8  Food for your Ears / Hijackers' Tunes and Mixes / Re: A Decade of… British D.I.Y. Music Culture (Pt1) on: March 16, 2015, 19:37:54
Farmfest celebrates 10 years of doin' it for themselves, with the first in a series of mixes exploring the ever present D.I.Y. music sub-culture that exists in this tiny complex island.

Part 1, a downtempo, bass heavy analogue journey, recorded with vinyl only, takes a look at the underground, self-released, hand stamped, micro-labels and producers that have kept on keepin' on, through the hard times, and the good.

Here's a little window into why each track was picked.
We hope you enjoy.
The series continues...

1 + 2.
Al Dobson JR - Nankoo On Keys + Santiago Black (Ptaki Version)
[Rhythm Section International] 2014
—
There is a real sound developing down in Peckham, South London. Lo-fi, off-kilter house, downtempo jazz and dub heavy grooves all blending into something fresh, but nostalgic. Bradley Zero is at the forefront with his Rhythm Section nights and now putting out some stunning work via the label of the same name. Beautiful remix production provided via Poland by Ptaki. (We're claiming the UK link via the label on this one).

3.
NY*NK - Empty Promises
[Intimate Friends] 2013
—
We don't know much about this producer from Newcastle. Luckily, we do know of his exceptional work on Marcel Vogel's labour of love label Intimate Friends. NY*NK, if you see this, get in touch!

4.
Linkwood - Hear The Sun
[Firecracker] 2007
—
Firecracker has been coming with soulful, cosmic dirt for over a decade now. Distributed in the underground and played in the underground! This beautifully illustrated 10" dropped in 2007.

5.
Swag - Mixtape Classics: Drill Bit
[Version Music] 2006
—
Swag were top of the DIY deep house scene back in 2006, along with Inland Knights, they killed it on a consistent basis. The vinyl even has the central piece die-cut to look like a giant tape cassette. Respect.

6.
Marathon Men - Bye Bye Babe
[Gamm] 2007
—
British producers Marathon Men dropped this oozy, deep soul number in 2007, on the legendary Swedish edit label GAMM.

7.
Romare - The Blues (It Began in Africa)
[Black Acre] 2012
—
Romare's breakthrough EP on Bristol's Black Acre Records. Ian and Black Acre consistently put out groundbreaking new material from emerging acts. Discovering producers like Romare before he got snapped up by the relative giant Ninja Tune. We were suitably impressed and got him down to the farm to play last year!

8.
Maya Jane Coles - Nobody Else (Youandewan Remix)
[Hype_Ltd] 2011
—
Probably the most talented and successful female dj/producer to come out of Britain in the last 10 years. This was the first release on Hyperdubs' limited release offshoot, Hype_ltd. Remixed here by Youandewan — born in Scotland, raised in Yorkshire!

9.
Rhythm & Sound - No Partial
[PK] 2010
—
We don't know a thing about this 10" vinyl, except that it's hand stamped, packaged in a yellow paper sleeve, and features the fattest dubby bassline of the last decade.

10.
Martin Hayes - Broken Memory
[Banoffee Pies] 2015
—
We end on a track from the recent Banoffee Pies vinyl. Ours being no 347 of 350, so we nearly missed the boat on this one. These guys balance running Dr Bannana, a clothing and hat brand, alongside the label, whilst putting on some of the best underground parties in Bristol. Bradley Zero played last month, and they have none other than the legend Bill Brewster for their next jaunt. We doth our caps!

I can't remember exactly...a hazy memory, but reckon about 10 years ago(isn)?

Have some friends from down that way that knew about it, and tagged along with them.

Ha, that must have been one of our very first years. We only started 9 years ago. We could almost call ourselves a 'proper' festival now Smiley

Hey Hijack folks

After the first rays of sunshine in the Uk we're very pleased to announce the Farmfestival DJ competition plus the addition of headliners Crazy P.

Farmfestival are looking for some fresh talent to add to their already stella DJ line-up for 2013. This is your chance to win a set in the main dance tent at Farmfestival, plus T-shirts and weekend tickets for you and 3 mates.

There's no restrictions on style or genre and certainly no restrictions on fun. This year's DJ headliners DJ Die, DJ Woody (AV Set), Chicken Lips, Luke Unabomber and Leftside Wobble plus new additions Crazy P showcase the eclectic party vibe that the festival has championed for the past 8 years.

Mixes will be judged on tracks, technique, and suitability for an early evening set at the festival.

All details for entry can be found at

Deadline for entry is Midnight Sunday 16th June, so get your friggin' mix on

Entering it's 7th year the festival remains adamantly sponsor-free and supportive of local produce; the lo-fi DIY aesthetic combining with the genre busting music policy to create the unique atmosphere. Previously quoted as one of the UK's best kept festival secrets (Dj Vadim / Venue Mag), the cat is slowly being let out of the bag.

Adult weekend tickets for Friday 27th & Saturday 28th July are priced at a double dip recession busting £40, including free camping and parking. Profits are donated to charities Practical Action, Somerset and Dorset Air Ambulance and The British Stammering Association.

Man Like Me

Newly signed to Mike Skinner's resurrected record label The Beats, Johnny Langer and Peter Duffy aka Man Like Me are set for a big summer. Their debut album, produced by Skinner himself, is set to drop under a wait of anticipation after first single 'Squeeze' was released in May. Originally sent to Skinner with a cheeky request to see if he fancied lending his midas touch to the single, he more than obliged. He loved the track so much he insisted on producing the whole album, and re-instated his defunct label (formerly home to Example and Professor Green) in order to release it.

Famed for mind blowing live performances and dubbed the “best damn live act in the UK” (Loud & Quiet), the Man Like Me boys know how to bring a party. With an increasing number of DJ bookings under their belts, they're building a reputation as connoisseurs as well as protagonists.

OntheROOF! delve into a weird and wonderful 3am discotheque selection of spaced out rhythms, deep bass and melancholic end of night vocals... embracing the spectrum of dance that will be on show afterdark, in the big tent at Farmfestival this year.

"Farmfestival started as a festival for friends, and has stayed that way 6 years on. It’s a festival that doesn’t believe in queues and inflated prices. We believe in our favourite selection of amazing alternative music, local produce, local charities and good honest fun in the Somerset countryside."

48  General / The Forum / Farmfestival - THIS WEEKEND – DJ Vadim, Soul of Man, The Disablists, Pardon my F on: July 11, 2011, 15:31:10
I'm new on here, but this looks like the place to be...

Wanted to get our tiny fest out there, with a couple of weeks to go.

We've got top local chaps, Pardon My French & Buoyancy Djing, alongside some other heavyweight Djs and headline acts.
But as an overview, Pete and the Pirates, Dodgy, Man Like Me, DJ Vadim, Soul of Man (of Fingerlickin' records fame), Scubaroots & Onlyjoe are playing.

Also other tents:
"filled with the joyous sounds of gypsie punk, experimental folk, big band escapades, high energy country rock, electronic pop, acapella trios and the occasional whimsical pop song"

WHOOP!

Great to see lots of small festivals surfacing this year. This £52, Wattsfest £50 (http://www.wattsfest.co.uk/) and Farm Festival £35 (http://www.farmfestival.co.uk/) are all looking great!

Any more quality little 'uns out there?

Really annoying this is on the same weekend as Farmfestival http://www.farmfestival.co.uk/
I'm biased as I've helped out on the above for a few years, but really wanted to check out Underhill... different concept, but I like it.
