Food for your Ears / The Desk / Vinyl Digitizing Issues - Audio 8 & Audacity
|
on: April 13, 2011, 18:19:34
|
Greetz Hijack,
I've recently decided to digitize my record collection to use with my Traktor setup before they deteriorate further, I understand that this is a case of simply plugging my turntable into the 1/2 IN channel on my Audio 8 external soundcard and recording using Audacity with the appropriate recording inputs selected?
I've done that and run into a slight problem... When I press record the signal appears to come through rather quietly, the waveform produced is really really small and overly quiet when played back. I've tried remedying this by upping the microphone input level in Audacity which allows the recording to come out at a sort-of normal volume (though the waveform is still ridiculously small), however it also causes a large amount of hiss/hum.
Could this be due to something I haven't done correctly yet, a ground loop, or is my computer simply a pile of shite? I understand that the Audio 8 contains phono pre-amps, so I'm a bit confused as to why the signal is so weak...
I'm starting to think it may be my computer and not the recording process as such, as the hiss/hum comes through on my mixer when I pump up the channel that it's playing back through even when the recording isn't playing back... Also, when I plug my headphones into one of the headphone sockets on the computer I can also hear shitloads of weird computery noises when the mouse is moving or the hard drive is working etc...
Any thoughts anyone? Cheers in advance...

The woman on the programme was totally playing for the camera IMO. At the end of the day you have to balance weed on three factors in the way you make up your own mind:
The effect on your social life/mindstate/motivation (could you see yourself chonging an teenth (and nowt else) a night while holding a 'proper' job?) The overall strength of what you smoke, and how much you really enjoy it The effect on your finances (given the pisstake rates dealers are giving these days)
BBC3's demographic is for the approx. 22-35 year old age group, in my humble opinion that makes a hell of a lot of that they chuck out complete bollocks, simply because many many people in that group do not watch TV regularly. For example: Sex With Mum & Dad, Freaky Eaters, 2 Pints, Glamour Girls etc.
Thisis not to say that they make some good programming, such as Gavin & Stacey, Pulling, Man Stroke Woman and such... But still, programmes pertaining to give a window into 'real life' underculture are complete shite. Go out and spend that hour actually doing it if you're that curious. Cheers all!

I'd be honoured if there was a spare set going. Haven't played at a hijack party before but I've smashed in various house parties and Union nights up in the gash city of Leicester, just itching to get my spinning fingers working for people who appreciate it. I've got 2 mixes from a year or so ago on filefront under the username TheFreedomist, they are pretty old so excuse the few slight clangers. I can mix: Techy Dnb, Ragga Jungle, Dubstep, Breakcore, Gabber, and would like to hear back from y'all...

Heard about this off my brother when I came back from Leicester on Sunday, before they found him. He was in the year above me at school and always seemed like a gentleman, reserved yet witty. Used to see him now and again at gigs or when he popped round to see my bro with mates and such. Makes you truly wonder what kind of a world we inhabit when shit like this happens day in day out, to people that in no way deserve it. Condolences go out to his family, girlfriend and mates. Goes on to show how truly unexpected and gut wrenching this is when you check the numerous facebook groups. Circumstances are being investigated, naturally. I hope to God more light is shed on what happened to the poor guy. R.I.P. Nick

http://www.vgcats.com/comics/This here webcomic I was sent summed up my opinion (and a lot of other people's I imagine) rather well... Fuck you Mr. Bay. Edit: Did anyone else's eyes rrrrreally hurt after watching this? Methinks making the robots ridiculously complex in design was a plan by the makers to make fanboys like me buy the DVD purely to watch the best bits in slow motion... Which I still might.

Food for your Ears / The Desk / Re: Adobe Audition/Cooledit Pro Help Needed...
|
on: October 17, 2006, 16:00:24

Im running a cracked copy of Cooledit Pro 2.1 and am having a little difficulty with it. Basically I'm just asking if anyone knows how to record a mix from turntables/mixer without it sounding like its underwater? I record in 192k 32-bit, and have to downsample it to 44.1k 16-bit to even save it as an mp3. The mixes I have done thus far don't have any clipping onl, but the sound is muddied and certain busy parts carry a lot of distortion... Shall I try saving in a different format (say, wma) and converting the sample with another program? Is Cooledit 2.1 even any good for this sort of activity? Anyone able to give me a few troubleshooting points, or at least direct me to a similar page/thread? Thankyouplease could be a problem with your sound card rather than the software. have you used the line-in successfully with any other software? have you checked the record levels on the general windows mixer tool? do you have the correct input selected in both windows and the Cool Edit preferences. in fact, it sounds to me like you may be trying to record your mix through a mic-in input rather than line-in. This can cause distortion Beard stroking stuff there, I'm not using a line-in socket as there does'nt seem to be one on the back or front of this PC, only 2 red slots with little pictures of Mics by them... I've used Sound Forge and Magix Music Maker previously with no hassles, looks like ill have to blag a copy of them from somewhere. Methinks I'll have to pop out and buy a half decent sound card with a decidated line-in socket... Although with your advice I've managed to make it sound a bit less shit, theres a marked drop in quality recording at 44.1 16-bit IMO, but its a lot better than previous attempts. I'll look into it further, cheers for the tips

