I'm looking to make some quite deep and boomy sub-basses (kinda dubstep style) and I was just wondering if anyone had any recommendations for soft synths or techniques to try to make them nice and fat. Anyone?

i'm quite into the detuned sinewave thing. maybe like 3 sinewaves detuned by about 3 hertz off each other. or maybe variable detune (with an envelope over the detune width or something)

I always use a really simple soft synth (when not using the novation bass station) that's native to Nuendo called the A1. Two oscillators usually hammering out a sine wave and a triangle wave an octave lower, then a 24db low pass around 150/180 hz. LFO'd to taste Cheesy
Passed through a couple of effects for some subtle harmonic excitement (ie: bbe sonic maximiser).
Re EQ'd.
Then ramped through the waves C1 compressor and tada!
Booming bone rattling sub bass!  Slayer
