After what they did to syndicate and deusex I have low expectations.

I really hope you're wrong as I've been excited about this for a LONG time....I loved Enemy Unknown and Terror from the Deep and from the videos I've seen of this it looks brilliant. The "ant farm" idea for the base looks really well thought out and the update to the missions/combat mechanics looks true to the original but with a more updated feel/modern twist.

VERY EXCITED.

Sleeping dogs.

Warp radio.

Really good pc port (apart from a micro stutter issue)

Quite enjoying this game but feel it could be better. It feels like I'm going through the motions sometimes without really getting involved. Massive GTA clone and rarely feels like its own unique game.

Still playing and will complete though!
8  General / The Forum / Re: Morocco on: July 29, 2012, 10:47:14
I too would recommend Essouira although I spent 4 days there quite happily and could have spent longer.....if the weather's nice there are a couple of beach bars to hang in and enjoy lazy boozy days and plenty of delicious seafood. I found smoke in Essouira without any todo but you may be wise to be cautious...

I didn't like Marrakech much at all. Yes it was one hell of an experience and you have to go to Marrakech and the souk if you go to Morocco but I would cap it at 2 days - FAR too hectic a place for my liking....do be aware of people trying to rip you off everywhere - even if you just ask for directions someone will try and fleece some dirram from you! My favourite haggling line was "miss keen" (no idea how's it's actually written) - it's what the beggars say so the market traders appreciate the irony when you roll it out! Get em to laugh and you get a reduction is what I found!

By far my favourite place was the Atlas Mountains, sadly I can't remember the name of the village we went to. Mindblowing scenery, exceptionally friendly people and fantastic walks....one tip though is BRING BOOZE WITH YOU - after a 6 hour hike up above the snow line we were craving a drink to top it all off but being in a tiny Muslim mountain village prohibits easy access to liquor!

Haven't been to Agadir, Fez or anywhere else so can't comment on other places i'm afraid.

Is anyone else still playing Skyrim?

I can't stop going back to it...I've been into it on and off since release day.

I took the friday off and packed the mrs off to her brother's the weekend it was released and put in a solid 55 hours that weekend....was playing it for a couple of months after that too - fantastic game. Once I'd got to level 50, completed all main and guild missions and got all xbox achievements I decided to knock it on th ehead until some DLC arrived. I've been exceptionally busy with all things Bloc but after this weekend I'm ready to become a Dawnguard and lose my life to Skyrim once more...

As someone who is overseeing all the technical requirements for Bloc I can assure you that this is not happening at Lakota - not because I know where it is or anything about the event itself but because I know the space and equipment that will be required in order to make the ISAM show work.

Sorry to burst your bubble peeps but this is not at Lakota....the only places that could house this event in terms of space would be Academy, Anson Rooms & Colston Hall (Malcolm X too but they've not got the rigging).
16  General / The Forum / Re: GAMERS! on: May 19, 2012, 08:39:42
Bought the Witcher 2 and am having an odd experience with it...I agree the characters, story, voice acting and graphics are all good and am enjoying the more "mature" nature of the storyline and script. All that aside I'm finding the game quite tedious - controls are a bit shitty (really feels like a port from PC and not built for the xbox - I walk around and feel like i should be WASDing)], the combat is really hard but not that engaging and the levelling system is poor.

On the other hand I'm only in Flotsam so I guess I may get more into it but all I'm thinking right now is either playing Trials Evolution or going out to buy Max Payne 3 or Diablo 3....

18  General / The Forum / Re: vegetarians on: April 28, 2012, 10:26:39
Why not just make a big, tasty veggie chilli for everyone instead of making one meat chilli and one veg one?

Boil some split peas in a small saucepan.
Fry up garlic, onion, chopped chilli, and lots of cumin in olive oil in a big pan.
Add soft veggies to cook up (e.g., chopped courgettes and mushrooms).
Once they're frying nicely add some supermarket veggie mince (not much flavour but adds texture).
3-5 mins later add in some good quality chopped tomatoes.
Add a bit of vinegar and some sugar.  Maybe a bit of ketchup and some vegetable stock too.
Simmer gently; add beans of choice (e.g., kidney or black eye, but tinned baked beans work surprisingly well).
Simmer some more; add the split peas you've been cooking.
Add freshly ground black pepper, basil, and thyme, stir, and cook for two more minutes before it's done.

