Hi, I'm Oli, 28. came here because I saw a bunch of hits on my blog from here, been aware of the forum for ages, but wasn't massively my sort of thing. I've sent a few people here though. I fix old valve amps, and soldering new photo cables onto Technics decks seems to be my new thing to be doing, word got round or something. Really, I'm pretty sure all they need is the photo jacks soldered on properly, but people bring me them with whole new cables, and I don't even know why they use phono connectors to start with, so who am I to argue. That blog I mentioned: http://ampstack.wordpress.com/

Found thread from blog hits. Totally didn't get a message though, how did you try and send one?

Anyway, 100w valve head is loads of power, and to do much with that power, it will need big transformers, which means you are stuck with heavy. And having space to spread stuff out makes things quiet, so kind of stuck with big too. Good news is if you have a bassist, no massive need for 100w. Stuff smaller than that isn't so much my territory, but I typed a whole bunch anyway, totally ignoring the mention of Tiny Terrors being over budget:

What's the price range we are working with? Cheap stuff: Orange Tiny Terrors (and current Orange amps in general) are tacky pieces of shit, but at least the Tiny Terrors aren't overpriced tacky pieces of shit, and they sound fine, pretty handy size wise. I really want to have a poke about in some Bugera amps too see what they are like, but damndest thing, none seem to be breaking. On the second hand side of things, Laney seem to be best bang for buck, the AOR stuff comes in various sizes and is pretty Marshally. Although I'd not put standard Marshall sound in the warm territory, AOR 30 or 50 combos are pretty nice, come up cheap, if you beat me to them, I'm figuring them for the next thing to be climbing in price. Stuff I have: got a Laney AOR 100w for about 320 when I've sorted it (just a cleaning and checking and valving), vintage I have this Nolan 100w thing, pretty much a Marshall clone, nicer components, so warmer instead of fizzy when you crank it, more girth and bottom (I'd cheerfully use if for bass). Those are both heavyweights though.

Spensive toys: Matamp wins for new. But here is the fucking ridiculous bargain I saw, its a british handwired on turrets flagship valve amp, but no-one gives a shit about them: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ashdown-Peacemaker-100w-Valve-Head-and-4x12-Cabinet-/140923041466?pt=UK_MusicalInstr_Amplifiers_RL&hash=item20cfaaf6ba

Again, heavyweight though, nice handles makes it bit more portable.
