Aaaah I want to load this but once again shit is preventing me.
This time it's coz pikey fookers stole my laptop, phone, and headphones after I invited them back from a club for breakfast and fell asleep.
How uncivilised some people are.

16  Food for your Ears / The Desk / Re: Kick Drums on: November 17, 2007, 10:38:00
Nice one.

Any tips on compression? It tends to phatten up the sound,
L

What do people mean exactly when they say "phatten up", they often say this about compression and I'm guessing it means that it makes the sound in some way larger. If we are accepting that Phatter mean larger, then compression on a kick drum will make it less "Phatt", I would describe the effect as something closer to tightness, you can make the kick sound more punchy and clippy so it will cut through a mix better but I think people mistake some increase in the "size" of the kick due to imbalance when when setting the gain so in the end they think it sounds better mostly because they have made it louder...be careful not to add a few db of gain compensation when comparing the original kick with the compressed one because this can fool you into thinking the compressed version is better.  I feel that compression take away a significant portion of the low frequency enery out of a kick (but this is often a good thing)....if you're after a very heavy kick then multiband distortion, eq and some bit crushing like the Sonalksis plugin might be more use than compression in giving you a large sound. But then when you play it on a big rig rather than you're little speakers at home it'll be too big so you better compress it.    Sorry i'm still a bit drunk from last night not really sure what or why I'm talking about.

Well that was a lot of fun.  Well done all who took part, thought we were lucky to get through, had a blast  Smiley Shame I smashed my controller keyboard in the semi-final (rock'n'Roll style), might have given them more of a run for their money in the final, but in fairness we were never going to beat them anyway so it didn't make much difference. Headphobe/Defazed worthy champions.  Slayer
28  General / The Forum / Re: LAPTOP BATTLE UK v3 - FRIDAY 30th MARCH 2007 on: March 30, 2007, 00:13:32

I always though Bob Scratchet was a good name for a turntablist especially if you cut up festive tunes.

33  Food for your Ears / The Desk / Re: S.I.R. Convolution reverb - Plug in delay compensation in ableton? on: February 20, 2007, 21:31:53
Any joy?
Also Ableton has its own delay compensation I think so maybe you could try that. Smiley
34  Food for your Ears / The Desk / Re: S.I.R. Convolution reverb - Plug in delay compensation in ableton? on: February 20, 2007, 14:14:22
Have you tried using the same impulses in an alternative convolution reverb plugin, you can DL free ones, you can "bet" it might work.

There is plenty of good stuff being made but sadly much more bad stuff. Just stay away from the mainstream then you should be ok.

A few names of people making stuff that doesn't sound lame:

Si Begg
Jnr Hacksaw
Cursor Miner
Senor Frio
Synapse
AL Tourettes
Full Spectrum

Not sure where a manual can be found but just mess about with it for a bit, it's quite intuitive. Won't take you more than a few hours to get to grips with most of it. Any specific details and I might be able to help.
47  General / The Forum / Re: Favourite Hijack Mixes of 2006 on: January 01, 2007, 17:45:30
Bushby - Audio Tourism
Starts of kind of dubstep/grimey then evolves into quality electro-breaks. Doesn't come much finer than this mix...

50  General / The Forum / Re: do fat people's nipples bleed when they run?? on: November 28, 2006, 19:31:38
My boobs bled from running once when I was a nipper but I was thin as a rake, was more to do with the back of the club logo on my vest being like sandpaper, I suppose it would have been even worse if I was fat.
