90's Hip Hop /Hip-Hop/Rap /Boom Bap /Hip Hop /Retrospective

Here is a little mid 90's hip-hop mix that I put together for an upcoming book launch to reflect the theme of the book and some of my own influences of the period. Mostly classic boom bap tunes and heavily based on the production talents of DJ Premier there are a couple of forgotten gems hidden away amongst some of the more obvious picks. Enjoy!

::STOP PRESS:: THE CORRESPONDENTS ARE HERE TO START THE PARTY!!

DJ/MC duo, THE CORRESPONDENTS have bean tearing up various festivals all summer and now FFTT are proud to give them their Bristol Cherry to pop in public!

Mr Bruce and Mr Chuckles collaborate to revamp vintage sounds for the modern ear. Resuscitating sampled relics with squelchy synths over dusty drum loops they’ve depictied the trials and errors of Love, Lust and Loss over foot-tapping toe curling "get your brogues on" dance floor Electro Swing.

Starting out in November 2007, old friends Mr Bruce and Mr Chuckles, returned to London after a firm schooling at their respective Universities. In Leeds Mr Chuckles had been tinkering with the sounds of Hip Hop, Jazz and Dance music for several years, meanwhile further North in Edinburgh Mr Bruce exerted his vocal dexterity over Drum 'n' Bass, Breaks & Funk. The unlikely pair cut their teeth at a few parties and decided to cement the live performance relationship in their makeshift recording studio. Since then tracks have been recorded, stages have been stomped and knees have hit nipples.

Joining them for the night are bristol's very own Lo-Fi dons SYTE & THE SOUND. Mixing up strong percussion, funky grooves, beautiful, poetic vocals and shimmering electronics – with occasional swings into thrash rock and ambient soundscapes their sound is in short, the New Trip-Hop.

Since Syte and the Sound exploded onto the scene (forming in early 2009) they have earnt their status as a tour-de-force both live and on record and we are looking forward to them kick-starting the night alongside FFTT DJ's Mr Lingo and Ewan Hoozami on deck duty for the night.

::STOP PRESS:: FFTT XXL BACK FROM THE SUMMER BREAK WITH ANOTHER HUGE FUNK BAND & SOUL LEGEND

FFTT have spent the summer break hitting the top UK festivals large and small in pursuit of the best new and known bands to bring to the Bristol scene. The next instalment of XXL features SPEEDOMETER, the UK's premier funk band! Having started out as a quartet gigging in small clubs in the Southeast of England, playing classic funk tunes by artists such as The Meters and The JBs, the band soon expanded, adding the now renowned horn section (The Rev Horns) and vocalists (The Speedettes), enabling them to deliver the powerhouse deep funk sound they're known for today.

Over the years SPEEDOMETER have worked with many of the US funk legends including Sir Joe Quarterman, Eddie Bo, Sharon Jones and soul sister number one Marva Whitney. More recently they have been gigging and cutting tracks with Robert Moore. All of the artists they have worked with have been blown away by their authenticity to the original soul-funk sound. Tonight they join forces with MARTHA HIGH.

Martha has sung with Soul Legends including James Brown, Marva Whitney, Lyn Collins, Bobby Byrd, Gwen McCrae and RAMP. During her collaboration with Soulpower, High performed all across Europe and even performed in Africa, backed by the Soulpower Allstars. In February 2005, High embarked on the "James Brown's Funky Divas Tour" in Europe, sharing the stage with her friend Lyn Collins. Today, Martha continues to tour the world, notably with Pee Wee Ellis as part of his Still Black, Still Proud show and she featured at the 2008 Harbour Festival here in Bristol.

Joining these heavyweight funkateers are MANGO FACTORY; an impressive 9 piece outfit who take the finest ingredients from various genres (Funk, Latin, Jazz, Ska and Reggae to name a few) and smash them together to create a dancefloor-filling extravaganza of epic proportions. This intriguing mix of tight rhythms, dynamic arrangements and multi-instrumental fireworks also includes vocal illuminations from two of Bristol’s finest vocalists in Ben Sayer and Aimee Mukherjee.

As ever no FFTT night would be the same without the FFTT DJs bringing their selections of dancefloor funk and soul to the fore, so expect them to be there before and after the bands and into the wee hours.

:STOP PRESS: FUNK FROM THE TRUNK CELEBRATE 5 YEARS OF GOOD TIMES

It doesn't seem possible.... has it really been 5 years since we started off rocking the upstairs bar at Catch22 in Shoreditch?? September 19th 2005? For some of us that seems like it was only yesterday, for others it seems like an age ago!

FFTT has been bringing the good times live and direct to your ears for all this time, so we thought we should celebrate in the only way we know how; some quality tunes dusted off and played by the people that have been involved over the last 5 years! Add an internationaly known DJ of rare talent, some cans of pop & fizz and you have the perfect recipie to kick off the Bris Fest weekend.

SMOOVE aka Steven Moove is a man who really needs no introduction. With a music career spanning the 1990's with Big Life Records as Ultragroove and remxiing Digital Underground's "No Nose Job" through to 2001 and signing a deal with Acid Jazz Records. In 2006 he started "Wack Records" releasing the highly acclaimed series of remix EP's before finaly starting work on "Antique Soul" by Smoove & Turrell released on Jalapeno Records.

The acclaimed success of Smoove & Turrell coupled with over 20 years of DJing have taken Smoove all over the globe playing regular events in Germany, Lithuania, Italy, France, Poland, Portugal, Greece, Russia, Hungary, Switzerland and Austria, as well as all the big festivals such as the Big Chill & Glastonbury.

As well as Smoove on the decks the full allumni of FFTT DJ's will be on hand as well as a couple of special guests to keep everyone happy on both floors of the Big Chill through till chucking out time and our eventual date with destiny aboard the SS Hangover for our Brisfest Boat Party.
