Big respect to all of ya...

7  General / The Forum / Re: Neil Kymatik has died on: April 10, 2009, 16:59:57
I haven't seen Neil in years now, but I'm terribly saddened to read this.  I met him not long after he moved to Bristol, through Pete and a shared love for proper drum n bass.  I though he was a top, top bloke and I have many happy memories from partying with him - him playing at Pinch's Context night, bass worship at the first Subloaded, getting trashed at Hijack NYE parties...  I really wish I'd kept in touch with him since I left Bristol.

There's a 4 day electronic music festival on where I live, which I reckon Neil would have loved.  Tomorrow night there is plenty of dubstep - I'll be thinking of him while I skank.

Laugh the radio 4 big bang week reporter that was reporting on the LHC is called 'Roland Peas'! quality!

I bumped into this dude in the control room of my experiment. We chatted about black holes and stuff. While we were talking, he somehow managed to wrap the lead for his microphone twice round his neck, pull it tight like he was garroting himself, then throw a cup of coffee all over himself. Interesting chap.

Book before you go and you should get what you want. A compromise is to take boots with you (need lots of time to get a good fit, easy to carry) but hire the board in the resort (pain to carry, quick to hire). Two Thumbs

16  General / The Forum / Re: 'Mountain Swooping' on: December 26, 2007, 02:23:34
I so want to try that out, how the fuck do you practice something like that?!

Start with a skydiving course in Russia - you can get a shedload of drops for not much dollar... A guy who posts here as Dirty Harry has been on one, I think. Once you've got a load of skydiving experience, you can progress to B.A.S.E. jumping, and wingsuit skydiving separately. Then once you're experienced in both, you can think about combining them.

Two Thumbs

PS - I've toyed with the idea of B.A.S.E. for years, because it's pretty obviously amazing, but I think I've pretty much decided now that it's simply too dangerous... I'm clearly getting old.

Ah I can't wait for stovies made out of yesterday's roast, mmmmmm

It is the leftovers of a roast, made into a dry stew the next day.

stovies! and bubble and squeak! aaaaaaaace. though i thought you were a veggie?
I don't put the meat in sillybuns. Smiley

given that stovies consist of "tatties, meat and dripping leftovers", aren't you just making, err, potatoes....? Bad Teeth

whether the British media is to blame for the hatred that still very much exists in this country.

Indisputably, unquestionably yes. The problem is that a lot of - well, let's just call them 'thick' - people imagine that the media has some kind of moral authority, like it knows better than they do. Rather than questioning, they just believe everything they read.

What's slightly odd is how the media is, largely, further to the right than the majority of Brits who are, I think, relatively fair-minded people - our newspapers don't reflect our nature. The Murdoch press has a lot to answer for in terms of stifling social progress in this country, and elsewhere.

Nah, the media reflects popular opinion as much as the other way round, so how can you say which is more to blame than the other? Laying the media to blame for racism is side-stepping the real issue, and counter-constructive, imho. Yeah, the problem is down to thick people - but they just fail to recognise their racism for what it is, rather than blindly believe what the papers tell them. If the papers told them something they didn't already agree with, they wouldn't read them - they don't by the Guardian, do they! Everyone has a genetic pre-disposition to favour people with genes closer to their own, or actively disfavour foreign genes, and that natural instinct frequently surfaces as racism. Just because it's based in nature doesn't mean anyone has an excuse for it, of course - civilised people should be able to recognise their base instincts, rise above them, understand what they can gain from a multi-cultured society even, and live harmoniously. But we're clearly not all civilised yet...

That article is ridiculous, or rather the research is.

"This suggests that, among older adults, there is an internal drive or need for sexual fulfilment," said Stacy Tessler Lindau, the study's leader.

Since when has sex been something only young people want? Does she expect to want to stop having sex just cos she's getting older?

Isn't the point that no-one had actually bothered to find out about OAPs sexual needs in that past? Given the responses on this thread, the study doesn't seem at all ridiculous to me.... (And conversely, if you expect your sex drive to remain full throttle when you're 75, the results of the study suggest you will be in for a shock).

I saw the Beasties last night at Montreux jazz festival.... Haven't really paid any attention to this lp, but fcuk me they rocked it live. It was billed as instrumental, so I was expecting to hear this album and not much else - but that was way out. They did play all the stuff off the album, but chopped it up with loads of old vocal classics, and stayed on stage for ages... Ended up moshing like a kid, until they played Sabotage, at which point I couldn't take any more... Wicked.  Slayer

46  General / The Forum / Re: The great climate change swindle on: July 11, 2007, 17:35:25
Right, exactly what is wrong with my staement? A greener planet Earth will need more plants, as plants are green. To get more plants, u need higher levels of CO2, as plants use CO2 to make their food. More CO2 means more plants. More plants, greener world.

How exactly is this stupid?

It's stupid because you're taking the word green literally for no good reason. 'Green' means minimising human disruption of the environment, stemming from a belief that this provides the best environment for us to live in. It doesn't mean taking positive action on behalf of plants - it is purely selfish. Yes, plants may benefit from increased levels of CO2 (I seem to recall reading somewhere that they appear to be photosynthesising more efficienctly in recent years) - but if we're not gonna be around to see them, who gives a f*ck?
47  General / The Forum / Re: There's a good solid scientific community on Hijack - Steorn's 'Orbo' Energy? on: July 05, 2007, 20:36:19
no time to read that article (too busy with the mofo science shit), but.....

there's no such thing as a physical law - they're just theories which we haven't yet disproved. that's all we can ever do - come up with theories and then look for phenomena that don't conform... in particle physics we do a lot of measuring stuff to really high precision in order to look for discrepancies between the theory and nature.

so there's nothing in principle wrong with someone finding something that breaks the first law of thermodynamics. but the chances of someone finding it in the kind of incredibly well observed system that these guys are on about is fcking miniscule. it's not like they're dealing with poorly understood or recently observed phenomena...
