General / The Forum / Re: Automatic Interactive VJ Projection Software for Venues, Clubs etc..........

I would be interested in a demo. With the software I use, it is able to be used automated, (which is a bit crap) or from plugging a mic and setting it create visuals from a mic, (but is a pain to set up) so something simple to set up would be good, it's nice to have the option to put the visuals on automated if you are the only one VJ’ing, on a night because after a wile it messes with your eyes, plus you can go to the bar too then too.

This is more a brain storm than anything, I've been given the task of starting a chill out show. I've got loads of artists and albums and tracks in mind that I'm really into but I know there's hundreds more out there!
So what are your favourite chill out / down beat / relaxed musical moments > > > either actual tunes, or whole albums, or artists in general... or even compilations?
a few to start with
Future Sound Of London - Lifeforms (LP) Sunday Best 1&2 - (compilation series) Billy Holiday Coldcut - Autumn Leaves The Herbaliser - The Crow Orbital - Belfast Vangelis
I used to do a chill-out radio show with a couple of other guys when I was a student, on an RSL (restricted service license) station called Nerve FM in Bournemouth. The show was called Midnight In Europe, from a track by the same name. We nicked the "it's midnight in Europe" sample as our show opening. Since the other two were musical fuckwits, I had to put the playlist together, mix it etc. I used to start off more uptempo - a bit of Detroit techno, deep house etc, then progressively get slower, taking in all sorts along the way, from obscure European electronica, to Warp type stuff, traditional ambient house, balearica, Ninja Tune/Mo Wax style trip hop, Pork Recordings stoner funk etc etc. I used to do a bit at the end of the show called the "Ambient Greenhouse", which would be 45 minutes of uber-ambient stuff - lots of largely beatless tracks, mixed with weird samples, bits from comedy shows, old pink floyd records etc. Ah, those were the days. I used to LOVE doing that show. Radio is ace. I haven't listened to a lot of the records I used to play in years, but if you'd like more advice/want to talk about it, I'd quite enjoy the chance to rifle through a few of my old 12s and CDs again :-) The track " midnight in Europe" was by O30 I think?

me, I do memememememmmmeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee the merits of using found/downloaded etc footage is quite a big debate in the vjworld and heres my take on it... If we take the term VJ to be a decendent of the term DJ then using other peoples footage is what your supposed to do (DJs dont typically play entire sets of there own records). However it is the norm for most modern VJs to act as producers as well, the benefits of this being that everything can be tightly customised however its a lot more work. Yeah totally.. I have used a bit of both really. I've used already found footage, used footage that I have taken and edited myself and also made some animation. To make vjloops does take time, plus you ideally need lots of loops for different nights.

I think there are a few factors that make for a good VJ performance. The first thing is to get the right type of film for the right type of music. It helps if a VJ understands and knows what music he is playing to, personally I find it harder to VJ along to music that I don't know, but It really pays off if you can VJ along to track and project up something that is relevant to it, though that can't happen all the time with club music. The other factor is the venue itself, position of the screen is one of the most important things you can have, so if its kinda shoved in the corner then most people are not going to take notice if the screen is right where the action is then the focus is more on the visuals too. One example is Timbuk2 where most visuals are performed from the side, it looks good, but it would be better to get them where the action is. Saying that, I understand that it's hard to do that with the layout of some clubs to get the VJ and projector positioned correctly. Visuals can totally add to club night, but they have to be part of the set too and not just a side thought.

Silly question, but have you tried re-booting it? More than likely the screen is shafted, though you could try switching off the screen off and on via the keyboard. Some laptops have a display test option, but it depends on the laptop you have. If the screen is knackered then EBay is a good place to get parts at a reasonable price.

Speaking of nights, my Label Boltfish are trying to arrange a night for the label here in Bristol later in the year, they are putting out another complication of ambient/melodic/experimental/cinematic/IDM/ electronic muzig and are looking to put on some nights to launch the Album. Bristol has been mentioned as a potential place to stage one of the nights, it will have some live performances from Boltfish artists, DJ’s plus a big name to headline the night. It's all in the early stages at the moment, but I will keep you posted as it progresses.

"Someone told me the other day that glitch was when you deliberately mixed too tracks so it sounded like you were mixing badly - is that just a part of it?"
Glitch is suppost to mean that there are lots of - clicks - tings, pops noises etc that make up the sounds in the drum pattern..

I know exactly where you are coming from Punksi, I think music will always be slot in to pigeon holes, Spose it’s human nature to do so.
The music I make has been compared to Aphex, Plaid, Warp etc. However, I’m not actually making it purposely to sound like them, It’s ‘cus I’m making the music I want to make. Yes, these artists have had an influence on my style, but I’m sure if I had never heard them, I would still be doing something very similar. One example is of a music making mate of mine who was told he sounded like boards of Canada and he had never heard of them at that point.

It's all music at the end of the day, categorisation can be a pain in the ass, but I suppose its human nature to categorise things and slot them in to the various genres, I try to follow the theory that states that there are only two types of music. Good and Bad.

IDM is such a nasty phrase. I think you can probably blame the music journalists of the early 90’s for coining the phrase.
I just prefer just to call it electronica, electronic music or glitch. I think they call it intelligent because of the complex rhythmical drum patterns and poly rhythms involved to craft the beats and noises. It does make it sound a bit anal when the word Intelligent is used to describe it.
