It's confusing marketing dreamt up by me in a spate of "Yeah! Let's do a dieselpunk theme!" and getting a little lost in it...

Thanks all, have passed on the address of this thread, so it's in Gabi's hands now - knew there'd be a good lead here!
6  General / The Forum / Re: Anyone fancy DJing electro swing in Poland? 1st Dec on: October 30, 2012, 16:44:43
Sorry Chris!

She is able to pay for flights and accommodation plus a small fee for the actual DJing itself - but from the UK or closer rather than from the US.
7  General / The Forum / Anyone fancy DJing electro swing in Poland? 1st Dec on: October 30, 2012, 14:37:05
So, one of my lindy hop newbies in Bristol is from Poland and is keen to help expand the scene, I think she's in contact with Dragon Swing but not sure how much joy she's getting. Anyway, I got this message today:

Hello Sara, i hope that you are ok. I have a problem with my artist ( Elektro swing dj) he disappeared. He didn't responded for my emails etc. He didn't sign the contract. And I need to find someone that could cover him during my small event in Cracow  ( 1.12.2012) could you help me to find good Elektro swing DJ? I ve just asked because you know someone.... Is really difficult to give up whole idea.then most things are ready for adwertisment. Let me know if you know anyone. I will be greatful. Take care Gabi

Anyone interested or know someone who might be? Have already messaged a friend of mine in Bristol who specialises in electroswing but that isn't much to go on...

Cheers!

Sara

9  General / The Forum / Gratuitous plug for Bristol swing dance explosion! on: August 14, 2012, 22:02:32
Yooooo!

So, like, we're exploding. This thing is getting bigger and bigger, we'll probably outgrow our main venue soon (Weds nights, South Bank, Dean Lane in Southville)...

Anyway, if you fancy having a go at this swing thing, there are LOADS of newbies right now so you can all grow up together and enjoy the camaraderie of communal crapness  Two Thumbs

There are beginners classes now in Southville, Easton and on Gloucester Road, see the respective link below:

Bring it! Swing out!

Eyup, who's going?

Got a spare ticket here too, though I think it's based on one barcode so you'd have to come in with me, right?

Got a few swing dancers going to be there for sure Smiley
11  General / The Forum / Re: Minirig portable speakers on: May 31, 2012, 22:43:20
Sweet, let's do it Smiley

I picked up 3 at the same time - the other two were ordered by my mate David. I don't suppose he'd notice if we, er, just take a look at them... I've resisted temptation thus far!

13  General / The Forum / Re: Minirig portable speakers on: May 31, 2012, 13:26:50
Am too impatient to wait!

Well can't get hold of him today, so won't be able to get my hands on it for a while now presuming he won't be available over bank hol weekend! Just wants it, preciousss!
14  General / The Forum / Re: Minirig portable speakers on: May 31, 2012, 12:30:32
So Dave said by email I could go pick the one I ordered off Amazon this afternoon but didn't give me a place to go! Could anyone PM me where he's based/builds the things?

Cheers,
Sara

Oh by the way - are they 15W peak or RMS?
18  General / The Forum / Re: Minirig portable speakers on: May 24, 2012, 22:46:31
I definitely want one - going to be doing short lindy taster classes soon in a venue that has a sound system - that's controllable only from the office. Doh. Not great when you need to keep stopping and starting the music! So I think this is the next best thing Smiley

To be fair, this is only about an academic and philosophical think tank, I actually read the journal and they make it clear throughout that they are debating it from the most hypothetical stance and has in fact been a subject that philosophers have debated for centuries, but has yet to be debated since legalized abortion. If you read the comments on there you would think that the government wanted to bring in infantcide from next week.

Should Killing newborn babies should be allowed? Absolutely not.

Should debating the ethics in an academic environment be allowed? Yes

I'm amazed at how outraged the internet at large is getting about this - has no one heard of a debate, or playing devil's advocate?

Truffle - ahhh, that's indeed one of the most impressive videos - always loved how crazy and random it looks until they manage to dance in unison towards the end. That dancing group is called Whitey's Lindy Hoppers, they were amongst the inventors of the dance in the Savoy ballroom in Harlem in the 30s and started to perform for big Hollywood movies (though still being treated like 2nd class citizens, being black and all). The musicians to begin with are Slim and Slam.

Sorry, it's early and I felt like convincing myself that I know something!

Used to love DI, forgot to keep checking it as the new posts slowed down (as usual, blog is interesting, blog gets big readership, blog concentrates on putting out book, blog falls apart), bit it appears they're picking up again, nice!

The ones I always loved were articles about weird mental problems, or just crazy stuff the brain does - like Chuck Bonnet syndrome: http://www.damninteresting.com/chuck-bonnet-and-the-hallucinations/
36  General / The Forum / Re: Lindy-hop on: October 23, 2011, 14:11:18
I don't go anymore because I'm rubbish though.  Tomato Bad Teeth

Also, Sara "Sarajoy" on here, is really nice, and very knowledgable and amazing at lindyhop Smiley

Duder/dudette I was rubbish for ages before I got to what you reckon is amazing! It's all about muscle-memory, after a while your feet just hang on in there and you get more freedom to play - go back! Go! I Order You!

