2  General / The Forum / Re: Council marking people's posters.... on: November 11, 2011, 04:42:19
I spoke to the council a week or so ago, they are writing numbers on them so when they take a picture they can write down where that poster is so they can tell the club who will then ask the promoter to take it down. If its not taken down a order will be served and fines will commence. Simple as that.

I mentioned that myself and that many other promoters and club owners attended a meeting a few years ago with the council, destination Bristol and police to look at legal sites, locations for the sites were suggested and it was looking like it was progressing. The person dealing with it was made redundant and it was thought that there was no one way thinking between the dept proposing the legal flyposter sites and planning dept, so its a no go.
We had suggested at that meeting that there was the potential for money raised from Unity would go towards this process, good job we didnt.

And did the council have any reply to that?? At all!?! I was pretty heavily involved with calls and letters to the council (including the lady who was made redundant), organising maps for good poster sites and the meeting at Basement 45 but have since been so pissed off with them making that contact redundant and not following up on any of the issues generated that haven't calmed down to sort it out and have now moved to Sydney... I REALLY hope some of you guys can take up the reigns and get something workable happening...

As 'promoter of Bristol' and having worked out that Bristol's USP is culture I think he could be a help and worth approaching about it.

There have been repeated attempts at getting legal poster spots up, all have failed as mentioned before, but I don't think we should stop campaigning for them. Its on the agenda for the next Bristol Music Industry Network meeting (7th Dec, 12:30 Colston Hall - come!) so we can start campaigning the council with a unified voice again.

The council often manage to find pots of budget for projects, especially those they feel could be cost neutral (i.e. cost savings on clearing up illegal posters) so i don't believe its unfeasible.

I would love to hear how you do with this Poppy  -  keep me posted if there's anything I can do from this side of the world...

On a plus note Bristol Uni has made a couple of legal poster frames on the red boarding outside the ASS library and hopefully they can be pressured to add some more around campus  -  could UWE do this too?

Mainly it's so frustrating that the council spends sooo much money hiring people to 'sort out the poster problems' and fine people etc when all it would really take is a couple of grand to put up some legal spaces!!!   I'M SO ANGRY!

those Kam Cases aren't too bad actually, but the swan ones are a better build and you can pick your colour or go for stucco silver so they don't wear out or get scratched...

35  General / The Forum / Re: Apple holding more cash than USA on: August 03, 2011, 17:55:44
@benofacial.
always makes me smile when you talk about these big players and say, yeah he's an expert, but his knowledge is a bit flimsy here and there.
so im interested to hear what would be your bullet point list, to solve the financial woes of the world, would be?

There isn't one, there are catastrophic problems in the derivatives industry, and the unavoidable contraction of economic activity following peak oil can't be easily solved or managed, but many or most of the problems attributed to debt based money are actually fairly easy to solve.

In bullet points the solutions are.

"Make banks ask our permission before they lend our money" - moves the burden of risk on to the depositor and away from the taxpayer, seperates bank deposits into deposits and money that has been lent, meaning no duplicate claims and no bank runs - "oh you want your money out, well you can have 300 of your 1000, you asked us to invest 70% of it because you wanted to earn interest."

"Return the power to create money to an independent agent of the state" - Give the power to create money to an independent body such as the Monetary Policy Committee, who then raise and lower the money supply to keep with targetting zero or low inflation, depending on the views of the government at the time, crucially, there has to be no interference from government to prevent "economic electioneering", we're still debating the best system of checks and balances for this, but with a transparent money creation mechanism it won't be hard for the public to just look at a balance sheet and see when the system is abused.

What can't really be bullet pointed is the transition between the current system and the new one, which we're still developing but will probably involve creating and lending the banks the quantity of money they need to become solvent and to comply with the new legislation and actually hold enough to meet their liabilities (all loans must be funded from deposits and no deposits can be available for transactions and on loan simultaneously), and then them paying it back over time and it being destroyed to avoid it ever circulating and causing inflation.

Download our submission to the Independent Commision on Banking from the Positive Money site (it's about 30 pages) or read the "our proposals" section, or if you want the real deal, read the actual legal text we've developed here They aren't neccessarily all "our" ideas, the essential heart of it is based on Irving Fishers "100% Money" but updated for the modern age. We work on the proposals with nef and the head of the finance and banking school at Southampton University, Richard Werner.

As I said, I'm not knocking Bill's knowledge of monetary history because he is excellent and very well respected, but when it comes to economics he isn't trained and hasn't gone into as much detail as we have working on the economic problems and the nature of the various solutions floating around.

Wow... what a witty comeback....  Undecided