I think the chocolate/mole thing tastes horrible.  Refried beans taste great but I don't know how to make them.

A vegetarian perchance? FFS.

Why do vegetarians get to demand vegetarian food?

None of my vegetarian friends will serve me meat when I come to visit...

Yes, exactly.....unless you're friends with Snoo or Emma Pippin (back in her veggie days)...

Hotels are looking expensive via Bloc website - costing a minimum of 250 for the 2 nights! Costly working weekend if you ask me...

Indeed it is Emma but sadly it can't be helped. Really this sort of position would suit someone who live in London (like Harry for instance!) or who has mates nearby. With no accommodation on site it makes things rather tricky.
20  General / The Forum / Do you want to work at Bloc? on: April 25, 2012, 14:09:05
Hi all

As some of you may know I do the technical management at Bloc and, with the change of site and increase in production, I am looking to expand my team.

I have a number of Technical Assistant roles I need to fill for which I need people with the following characteristics:
- have some technical experience - a promoter or DJ should be fine, you should know how to plug equipment together, what the different cables are and have a smattering of other relevant knowledge
- proactive
- willing to carry heavy things - the role will involve lugging flight cases around (amongst other things).

You would be expected to work a 6 hour shift each day (Friday and Saturday) and for that you will get a meal, some drinks, and most importantly a ticket for yourself. Sadly we cannot offer accommodation. This is a proper job though and you will be expected to be sober and competent!

If you are interested please drop me a line at: blocproduction [at] gmail.com and let me know any relevant experience you have.

Cheers,
Ed

As someone who works at a large College in south London I work with countless christians, muslims, sikhs, jews and the rest and I have to bite my tongue on a daily basis because of the contracdiction in terms that is "equality & diversity".

My feelings towards religion and the religious range from hate to pity and occasionally indifference. I know I don't have the unilateral answer to everything but if you deconstruct the basis of all (abrahamic - I don't know enough about the others to comment) religions it's all a remarkable amount of piffle. Yes it served a positive purpose in the past but now we (supposedly) have the enlightenment to live an altruistic and social life without the need to believe in some beardy nobarse or follow a strict code that was written centuries ago and has been tailored since to "keep up with modern trends".

My main ire at the moment is living within a grenade throw of an evo church....last summer they had a tambourine troupe day in the road outside.....this year I'm ready for them with large soundsystem, Merzbow, a loud-hailer and buckets of offal.

I have many issues with religion but zionism is a further step beyond and deplorable. Not sure I agree with these guys' rhetoric but I do with the sentiment - sadly now there are innocent (aside from the irationalism of being religious) Jewish people living in Israel who would be as much pained to be ousted from their homes as the Palestinian's and people from Gaza were/are so what is the solution now...?

Any non-fps games people are excited about?!

For deffo...
BATMAN: ARKHAM CITY
ELDER SCROLLS: SKYRIM
LA NOIRE - end of May
MASS EFFECT 3 - November
TROPICO 4 - Q4
XCOM - Q4 (a bit fps I admit)

I want them all now please.

xcom (is going to be awful) and skyrim are pretty straight fps', Ed. I think Bethesda mentioned  there be a third person mode in Skyrim, but I aint seen any footage.

Why is xcom going to be terrible? Surely skyrim is an RPG not an FPS?!

Ed Rush? Really?

Ed Rush is still one of the best drum and bass DJs around IMO.

can't wait for this  Tomato Slayer!

I don't doubt that, but hardly 'overkill' is he?

I don't know....fringes of our musical scope maybe but he's damn good nonetheless. Also as one of 3 stages we have had to make some concessions in terms of our breadth of appeal as I'm sure you can understand Alex.

Yeah I can see that, thought it might be the case to some extent, im still gonna say it's a shame though, Overkill seems like one thing that should never be watered down! but I can understand why. Although I do wonder if it has much to do with the SGP crew sticking their nose in and wanting everything to appeal to fixie riders?

 Huh

I really don't see how Ed Rush would at all contribute to anything being watered down.  his sets are absolutely devastating, probably the hardest dnb without crossing the boundary into skull step (CV, Limewax etc).  Obviously i can't speak for Ed and Ned but i doubt SGP have had anything to do with their bookings this year, i know they were looking to get Ed Rush last year before it was cancelled.

