64 bit DAW (Digital audio workstation)

Hello hijackers, here's my question:

In general, whatever software we consider, if you get the 64 bit version, run it on an 64 bit OS and on a 64 bit CPU, you'll get far more performance than 32 bit systems. First of all because you can use tons of RAM, secondly because it's like about exploiting the full power of an engine. So basically I've got a PC with an Intel Core 2 Duo P8600 (that it's a 64 bit CPU like most of the recent ones) and I was in doubt whether to buy Windows 7 64bit or not. I mean, if it's possible to get a 64 bit DAW easily (don't care if Ableton, FL, Reason or whatever) that works nicely and has been tested, the OS upgrade it's actually worthwhile. Otherwise I might wait to buy the new Windows until I'll know that there is a cool 64 bit version of a DAW.

Is there any of you that actually thought about this problem yet? Does someone know how's the 64 bit DAW situation atm?

most music software doesn't utilise 64 bit yet. Infact some plugins don't work well on 64 bit (i.e Sonnox EQ 64 some say, though i've not had a problem)

RAM usage won't change between 32 bit or 64 as the host DAW won't have the ability to utilise it (i think correct me if i'm wrong.)
So to answer your question I think windows 7 is more likely to have if anything, an ill effect on your current software.

Logic 9.1 runs 64bit now i have just read tho.

Yep I could easily imagine that Apple was quite ahead, but switching over a mac it's not a valid option for me atm

Works really well, so much better with memory hungry VST's/samples. Can have omnishpere/Trillion/Massive etc all open in the same project with no problems, where with 32bit cubase, lots of issues.

The main issue you will have is using older VST's as they will only be in 32bit. But I have got round this by using a handy program called JBRIDGE(only cost around £10). Jbridge will convert 32bit VST's for you so they work with a 64bit VST host.

I think there is only a couple of really old VST's which I haven't got to work properly with this. But they are 7 ish years old.

Ive got Win7x64 and run about every DAW you can imagine on it with no problems... whilst next to none of them are x64 programs all the most recent version releases are now at least x64 compatible, meaning they wont catastrophically fail whilst running on a x64 machine, but they still wont utilise the added benefits that comes with 64 bit computing. Which DAW's are you going to be using the most?
