I did a session with ProTools HD on Saturday for the first time in years and now when I open Cubase it makes me want to throw my computer into a skip and piss on it. Does anybody want to give me ten grand?

Failing that, what do folk think of ProTools LE these days? I'm looking at a 003+ and at a stretch (and if I sell some stuff. And maybe my body) I might be able to afford it. There's some annoying things (like no delay compensation  Doh! ) but I don't know much about the other differences between HD & LE, except for the price. Which is just mental. Anyone have any wise words*?

I considered looking at old-school PCI cards and some 888/24 interfaces but afaik you can't run the newest version of the HD software on a 888 rig so I'm undecided. Spending 4 figures and missing out on Beat Detective HD would be saddening.  Undecided

http://www.avid.com/US/products/Pro-Tools-HD-native Coming soon. Will still be very expensive, but should be less than the current HD rig. The extras will make it pretty expensive though, but it may mean more HD rigs are sold off.

If they bring out a 2x2 monitoring rack thats cheaper than the current HD racks then that'd be a very tasty option. No more exporting stems at the end of a session, I'd just have to bring the whole project back to my place on a USB drive and open it up. It'd be a shame not to have TDM but as a compromise this looks like the one. Any idea on price yet?

http://www.kvraudio.com/news.php?id=15142 This says $3,495 for the card or $5,995 for the card plus an OMNI I/O. As I said, still not cheap.

Its not cheap, but comparatively it is. It sits in the gap between high-end LE (003+) and low-end HD (Core 1), and obviously the main attraction is full compatability with HD project files which could make it worth the extra cash. On the other hand the 003+ has a lot more I/O and could actually be put to profitable location recording use fairly quickly, whereas the Native HD does seem like a bit of an expensive bedroom toy.  Undecided

It all depends on what you are doing. If you have a commercial studio, then it's not that much money, providing you have regular work coming in. If you are a bedroom producer with no money coming in, then its an expensive toy, but if you can afford it then go ahead!

Well I don't have a studio yet.... But the more I think about it the 003+ would be a good purchase to start building up a location recording business, and spending over a grand is a lot more justifiable if it pays for itself eventually. Hmmmm. To the chamber of contemplation!

This thread makes some good points regarding PT HD Native.  The SOS review is happening in a friends studio and everything sounds really encouraging!  IMO PT LE is largely useless - yes it looks like the real thing but so many of the features that make HD so popular just aren't there.  I don't personally need PT HD as my mixers/studios have all that stuff but have considered picking up a HD3/4 in the past for when I need to import/export the odd thing from my writing rig, but couldn't really justify it for something I could do without - but PT HD Native could be just the ticket, as I'm sure it could be for many others.

I was in a band some years back and we sold a song to be used in demo's and got paid with 20 grands worth of Pro Tools gear (at cost). I think I was the only one in the band at the time wondering why the fuck we didn't take the 20 G. In fact I still don't think I'd spend that.

Frankly I'd rather eat my own shite. If I was born in the era of tape I wouldn't have gone into using equipment, I'd have dedicated my life to helping invent ProTools.
