i got a macbook pro quite old now, 2.16 ghz 2gb ram running 10.4.11 and recently it keeps closing programs and doing the mac equivilant of the windows blue screen of death.
There were disk errors and i have since reinstalled the OS and repaired the disks and stil the same problems are happening.
Got a few bookings coming up and currently don't trust my laptop and can't afford a new one for shit.
anyone had similar problems?

that's really odd that it carries on doing it after reinstalled OS. It seems like a software issue but apparantly not. I've never had any major issues with macs so far. I have one a similar age and still seems solid. I'm no expert on these things, but there might be some weird hardware reset that you can do that might help. something like this... http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379?viewlocale=en_US |

i ran 'rember' which is RAM testing software and i have a fault - it can't tell me on which stick it is though. Need to get a smaller screwdriver to remove each one separately and run the test again and find out which gb stick is buggered. i can run ableton off 1gb for the moment but sounds like i may have to pay macs ridiculous prices to replace the damage hardware.

i think memory is pretty cheap if that's the only thing you need to replace. it shouldn't be too hard a thing to replace yourself but definitely be careful (anti-static precautions are advisable).
It might be cheaper to buy 2 new whole gigs from an indepedant company the 1 new official one.
maybe it's worth doing that ram reset? it's not something I know anything about tho. there'll be some genius geek you can find thru google tho.

If you know the ram is faulty I'd recommend replacing both sticks with a matched pair from http://www.crucial.com/uk/If you use their Memory advisor/finder thing they will guarentee compatibility. Loads of people I know have used them for Mac memory with no problems at all. |

+1 for the handy Crucial site...whilst you're at it why not whack in X2 2GB sticks (assuming it can handle it), seems daft not to it's peanuts for what you'll gain in performance! Mash  |

before you do anything i'd get a can of compressed air from maplin and make sure its not dust causing somehting to overheat.

cheers for advice guys - it is a faulty RAM chip. I've taken out the second chip and run RAM tester again and its given me the OK. running it again now with the bad chip and will see what happens. Replacing both sounds like a good idea however the 40p i have to live on at the moment ain't quite gonna stretch! come end of the month i will sort something out. Just wanna get it running for few sets got coming up. Seems to be going fine now not sure if my mac will take 4gb does anyone know how i can find out? As for dust - yes this is probably worth while doing so anyway but its not running particular hot (pros bake anyway) (sorry i should have quoted in this reply - oops ) |

As for dust - yes this is probably worth while doing so anyway but its not running particular hot (pros bake anyway) If the Crucial website shows up 4GB packs after searching your Mac think that's a pretty sure sign it'll work. A quick dust wouldn't do any harm either, I recently took a lappy apart bit by bit and gave it the paint brush/hoover treatment because it was running increasingly hot/slow and worked a treat! Mash
