivals and performing full multi-media live  shows as well as releasing through Broken Robot Recordings.

AutomAte Podcast 008 with Nyx (Seattle) is now available Smiley

Search for 'AutomAte dnb' in the iTunes store http://bit.ly/g1MJ9R
or hit www.automatednb.co.uk
Feed address is http://automatednb.podomatic.com/rss2.xml, if u need it.

Regardless of genre or style, rocking a crowd comes naturally to Nyx, along with a love for all that is bass. Seamlessly fast mixing and an energetic stage presence as she rips through flawlessly selected tracks. Since her first gig in '04 she's quickly made a name for herself and become a staple in the Pacific NW Breaks & DnB scene, playing various locations around the States and Canada since. She is the only female resident on c98.5fm (Seattle's only electronic music radio streaming worldwide @ c895worldwide.com) and has landed residencies with Housewreckin', free.BASS (the largest EDM club night in Seattle) and PrissCo out of Salt Lake City, UT. This year is looking to be a big one as she aims for the studio.

Tech:Nology have gone from stength to strength and become a London institution since they were founded in Brixton in 2005. Known for their heavy drum & bass sound, their portfolio includes a long running residency at Plan B, Brixton & yearly birthday bashes at the mighty Scala club in Kings Cross. For a taste of the techy dnb they have become famous for, check out the bi-monthly Temah Sunday sessions at Plan B, Brixton and the new monthly event held on Wednesdays at The Nest, Dalston. For the AutomAte podcast, pocketdred brings a different flavour with this mix of ragga vibes and jungle riddims.

Defazed is a purveyor of the filthiest neuro & tech dnb. He's starting to turn some major heads now and will surely take the neuro world by storm in 2012. Instilled with his unique glitchy style, honed by years of live laptop battling, this podcast is 100% his own work - everything you hear is a Defazed production or remix. Dedicated to the cause, Defazed is also one half of more chilled out songwriting duo Metaphra, a music production teacher and has won two UK laptop battle titles. Phew! Be sure to check out the tracklist (below, and also in the lyrics section of the ID3 tags attached to the mp3 file), pick up the tracks already released on Ammunition Recordings, Nocid Business and Subtek Records and keep your eyes peeled for the EP on Trust In Music later in the year.

AutomAte Podcast 015 with Shuffling Strangefoot :-D

Search for 'AutomAte dnb' in the iTunes store: http://bit.ly/g1MJ9R
or hit www.automatednb.co.uk
or listen / download from soundcloud:
<a href="http://player.soundcloud.com/player.swf?url=http%3A%2F%2Fsoundcloud.com%2Fautomate-dnb%2Fpodcast015" target="_blank">http://player.soundcloud.com/player.swf?url=http%3A%2F%2Fsoundcloud.com%2Fautomate-dnb%2Fpodcast015</a>

Feed address is http://automatednb.podomatic.com/rss2.xml, if u need it.

Shuffling Strangefoot is a producer, DJ & enthusiast of twisted dance music from across the gamut. At 19 years old, he was pummeling punters at local raves, mixing up 45min cavalcades of his own tunes. Fast forward several years, and he has matured and developed a repertoire of dance music that isn’t easily nestled into one genre; or in his own words, "I can't write dubstep for shit."

He's a mix and mastering engineer for his peers, providing sound design, soundtracks & audio post-production for short films and has even found his way onto BBC Radio. Now residing and performing in Brighton, he's also one third of Sshwob, a collective of live improvisers who recently caused a sensation with a live audio/visual remix of the cult film, Koyaanisqatsi.

2012 is going to be a busy one. The first thing to drop will be Defazed's skull-cracking remix of Strangefoot’s ‘Universal Something’ on Trust In Music (the original version can be purchased via the bandcamp link below), and there's plenty more live work, remixes, and releases to follow.

For current releases and free stuff, check out these links:

http://www.soundcloud.com/shufflingstrangefoot/
http://shufflingstrangefoot.bandcamp.com/
https://www.facebook.com/strangefoot

For this mix, Strangefoot pulls out a few recent favourites from a selection of drum & bass, dubstep, crunk and drumstep.

Enjoy Wink

Tom & Stephen (AKA Retraflex) met in Lincoln city through a mutual passion for putting on drum & bass club nights. The label has gained support from the likes of London Elektricity, DJ Marky, Bailey & BCee already and 2012 will see Retraflex take the label and club nights to the next level. Watch this space...

Bio:

Cursa are a new production duo, Tim & Kit; originally from London but currently residing elsewhere. They started making music in 2009 and haven't looked back, developing extremely quickly and displaying real talent. The Starting Points EP, their debut release, was released on Hustle Audio in late 2011. Look forward to releases on Hustle Audio, Crescent, Mirrors Audio and more in 2012, plus the massive Starting Point Remixes EP featuring remixes from Pessimist, Ed:it, Bazil and Trisector & InZtance.

Loose Synths Review:
Cursa make heavily sculpted drum & bass with scary amounts of detail and angular basslines that would make any listener want to stand ears-first in front of a bass woofer. It’s getting harder to grab my attention with Drum & Bass these days but Cursa make it look too easy.

Amoss, a producer/DJ duo from Herefordshire, England. Having met in High School, James and Andy wrote and performed music in bands before discovering electronic music, specifically Drum & Bass.

With their debut release 'Glurg monster' in 2010 on Cyclone Recordings the duo jumped onto the scene in style. Since then they have now moved up the ranks releasing on Renegade Hardware with their track 'Flex' on the Inception EP and most recently teaming up with the Horsemen on the Horsementality LP. They are currently the driving force towards Kent based label Horizons Music with whom they have already released 2 singles and their highly acclaimed 'The Spectrum EP' with many more waiting in the wings for 2012.

Taking inspiration from across the board of Drum & Bass, their style varies through gritty, hard hitting beats and distorted basslines to deep, technical and experimental sound design.

Support from Spectrasoul, Doc Scott, Ant TC1, Ulterior Motive, Need For Mirrors, the list goes on. Enjoy Wink

Deviant Nature A.K.A Jay O'Sullivan started writing electronic music toward the end of the 90's. It was an inevitable progression, he'd always been in love with music, and had been buying and mixing records since 1996. Jay's interest in creative expression has been the catalyst for numerous projects, gigs and collaborations across several genres and aliases. For his Deviant Nature persona, the main focus is the the darker realms of drum n bass: a tapestry of powerful beats, nasty basslines, rib-rattling subs, brain tweaking synths and a certain twisted funk that makes you want to simultaneously smile and grimace. Bass Face!

Resident with Sub:Bass:Invaders and owner of Blackbelt Recordings, Deviant Nature is also currently working with This Chris, together forming Smash Syndicate. Current & future projects include DnB, drumstep and fresh dubstep material including collaborations with vocalists & other musicians. Lots of exciting stuff in the pipeline from both Smash Syndicate & Deviant Nature in the near future.

Check out http://soundcloud.com/deviantnature for new music and the Blackbelt podcast at http://www.blackbeltrecordings.co.uk/#/Podcasts