JDO it's more difficult when drunk, like, but go for it Smiley

Charlie did you go? Baker Boys were playing, a nice enough band but they're a bit twiddly/long-playing for dancers. David must be mates with them, as he keeps booking them, and they don't seem to take the feedback... Other bands we've had have been brilliant though!

I thought I may as well paste in what I sent to Spalding in case it's of use to anyone else:

"Totally! Two local options currently, Swing Dance Bristol or Hoppin' Mad (which from the thread it seems like you go to already), websites are here: http://www.hoppinmad.co.uk/ and http://www.swingdancebristol.com/ - they do 8-week beginner's courses, sadly the current one has started and is already fully booked.

BUT I'd suggest carrying on with Graeme and Ann at HM in the side-hall, going to the Wednesday night Ain't Misbehavin' dances (they are aces, I should be DJing at the next one unless David's forgotten, the atmosphere is friendly++), and maybe signing up to SDB's next beginner's intensive weekender (26/7 Nov) - you're basically up and dancing comfortably socially after doing it! If you're happy at 'improver' level (post-beginner) then SDB run those on Thursday nights at 7pm."

Jeez-louise I've not been to this forum in ages - how is everyone?

Hahaha - ace then, cheers!

Just had Trewhella on the phone, we are coming to an agreement, presuming the guy running the show isn't going to just decide to do it all himself...!
39  General / The Forum / Re: NYE swing dance at Living Room - I need Electro Swing advice!! on: December 21, 2010, 16:11:21
Sweet thanks!

It's all so bloody last-minute, grr.

Yeah in contact with Trew - he doesn't know I might be calling upon some help from him though!!

A couple of things...
1) Is it legal to like, just play good electroswing tracks from bands (i.e. correspondents) and not worry too much about getting it mixed - or is that just, you know - a bit crap?
2) Would it be really rude to use mixes from other people, and just play them? Of course we'd credit them somehow (or at least tell anyone who asks or tells us they like it)..?

Bit of a n00b, me.
40  General / The Forum / NYE swing dance at Living Room - I need Electro Swing advice!! on: December 21, 2010, 15:53:21
Hiya all,

The guy organising our do over at the Living Room has advertised the night as having "mostly electro swing from 1am".

He's a good mate - but he does seem to fly by the seat of his pants. I've just asked him what he's got planned with regards this electro swing bit (seeing as he usually DJs for swing and blues dancers - and we like gaps between our tunes), and he came up with this:

Quote
Am thinking that I don't really want a full-on electro swing DJ. Want to keep a balance of music that will satisfy both dancers and normal punters (impossible task!) and think i may be better doing that myself with a little bit of help from somoeone lese who understands the two crowds, i.e. you.

....shit.  Smashed It's going to be rubbish unless I get some good advice in here. He's smart enough to realise it'll be pretty impossible to please both crowds at once, but it looks like he's going to try it on anyway.

My question dear Hijackers - is what the fuck would you do?

I can't mix. I certainly don't have any decent body of electro-swing to hand.  Arrrggghhhhhh.   Undecided

http://www.sandisk.com/products/sansa-music-and-video-players/sandisk-sansa-clip-mp3-players.aspx

sansa clip is excellent if you want a cheap one. Is small, light, drag and drop, good battery power, generic usb and has a slot for micro sd card

This. They're getting rave reviews online, particularly the new Clip+ with the aforementioned slot for uSD and improved clip - PLUS folder/file browsing as well as via ID3 tags.

Also, if you don't need much space, I got one of the 1gig original Clip players online for £12 delivered (eBay). Proper good for running etc. Tiny wee thing.

It, erm, made me a bit dry. You might need to start buying lube if you don't already. Otherwise I'm not sure it had much of an effect on libido - apart from the spotting putting me off (was like a period was trying to get through but just wasn't allowed to get going).

I went on the contraceptive injection but I found I was 'spotting' for the best part of each quarter (once every 3 months, innit?).

I seem to be pretty sensitive to the levels of hormone - like if you miss a pill or two mid-packet it's supposed to not be a problem, but it does mean my period comes on early, or I 'spot' all the way to the break between packets. Nice.

With regards missing a pill now and again, this may put your mind at ease:

I'm sure the no Tesco lot would know which agents dealt with the planning applications.

Here we go, and here's the dates of the notices to the public and neighbours - in October and November last year: http://e2eweb.bristol.gov.uk/PublicAccess/tdc/DcApplication/application_detailview.aspx?keyval=KQSHOXDNK8000&searchtype=PROPERTY&module=P3

Too late! Too late! Well done for staging a nice bit of protest theatre, but it's just-too-late.
