Im fairly new to sx3 and i cant work out how i create a side chain fir my bass and drums.

i have found things on other forums but i don't have the technical knowledge that they assume i have.
i have been using live7 till now and its well easy on there but i don't understand the send returns on cubase Huh
can anyone help me through it?

can i be done on 3? Think its only from 4 onwards. that or you need to get the latest update tho quite sure it only came in on 4.

you can get sidechain VSTs tho which do work but take a bit of thinking to get right - can't remember the name of the one i used to use.

It's not directly possible in SX3 and a workaround is required. I've not tried it, but the videos below should show how it is done, but I've not checked them as youtube is blocked at work.

http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=72851 This refers to SX2, but it should be the same concept in SX3.

For the record I wouldn't sidechain bass and drums, I'd spike the EQ on the kick at the presence point, make room for it by taking a notch out of the bass then compress them together in a group. But the long-winded Surround Sound Group thing on KVR would be the only way to do a true stereo sidechain.

its not at all intuitive in 4 or 5 to be honest! Logic definitely has its strong points over Cubase in that area!

download the mono sidechain compressor for free.  google it and it comes up pretty high in the results.  its a red one.

create a duplicate of your kick track(or whatever you want to use as the trigger) and create a group audio track (stereo).

now...

send the main output of your bass track(the one you want to compress) and your kick duplicate(your trigger) tracks to the group channel.
put the sidechain compressor onto your group channel.
solo your group track so you are only dealing with the bass, kick and group track.  press play so you hear the bass and the kick duplicate playing through the group channel.
now use the pan(on the mixer) to pan your kick duplicate track to the far left or far right(until you no longer hear the kick).
do the same for the bass track so the pan for the bass track is .the opposite of whatever your kick dupliacte is( so if kick dupliacte is left, set the bass to panned full right)

the sidechain compressor uses one side as its trigger and the other side as its signal.

hope this helps

FYI for the above to save you making a duplicate of the control channel you can do a post-fader send then in the track automation you can independently pan that send to the right place. That way if you make any changes to the kick channel later they're automatically reflected at the control input.  Two Thumbs
