41% turnout is much higher than was expected. No to AV supporters in HoL had been delaying the bill because they wanted a 40% turnout threshold to make the referendum legitimate, which the yes to AV refused to concede (even though simultaneously arguing that unless a candidate gets 50% of the vote the system is undemocratic)

28  General / The Forum / Re: May council elections TUSC nomination on: March 23, 2011, 18:55:00
certainly an interesting graph. when i said myth i didn't mean to say that there is no deficit (as my graph also showed) but that the size of the deficit is by no means unprecedented. clearly it is positive to reduce the deficit but the way in which the government is attempting to do so is not the right way and is counter productive.
29  General / The Forum / Re: May council elections TUSC nomination on: March 23, 2011, 18:30:20
Money to prevent cuts can be found. Firstly an end to the involvement of British troops in Afghanistan. The tomahawk missiles being fired in Libya cost 900,000 each. Typhoon fighters cost 70m each. Cut spending on nuclear deterrent and next generation weapons.

The introduction of truly progressive taxation, including higher rates of tax for individuals and corporations. A genuine crackdown on tax avoidance and tax evasion. PCS estimates that 70bn a year is lost in tax through illegal tax evasion. Whilst a further 25bn a year is estimated to be lost through tax avoidance.

These measures alone would go a long way to plugging the deficit, which is a myth of the condem government anyway http://tinyurl.com/6k7kdk6
30  General / The Forum / Re: May council elections TUSC nomination on: March 23, 2011, 18:04:48
Admittedly I should have been a bit more thoughtful in my expression of not residing in that particular ward. I suppose by the nature of me posting on hijack looking for nominations it could have been presupposed that I am not particularly well connected in the area.

As a student I can associate with many living in that area. Bristol city council announced the biggest ever cuts package in its history. This will effect all people, in all wards. Residents of Bristol who had absolutely nothing to do with the financial disaster brought about by the bankers are being punished by job cuts and cuts to public services.

BCC and Barbara Janke gave us the crocodile tears of saying that they didnt want to make cuts but that they had no choice. There was an alternative they could have set a needs budget like Liverpool council in the 1980s. The cuts are taking effect and they are hurting in areas that those on this message board most likely care about. The council has approved an 8% cuts to arts grants and a further 25% cut to its budget for arts, events and festivals. Not to mentioned plans to sell of green spaces in Bristol and the closure of ESOL colleges.

The council elections on May 5th are going to serve as a massive protest against this Condem government. For all those who have had to face a further rise in VAT by a tory government, who have lost their job, 30% rise in train fares, cuts to legal aid, the abolishment of disability mobility allowance, cuts to benefits, parents left wondering how their children can go to university or college because of cuts to EMA and a rise in tuition fees. Whilst companies get a reduction in corporation tax, whilst bankers keep claiming their bonuses, whilst George Osborne mocks us all with "were all in this together" whilst companies like Boots, Vodaphone and Topshop avoid billions in tax. With a labour party in opposition who would still be cutting public services and cutting jobs who can only offer a feeble "too much too fast" line, these are all reasons to display ones anger and indignation with the government by voting TUSC.

I could give a detailed account of the issues that TUSC is standing on, but as this is primarily a music forum I just wanted to be short and to the point. As the previous post suggested clifton east isn't exactly a hotbed of socialism.

Clearly I am not a seasoned politician. I am just a young student who is trying to take a stand against the cuts in Bristol and the detrimental effect that they are having on the lives of those living in this city, in particular the good people of Clifton East.
33  General / The Forum / May council elections TUSC nomination on: March 23, 2011, 16:26:30

hey guys,

I am intending to stand for may council election in Clifton East Ward. I am standing under TUSC (Trade Unionists and Socialists Against Cuts) I need 10 nominations. All I need from a nominee is a signature and name.

I live in st andrews and dont actually know people in clifton east. if you or someone you know lives in clifton east and is on the electoral register and would be happy to nominate a candidate who is standing against all cuts to public services and privatisations then please PM me.

cheers
