Ok, so you have a wire frame representation of the entire detector. The white cylindrical bit in the centre is the silicon tracker, which is not being read-out right now (otherwise you'd see tracks going through it), the gray pointy bit is the LHC beam pipe, and the big blue ringy bits are the endcaps of the detector where the muon detectors sit.

Just outside the white cylinder in the middle is where you see the base of all the big blue bars. These bars represent the size of the energy deposits in the calorimeters. These blue bars do not represent the direction of travel of the particles... if this was a two-beam collision right in the centre of the detector then they would. But calorimeters only give you an energy readout, not a direction, and the collisions are not happening in the usual place right now.

Other than these blue bars, there are a few green bits here and there. These are muon detector stations providing hit information in the outer parts of the detector. Unfortunately it looks like a lot of the detector is not active right now (or the event display person disabled certain elements of the visualisation), otherwise this image would look a lot more complicated.

In this event I think the beam was stopped by one of the beam collimators just short of the detector. Hitting the collimators then causes a whole bunch of particles to spew into one end of the detector where they get absorbed in the calorimeters (and give you that slightly misleading impression of where the particles are coming from). If the tracker was switched on, you'd be able to see which direction the particles were actually coming from.

So many people have been waiting for those. By the time they're actually available, the true quad cores will almost be out.

I doubt the single die quads are going to be starting at £170...  And ultimately, there is always gonna be something better around the corner.
11  General / The Forum / Re: CRYSIS on: August 07, 2007, 09:59:47
For those planning on building a computer in the near future based around a Q6600, make sure you get a G0 stepping of this CPU.  The G0 stepping has significantly lower thermal dissipation, and thus has greater overclock potential.  Two Thumbs

 Huh

I think I know stuff, then am sorely embarassed!

A stepping in chip manufacturer parlance is just a version number.  It starts at A0 and minor revisions increment the number and major revisions increment the letter...  A0, A1, A2, B0, C0, etc.

The G0 stepping of the Q6600 outputs about 20 Watts less than prior versions (~95 instead of ~115), so you can probably overclock it to well in excess of 3 GHz, thereby turning a £170 CPU into one worth triple that money  Two Thumbs

Carly - I know the feeling!!!
1st -look at the type of hayfever tablets you are using - maybe you need to change
Piriton syrup is pretty good as I think you can take it more than once (only problem its drowsy so might need to check it out and see if they do non-drowsy) All tablets tend to work differently on people..

And 2nd STAY AWAY FROM NOSE SPRAY -It's bad mmkay!!
It clears for short period but it's really bad for you membranes as they just end up swelling up etc

Sorry but that is total crap.

It's not total crap - some people may be allergic to that stuff. And it's not juts sinex...

I just think it's rather bizarre that you are warning someone away from an established hayfever treatment that a doctor would likely prescribe...  It's just  Smashed.   Carly should at least try them... For me, they are the only thing that make the month of June bearable.

Whatever effects your body was producing following taking the first pill, will theoretically be doubled, or at very leased heightened by taking another one. You may not have felt anything because your blood concentration of the anit-histamines was below threshold level, but thats actually unlikely since I doubt you are giantess proportions. You wont overdose by taking two...but you really should check which brand your using. You'll probably get quite drowsy if you have another one now, and bear in mind all orally injested drugs have a 'coming up' period, so you might just have to wait a bit longer.

Sorry but that is total crap.  Nose sprays like Beconase contain cortico-steroids that reduce swelling and inflammation.  They are based around hormones given out by your own adrenal glands.  You can take them almost indefinitely with little ill effect, which people often have to do if they suffer from near-permanent rhinitis.