|
on: October 13, 2006, 18:14:12

Sorry to butt in with a noobish question, but I realised my post on The Desk might take a while to garner any replies... Basically I'm running a version of Cooledit 2.1 and using it to record mixes from my turntable/mixer setup. I swear I've done it before and the quality has been fine, but after taking delivery of a new PC most of my recordings either sound like they are underwater or carry lots of distortion in busy parts of the mix. As far as I can tell there is no 'clipping' style distortion, it just sounds as if the mic input can't handle it or something. I record at 192k 32-bit and this program will only save it to mp3 after downsampling it to 44.1k 16-bit, could this be the root of the problem? Should I just save it as say, a wma. file and convert it with another program? Or is Cooledit 2.1 just a pile of shite for this activity? By the way I'm merely using the 5.1 audio built into this PC, not any actual soundcard. I'm just getting into all this computer audio malarkey so please suffer this fool lightly! Any troubleshooting help or threads appreciated.

Anyone ever had that when you're sitting around having a smoke and such, not even knowing that the night you've had stuck on your wall for weeks is trickling away? :ontheball: Once my mixer is un-fucked I'll send out Raggatastic Mk. The average person probably looked at the lineup, thought 'who the fuck are they', then looked at the price/venue and thought 'fuck that shit'. Its not like the previous mongrels were particularly rammed... Maybe all the junglists had exams/work, or got shanked up by the knife wielding maniacs that populate this fair isle. It started off pretty well IMO, but the vibe just got a bit ghey when people started realising 20 people in the main room was as big as it was gonna get... Big props to all the DJs, first thing I did this morning was bang on some Mad Dem sounds, big tunes!

I have to say that Morrisons fruit and veg is probably the worst out there, the veg has usually fallen on the floor at some point during transit, and the fruit (unless stored in a fridge) goes from rock solid to rotten in the space of about 24 hours. Cunts. The Riverford carrots are mighty tasty mind, my mums also got in on the organic veg box action... Not a bad idea I say

Drum gold, blue/silver rizla, slimline filtertips. STANDARD Golden Vag is utterly vile True say, I find the Golden Vag is like smoking a bonfire, also way too heavy to go with grade IMO... I tend to use greens with Drum Gold, as rolling up in a sweaty club with blues leads to structural integrtiy issues...

Well its their fault, ergo they should sort it out ASAP...
Where I work (fucking Morrisons) it happens all the time, the more of a stink you kick up (sob stories, rants, solicitor threats, etc) usually means the quicker HR get off their fat overpaid areses and sort out your money...
I'm sure theres some legal thing that says they have to do it within a week or something... Dont they do company loans or anything?

@ OAAHIBAH- I don't see that there is anything wrong with being political, but I can see ur problem if u think it's a token gesture (it is pretty old hat to have a pop at Bush, talk about a sitting duck!) . U gotta remember tho, Spectre is American, so he is probably more pissed off with Bush et al than most of us. And what's wrong with RATM anyway?
To me, political music is almost entirely half-assed, but I can say that about any music with a contrived "message" to give. Anything that sets music as a backdrop to someone's agenda comes across as shite to me. It doesn't matter where you're from, the political leader (or what is presented as) is never going to be won over by all the public, and they're all easy bloody targets - Wowzers jeepers, a dig at a politician! Boy, that sure is some radical free-thinking that expanded my mind. I thought his use of guitar was just showy and pointless. Utterly gewgaw. It didn't bring anything to the music (which was already plodding, embarrassing and vapid) save for "This is way #83 I can swing my dreadlocks about". Rage Against the Machine are abhorrent for the same reasons. Vacuous, uninteresting pap with political overtones, a musically "heavy but still street" backdrop to Zack starbuck's mocha preaching to the converted. Blaaaaaaahwuuuuuuwaaaaaaaaaaa. Aaron Spectre is a G. Fact. Anyone would think he raped your cattle and stole your wife!
