on this note, don't wanna be negative but what has happened to bristol club nights?
i go out less than i used to nowadays but every single time i am disappointed by the soundsystem.
maybe i was spoilt by dissident, dirt etc. but it seems every venue now just has crappy PA style speakers and maybe a little sub, where are the stacks?!?

While I see where you're coming from if we're honest Stokes croft was a complete shithole... When you got out the clubs or when you passed back through you put your head down and walked through quickly trying to avoid the gangster types staring you out. I remember the night the guy got murdered in club uk I walked back through from thekla or somewhere and got asked what "the fuck I was looking at" 3 times in 100 yards. It was seriously sketchy that night and that wasn't uncommon. That's not to mention the stupid number of crack heads, although it was getting better by 08. I'd rather have pissed students any time.
Having said all that the clubs were much better. I got all sentimental about clockwork/powerhouse the other day. And the old Lakota with propper courtyard. And smoking inside....
never found any real aggyness to be honest, always had amazing nights out there between 06 and 08... for me the place was never the same after clockwork shut, i'm with you on the sentimentality! walked up stokes croft late at night the other day for the first time in ages and oh my god so many taxis! felt like park street...

when i first came here there was definitely a lot more mid-size raves with good line ups happening, nowadays it seems it's either massive things at motion with terrible music or wanky cool kid things at tiny places with what sounds like a domestic hi-fi linkup. obviously there are exceptions and i do rate what a lot of promoters are doing, even if it's not really my thing.
however i think the real problem is that there is literally no where with proper systems anymore. i literally haven't heard a proper rig in like 2 years. that makes me sad.
This will change in the next couple of months. Some exciting things going on in Bristol atm, which should see some more small > mid size dances going on ima hold you to that

I swore blind at one stage that I'd never change to CDs or digital and stick with the faithful vinyl... But after playing around with a cracked copy of traktor about2 years ago I decided to take the plunge and put the funds for my record buying budget into getting the original Traktor (with vinyl emulation) plus a load of MIDI equipment... Nowadays I couldn't be without Traktor and feel that it makes digital DJing superior to the old style vinyl. there are drawbacks in that you don't get a nice hard format music collection and it maybe isn't as touchey feeley handson as vinyl but there are a new set of skills to learn and once you get going you realise that digital DJing is a more versatile option.. No turning back now...
until they release the next "new thing" and you have to leave this one and buy that..and so on and so forth.. play records..select your choice with care and present it with excitement..you don't need all the bells and whistles shit play what you like and let other people play what they like

What the fuck happened to meeting the opposite sex in pubs and clubs? I despair.
What happened to telling the girls father you earn 10,000 Guineas a year and you plan to buy a plantation in the West Indies?

"I expect that the far-left will rationalise this as another example of 'selfish capitalism' and revel in how ever more squalor adds 'authenticity' to their middle class fad of poverty tourism."
this is sort of funny

Er, why is it ok for people to take over the streets with loud soundsystems... but long serving establishments a stone throw away (such as the Croft) constantly get beef for noise from the council?? And as for property owners turning Stokes Croft into Shoreditch?? I think the opening of Hamilton House* has been the main catalyst in this tbh *not knocking HH, but when the Canteen opened the whole road changedthe canteen is boater shoe central to be fair.