Well, depends on your perspective really, I also can't speak for Ed and Ned, but it's fair to say that Overkill is about uncompromisingly heavy and complex or otherwise challenging music, and to me Ed Rush is the least of those things on the bill really. He may be heavy and fast for a drum n bass dj, but its not much compared to drumcorps and producer (not that everything should be quite that extreme, but I just don't think anyone who's into the more hardline leftfield that overkill normally provides would find Ed rush that exciting), and while obviously people like Eskmo aren't very fast/heavy, his music is still pretty complex and challenging.
Good to know they wanted him last year tho and it's not just SGP telling them to broaden their appeal on account of there being less stages

@ Alex I CAN talk for myself and Ned and I can honestly say we have had zero pressure from SGP to make more mass appeal bookings. We outselves have been conscious that we are one of the main stages and therefore must broaden our appeal A LITTLE but we would never compromise our musical integrity as (as you rightly point out) that would be very unOverkill!

I don't have time to find links but find some music by:
WHITEHOUSE
OTOMO YOSHIDE
KARLHEINZ STOCKHAUSEN
MERZBOW

and you'd be onto a start of some of the breadth in noise music.
48  General / The Forum / Re: noise/experimental music in bristol? on: March 02, 2011, 14:05:20
yes, bristol uk.  husband is british.

Two Thumbs by the way, the link I posted isn't a joke... it's Choke Forum, which is Bristol's alternative/metal/rock/experimental/terrible music forum

It's not really for those things, at one point it was, its a snapshot of a micro-scene that was in bristol in the mid 2000s, most of the people there are involved with bands with no fixed genre, so you've got the noise weirdo's with the 90s indie throwbacks, people who ramble on about dubstep all day and discuss politics.

Doctor Napalm on there is a gentleman called Greg who I've collaborated with many times and runs LF records, within the noise world here he's very involved you should definitely speak to him.

But the noise scene in Bristol was pretty much disrupted by the gentrification of stokes croft. There were regular things at The Cube (which still does things, but not so underground) The Croft (which does do things) but when The Full Moon was turned into an Eco Hostel and The Junction was turned into a pizza pub thing, the whole thing went south.

I don't live in Bristol any more but is there any venue in the city that will charge you almost nothing for the room and basically let you put concerts on where more often than not 10 or less people will show up?

Not sure Tone as I too have left Bristol.....Take 5 or Leftbank maybe? There's always some new place that doesnt' know what they're letting themselves in for!

49  General / The Forum / Re: GAMERS! on: March 02, 2011, 13:17:30
thats almost as bad as the disappointment that was spore

What happened to that game? I recall the big push before it was released, but it seemed to disappear after it came out.

Amazing behavioral AI and skeletal control was ditched for more 'accessible' gamplay.

I waited 3 years for that game and it was shit. (I'll dig out the video that gost me hooked later)
As you played it, it kept promising to get better but then you end up in space where you hit a near vertical difficulty curve.
THe one time I played i ended up in space and getting attacked by a level 10 enemy when i was only level 2 so I could not have any sort of AI defence and ended up having to defend manually all the time so the possible saving grace of exploring and colonising a galaxy was fucked.

The was the chance to move planets orbits with meteor impacts to change climate, abduction and repopulation.
all ruined.

A massive fail.

I mostly agree - promised so much more than what delivered - played it for a mere 10 to 15 hours ather than the 100+ I was expecting to!
50  General / The Forum / Re: GAMERS! on: March 02, 2011, 12:41:44
Not only des it play like it's now Mass Effect: Origins but that demo was booooooooooring.

TBH the last game i played that wasn't really dull was Stacking and Limbo. I liked the art design mainly on that Dragon age demo, But yeah it did play like Mass Effect, another game that was pretty but boring with a shoddy combat system, seems like the majority of games go for looks over playability these days. If you have some recommendations of some more unusual inventive games i'd be well up for hearing them.  Two Thumbs

I'm really enjoying Stacking - nice lateral thinking and a lovely new take on the point and click adventures of yester year (which I was such a fan of) - too short though as I've completed the main game and am just doing all the little bits now.

I too wasn't that impressed with the DA2 demo - a SLIGHTLY better combat system than DA:O but still a bit clunky - I will buy the game though as there's not much out there atm that I want to play...