You may be confusing cortico-steroid sprays with Sinex, which does cause the symptoms you describe after prolonged usage.  Two Thumbs

The steroidal glands in your nasal membranes can become dependant on the added cortico-steroids your shoving up your nose. It can turn off the streoid producing genes (as they already believe that they are receiving enough of the steroid-producing-inducing hormone) meaning that your nasal membranes will be permanently inflamed, hence you will permanently need the spray (go without it for a while, and you might start to notice the inflamation again)

Granted, if you are on some high dosage this is no-doubt possible.  I've had to take nose-sprays stronger than Beconase for some time, and I'm yet to see the leaflet that comes with the spray ever mentioning this as being a long-term usage problem.  I've also never noticed this effect when I stop taking the sprays.  It's definitely true for Sinex though, which you can quickly become reliant on... I found this out the hard way.  Doh!

Also, if you are taking hayfever remedies, take them regularly, not just when you start feeling the symptoms.  Makes a big difference.  You're going to need to take them for at least the whole of this month, I imagine.

My Mum's a teacher, she's told me some really sad stories. The worst one that stuck in my mind was when a girl of 13 was getting abused by her Mum' boyfriend. The signs started when he removed all doors from all rooms in the house, including the bathroom. The girl finally mustered up the courage to report him, and he was sent to prison. When he was due out a meeting was called between the Mum and the Social Services because the bloke wanted to move back into the house but obviously couldn't be under the same roof as the girl. The Mums' actual words were "well where else is he going to go?", so the girl was put into care. That's right, the Mum (I struggle to call her that really) chose a paedo over her own abused daughter.
Another one was at a parents evening where this woman who at one point had a kid in every year, turned up with a bulging belly. A teacher brought the pregnancy subject up and she replied "yeah the kids wanted a dog, but I thought a baby would do for something for them to play with instead". In the same conversation the subject of who the father was was brought up and she said "you know how it is, when you eat a can of beans you don't know which one makes you fart do you?"
Ok, so I don't have any kids so theoretically I shouldn't judge but seriously!

If it makes you feel any better, I was recently talking to a friend of mine who is doing a PGCE at this particularly shatola school.  Apparently parents have not been allowed onto the school grounds for some years now, due to the number of fights it was causing.  Fights between the parents that is.  Oh my! That's so funny, but EEEEEEEEEEEK!  The no-parents policy was started after a particularly horrendous parents' evening where the police were called after a massive brawl between parents kicked off.  Apparently the banning of both parents' evening, and parents entirely, went down pretty well with the staff, who were already too scared to say anything even remotely negative to the parents about their children (or possibly their parenting...).

It's a great example to set to your kids isn't it?   I am laughing, but I am also sad I am laughing, but I am also sad I am laughing, but I am also sad

there is position, energy, and momentum resolution that you could potentially be talking about.

49  General / The Forum / Re: Me, Roadkill and Fraz's experiment on: May 14, 2007, 15:27:39
I was just wondering about the scale of the big blue bits round the edge.
Bearing in mind its a subatomic partical accelerator I thought it might be tiny.

But from what you're saying, each one of those blue Muon detector squares is about 10inchs square?
and the middle bit has detector plates of about an inch?

I'm a pc nerd so resolution is everything  NERD ALERT!

Resolution of the detector is compilcated... as there is position, energy, and momentum resolution that you could potentially be talking about.  In the particle tracker at the centre, the position resolution is ~10 micro-metres.  For the calorimeters, it is energy resolution that is really important, not so much the position, which is why those big blue columns (that represent the amount of energy) are quite coarse in terms of their segmentation - I guess your 10inch square estimate is about right... I can't remember.  And then in the muon chambers (represented by those floating red rectangles), the position resolution is ~100 micro-metres.
50  General / The Forum / Re: Me, Roadkill and Fraz's experiment on: May 14, 2007, 14:59:36
so how big is the actual detector assembly (not all the HUGE electromagnets) just the detector, like the semiconductor sensor chip in a digital camera?

The detectors are built within/around the electromagnet. The particle tracker at the centre is about 6 metres long with a diameter of about 2.5 metres, and in the most basic terms could be considered the mother of all digital cameras.  Around that are the calorimeters, then the magnet (13m long, 6m diameter), then the muon chambers which go out to about 7.5 metres from the centre.  In total the detector is about 24 metres long, and 15 metres high, and weighs ~15000 tonnes.  It's fucking gert basically.
