Jonwayne
Jonwayne came onto the Los Angeles music scene by way of the east Los Angeles club Low End Theory circa 2008-09, then emerging as the epicenter of a new generation of hip-hop beat makers: Flying Lotus, Gaslamp Killer, Nosaj Thing, Kutmah, Daedelus. Fresh out of high school, Jonwayne jumped in with homemade rap mixtapes and immersed himself in the scene. 'It felt like a golden age,' he says, 'it was very inspiring.'
He first became known as a producer, releasing the instrumental album Bowser (2011) but it was his over-sized skill on the mic that caught the attention of Stones Throw's Peanut Butter Wolf, who signed him to record an album as an MC.
As Jon set to work on his debut rap project, he let his presence be known with a series of tapes: Cassette, Cassette 2 and Cassette 3. Each was unplanned, the releases prompted by Jon's prolific output. And by this time even lawyers for the tobacco conglomerate Phillip Morris took notice of Jonwayne, serving him with a cease & desist notice for a cassette that looked like a pack of Marlboros.
Jon Wayne is the MC/producer's birth name. The Hollywood cowboy, John Wayne (real name Marion Morrison) took his famous screen name from Jonwayne's great-great-great-great-great uncle, General'Mad Anthony' Wayne, a player in the American Revolutionary War. True story. Now Jonwayne's taking back the name what goes around comes around.

MO KOLOURS
Mo Kolours is a half-Mauritian, half-English producer, singer and percussionist. On his self-titled debut album he displays dazzling inventiveness and joyous spirit – unsurprising for someone raised on the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Lee Perry and A Tribe Called Quest while remaining ever curious about his Indian Ocean roots.

The album Mo Kolours follows a trilogy of EPs for One-Handed Music that mixed soul, dub, hip-hop, various electronic styles and the Sega music native to Mauritius. Recognising Mo’s singular voice Gilles Peterson invited him to Maida Vale Studios to record a live session for the BBC before his first EP had even hit the shelves. Now Mo counts the likes of Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard and Friendly Fires’ Jack Savidge among his fans.

There’s an exotic appeal to Mo Kolours and his music but there’s also something very British about this record. Mo Kolours follows in the footsteps of UK artists who have synthesised a variety of imported styles and added the indelible stamp of our rainy island, from The Specials and Cymande (who receive a tribute here in the form of Mike Black) to Massive Attack and Mala. His humour reveals an idiosyncratic Britishness too, as when he shouts out forgotten budget rides such as the Datsun Sunny on Play It Loud (In Your Car) or titles his ominous environmental warning Natural Disasters Wish List.

There’s plenty of seriousness here though, from his reimagining of dance music on Afro Quarters to his remarkable rhythmic production prowess: witness the irresistible funk of Say Word or the nagging steel drum hook on lead single and live favourite Little Brown Dog.

This album introduces a generous and endlessly creative talent to the world at large. And, as with his mesmerising live show, Mo Kolours doesn’t just give us a glimpse of the path less travelled but also offers us the fruits of his labours along the way.
3  General / The Forum / Re: Steven Segal appreciation thread on: March 17, 2014, 17:58:54
Steven Seagal is to play live across Europe with his Blues Band through June and July 2014. Sombody book him please!

info:
It is surprising to find out that Steven has been a musician a lot longer than an actor - BB King is quoted as saying "Steven is great at guitar."
Steven has honed his craft over the years sharing his love for the blues and jamming with the most prolific blues legends in the industry. BB King, Bo Diddley, John Lee Hooker and his greatest influence, Clarence 'Gatemouth' Brown are all among those who Steven has jammed with and also shares a common bond - the blues.
A blues purist, Steven Seagal will perform live across Europe with his Blues Band over the summer

Printer's Devil
-------------
Also known as Monkey Moo, DJ / producer / beat boxer of Bristol's very own Aspects crew. Fresh off releasing Aspects' third studio album, Left Hand Path, Printer's Devil has recently put together a new mix tape, Kings' English, which has been getting big responses around the world including shouts from BrooklynRadio.

"Kings' English is the pure cut'n'paste spirit of Hip Hop fused with the DNA of garage rock. Trapped under reels of mis-spliced tape and tangled cables, Printer's Devil plundered, without remorse, a path from Bowie via Arcade Fire while stealing Afrika Bambaataa's perfect beat on the way. Hosted from the belly of a decommissioned Russian sub, on three busted handheld mics and a Roland Space echo, this Pirate's travelogue is a treasure chest of pilfered funk and unlicensed soul."

I've used KLM a few times... They fly from Bristol to Amsterdam so you can cut out the travel to/from Heathrow (if you're Bristol based).

I'd definitely recommend Kyoto - such a beautiful place. Also Hiroshima is cool  Two Thumbs

Went for three weeks a few years ago. Week in Tokyo and two weeks in the countryside at the glacial lakes on the foothills of mt Fuji. Cuffing beautiful. Tokyo is expensive though, you'll prob wanna budget for around a hundred quid a day and that's being thrifty!! Check out the studio Ghibli museum while you can Cheesy I would go back there in a flash still LIGHTAH!

Yeah I'd recommend a week in Tokyo and a couple of weeks in the countryside.

Worth checking out Japan Rail Pass if you're thinking of going around different parts in the country. It's a pretty good deal!

Hello,

I've posted on Hijack about the Ableton Live workshops a few times before... We've been running it for about 2 years but unfortunately we haven’t been able to continue the workshop recently as the conference room we used to hire (upstairs in the Full Moon) have been renovated into extra bedrooms. So we’re looking for a new space - do you have any suggestions?

We’re looking for a space with a projector and monitor speakers. There’s usually 5 – 10 of us and we used to do 2 hour sessions fortnightly. The Full Moon used to cost us £10 an hour including the projector & speakers so we just chipped in a few quid each to cover that.

We've got in touch with café Kino’s for their basement and also Arnolfini but haven’t had much luck. I looked at room hire in Hamilton House but it seems pretty pricey…

It's been tricky to find a place which can offer a deal as good as what the Full Moon used to do. It’d be a real shame if we had to stop this as it’s been really good fun sharing knowledge and meeting nice people. It would be ace if anyone here had any suggestions!

Thanks!

Hello,

We've lost a couple of regulars in our team so looking for new players to join!

We play on Mondays (times vary between 7ish - 9ish) at Goals Bristol South in Brislington. You can find the details of the place HERE. Should be able to sort out lifts from central Bristol if needed. We are currently in the league second from the bottom so the standard is pretty average.

39  General / The Forum / Re: Rio de Janeiro - travel tips? on: October 25, 2012, 14:58:33
I spent three months there quite a while ago. It's great. Copacaana was the really sleezy/touristy area. Although i'd highly recommend a club called HELP! if its still there - I got drugged by a columbian prostitute.

My only advice is expect to get robbed and don't be offended if you do. And try and change your hotel for one closer to Ipanema.

Oh and if it's the same as I went be warned to cash machines stop giving money out past about 10pm. So be warned.

Oh yeah and if your walking along at night slap the street lights and see what happens!

Cool thanks mate! Copacabana was recommended by a colleague and I have zero knowledge about the city so just picked a hotel near there... Will have a look into Ipanema!

Cheers for the advice...

Hello Hijack,

I'm off to Uruguay, Argentina then Brazil over the next couple of weeks. It's a work trip but managed to blag a few days off at the end of the trip, spending time in Rio.

Has anyone got any recommendations on where's good to visit out there? I'm quite keen to go record shopping whilst out there so any info on that would be really helpful!
