So, I have to record a handful of tracks, and the studio I've been using, isn't doing it for me. So, I would like to know what studios people could recommend? Just need to spend a few hours once the space is set up, to sing it out, and I can process edit anything myself after.

Any recommendations from those who have used studios here (with a vocal booth especially) appreciated. Prices would be good to know too.

Thanks guys!

you can hire the ones at uwe and the uni if you like, uwe has better mics i think, u87's etc, doubt it'd cost you much, would be free if you got a job there Smiley

The results coming out of Attic Attack have pleased me. I've never been down there myself but the guys liked it and the material that I got for mixing/post was really nicely recorded. 150 a day, iirc.

Also, my place.  Wink Its pretty basic (vocal booth with Rode mic & video link to control room, MSP5/Cubase control room, valve pre-amp for mic). I'll do the first track free then we can work out a fair rate if you like the results. PM I up.

@Bloke: UWE goes out at 5p/h for current students on the relevant courses, 15p/h for other current students and 30p/h for commercial work. At those rates it is a fucking rip off in relative terms, and also very heavily booked since they increased student intake.

do you work there? What faculty?
I work there now, lecturing first year students a bit.

UWE don't charge anything for current students in the faculty to hire the studio (though do if it is commercial work, just don't tell them) If you know someone you can get in, especially this time of year before major assignments are on. They are also building 2 new studios both with big audient desks and i imagine will be fairly nice. Issue with UWE is mic cables, stands, faders ect are ragged and the recording rooms sound pretty shit, though one of the studios is attached to a dead room which is good for vocal over-duvbs and foley.

I found using UWE was a long annoying process of finding what i want, working out was was broken and having to set up the desk everytime because people unplug things at random with no idea what they are doing, however they do have a nice desk, really nice monitors and a fairly well treated control room.

Sure there are better places..

no, i was using the Muse studio with a friend who works there for a bit, we never really had any major issues though, was fairly hassle-free...

that said we weren't mixing on the desk, just using a few channels at a time as inputs and monitoring through it... recorded some nice vocals there though...

Only been here a couple of times, one time fairly unimpressed the other time was really dissappointing - shame as this place used to have a good rep.  Cheap as chips as you'd expect though,

That's interesting. I know people are generally really happy. Big Joan have just done another stint in there and the rough mixes are sounding fabulous. Esp' the drums. I wouldn't say it was cheap either actually!
Were you an full band or something else?

I've never been to Toybox but this year I mixed a fairly large project for which all drums and acoustic guitars were tracked down there and I have to say I was more than pleased with the results. As per usual I don't care if it was achieved using headphones plugged into mic sockets as long as it sounds good and it certainly sounded good.  Two Thumbs

I think I must have just been a bit unlucky, recordings were very simple - standard rock band setup both times.  The lack of a proper 'live' room isn't ideal but more than enough for demo recordings, their drum kit/amps were surprisingly usable and the desk's cool.

I have to say that I was quite disappointed when I recorded there. Although of course it was cheap, so I couldn't really complain.

From my experience, Jim Barr's studio (J&J) has achieved the best vocal recordings - really stunning. He uses Logic, which of course some people sniff at, but the equipment was lush and he has a real expertise. prices are about 400 a day though. For slightly cheaper option I'd recommend Wilding Studios (in the same building as J&J), although I've never actually recorded there. But he mastered my album and I can assure you he knows his onions, and will be really helpful.
I also highly recommend Vee Kay from on here - he has a lot of experience, and although his studio is a home setup, he has a great ear and has recorded and produced vocals for a number of top UK artists. And he'd be the cheapest option. I'm sure Noodle is great too, but I can't say from experience

Doh! Totally forgot about this. My place is off the menu these dayss as my flatmate has had his kid staying over a lot more and he's using my vocal booth to store a load of kid-related crap.

(cue pedo-dungeon jokes).
