I think playing at Ashton Court has been pretty much the top of my 'Things I still need to do as a DJ' list for EVER!

3pm Sat in the Bling Bar I will be living the dream!

Still got to work out what to play though...
Clashing with General Levy, Guido and Only Joe - so jungle, dubstep and reggae already ruled out!

Complete rungleclotted wrongness. I reckon I could go for some of that by 3pm.

LOL. I'm currently thinking 110/220 bpm set... Moombah vs Multi-core.
At least then I've got some wiggle room for when I inevitably clear the dancefloor!

Was looking for a post-party party!
18  General / The Forum / Re: Brisfest goes to Ashton Court-lineup on page 2 on: August 14, 2012, 16:25:26
Is Rave on Avon not happening this year and it's the party in the mansion instead?

I second that question. Have DJd at Rave on Avon every time so far, would be good to do again. Not asked to do the festie this year, which is not that much of a surprise, though since we're a Bristol-based record label it would have been nice to have been asked  Two Thumbs Not complaining, though - will be up there supporting whatever  Two Thumbs

AFAIK they decided not to do Rave-on-Avon on the same weekend this year as they wanted 100% focus on the main event (and official afterparty).

Therefore, Rave-on-Avon took over from the Stokes Croft streetfest this year. See: http://www.brisfest.co.uk/raveonavon/

Three that I've generally used over the years...

Juno
The Hard Store
Dswat

TBH I'm mainly digital these days, but still buy vinyl (and record into computer) if no other option and I really want the tune.

EDIT:

Others I've also used less frequently....

Boomkat
Redeye
RaggaJungle.com
Outerbound

http://www.chemical-records.co.uk/sc/search?must=minirig&fid=&inandout=true&SRI=true&ND=-1&dltype=est&dltype=sup&dltype=nest

Minirig Portable Speakers with splitter cable [PAIR]
MINIRIGPR 149.98 (179.98 inc. VAT)

Minirig Portable Speaker With Carry Pouch
MINIRIG 74.99 (89.99 inc. VAT)

Not really sure what the purpose of that post is? They weren't 90 the last time I looked. I've heard them and they sound great, but it's a lot of money. Also, are tye ever ins tock anywhere? I go away in a week, is there any chance of actually getting one before then?

AFAIK they were always 85 without a case, and the case costs a fiver, so 90 with the case (which is a nice case and worth it BTW).

I'd contact the guys directly (email/twitter/whatever) and ask about where best to get one, they MAY be able to sort something out in time.

37  General / The Forum / Re: Vinyl Digitisation mission on: April 20, 2012, 12:58:42
Nice to see my old matey Ironside in here...

I bought Traktor Scratch with the vinyl medium but after investing in some MIDI equipment could no longer see the need for using the technics, other than for nostalgia purposes... Yes, people pour scorn on beatsynching etc, but using Traktor in its purist form introduces new elements to DJing, such as creative looping, which once you get into properly can be great fun....

I don't intend ever stopping adding to my record collection and will never sell it, but being able to record properly to digital these days is a necessary task as the future of DJing must surely lie with the likes of Traktor and Serato... I can even see CD decks being eventiually phased out... At the end of the day on price alone for CD decks, CDs are a superceded medium for me.

I always think that vinyl taught DJs will excel more on the likes of Traktor, certainly for as long as the early turntable sound can be remembered but it will be interesting to see how the future generation of DJs develop, those who can claim the pure digital medium as their own...

yeah, my mate has just bought an 'all-in-one' dj controller that you simply plug a memory card or USB drive into and go, no laptop/mixer/etc... required. I can see them being the 'next step' in terms of the djs starting out today. So easy to use and set up.

Bottom line, whatever you use, the 'selection' will ALWAYS be the first step, be that pre-prepared, 'on the fly' or somewhere in between.
38  General / The Forum / Re: Vinyl Digitisation mission on: April 20, 2012, 12:52:32

Recording vinyl is a pain, but then having a unreplacable vinyl damaged/dropped/worn out/etc.. is horrible. All mine get to stay in my house while I'm playing them out now!

Tell you what, I got the chance to dust off my turntables last weekend. Some of my old records actually had signs of mould!
All those free parties back in the day, beer spillage, blim damage, greasy fingers. If any DJ's have a stack of precious vinyl laying around I'd reccomend cleaning that shit up!

If they're new enough to be plastic not actual vinyl, they should clean up fine..

I've been asked before if i've 'put the crackles' on top of my set to make it sound more realistic, but its the actual vinyl recordings that sound like that!

Though I'll clean discs before I record them, I generally dont 'post-process' the recordings to remove all the crackles and things, though if its a really bad scratch/pop I'll try and take it out.
39  General / The Forum / Re: Vinyl Digitisation mission on: April 20, 2012, 12:30:46
i think about what i'm doing and pick out what is needed

Exactly what I do... from my hard drive ;]
Creating playlists are the modern equivilent of packing a record box. If i have a specific set to prepare for, then I'll do that.

It is easy to get swamped though, be that from standing in front of a wall of vinyl or from searching a computer.
Been on a proper distillation mission recently on my virtual 'dj box', make sooo much difference taking time to sort through everything.

I use traktor scratch as, for me, it provides the best storage medium combined with the best playback medium. That said, I probably use a fraction of its potential because I still bother to mix 'manually' and keep my DJ sets quite stripped down and 'traditional' (for want of a better term).

There have been numerous times I've been at a festival or whatever and have got to play 'bonus' sets or different sets with different genres because I have that stuff available on my laptop (somehting I wouldnt have been able to do if I'd simply packed a 'specific' record box.

I aint gonna lie and say I've NEVER had problems with setting up, using all that clobber simply to 'play records', but I can happily say that I've had more times where my setup has sounded better than the guy before/after me playing real vinyl due to worn/skippin needles, bass feedback, etc...

I spent many years carrying vinyl around, and my laptop bag is no lighter than a small full record bag.

Recording vinyl is a pain, but then having a unreplacable vinyl damaged/dropped/worn out/etc.. is horrible. All mine get to stay in my house while I'm playing them out now!

Setting up a mass of cables and equipment isnt for everyone (including, from experience, some people who insist on using it!!), but if you are on top of it and courteous about doing it, then its no bother really.

One day there will be the 'next thing', and when the 'next thing' arrives, I'll just transfer my collection across to it as and when it suits me to do so, but equally, I'm already having to specify that decks are available when I do a gig and technics aint being made any more.

Horses for courses innit.

Mate, there are soooo many of these things out there, I'd certainly want to try a few out before going with one or other...

Do you want a completly 'standalone' unit or do you want one to use with a laptop?

There are a good few sites dedicated to this sort of thing, for example http://www.digitaldjtips.com/

They have a large round up of controllers here:

http://www.digitaldjtips.com/2011/12/dj-midi-controllers-buyers-guide-2012/

And a preview of the new stanton all-in-one thing here:

This looks OK,

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-178-OE

Personally, I'd buy compoments and build ur own, then you can spend more of the budget on stuff that really matters to you (like a quiet case or fans).

Although the system linked to above doesnt have one, I would strongly recommend an SSD for your 'operating system & programs' drive, as its offers a massive performance boost in day-to-day operations (start up time, loading programs, etc..).

I'm married and loving it, but I was just as happy with my non-married relationship for 12 years beforehand.

Do what you want, as long as it makes you happy (or at the very least doesnt make you miserable).

I see alot of people pissing away alot of money on dumb shit, its not limited to weddings.

To be fair, your wedding was lush, perfect vibes  Love

Cheers mate!

There was nothing about that day that we felt 'obliged' to do or that we thought was a waste of money.

We organised the entire thing ourselves with help from alot of friends and family on what was, to us, a reasonable budget.

It was a lot of work, but we never really felt stressed by it or that it was running away from us.
