Wez G - Sizzling Summer (Chillout DJ Mix)

2  Food for your Ears / Hijackers' Tunes and Mixes / Wez G - Sexy Disco Machines (DJ Set) on: June 02, 2012, 00:06:11

Wez G - Sexy Disco Machines

There's been a bit of a delay in getting this latest mix together as I've been busy enhancing the Wez G studio, spending over £4000 on it in the past month... I've been learning how to use all the new gadgets and this has sidetracked me from doing DJ mixes... Anyway, back with a bang and this funky mix spans from nice modern disco funk beats through to heavy hitting techno, not forgetting the awesome Justine - Be Sexy from 1992 which I burned from vinyl... I'm hoping my new kit will produce some future bangers for your aural pleasure and I'll be hard at work, creating... Meanwhile, sink your teeth into 'Sexy Disco Machines'.

Creating playlists is like running a well-drilled vinyl rack and choosing 100 tunes to fill a box is alwasy a tough thing to do... The most frustrating thing I've found with Traktor is that I've lost all my playlists with software failures in the past... I've just invested ina  a macbook Pro now though and with a time machine backup I hope never to lose the playlists. I guess that software and hardware failure is a major drawback with digital... Other than the odd pop and crackle, you rarely get problems with vinyl.
4  General / The Forum / Re: Vinyl Digitisation mission on: April 20, 2012, 12:48:19
Nice to see my old matey Ironside in here...

I bought Traktor Scratch with the vinyl medium but after investing in some MIDI equipment could no longer see the need for using the technics, other than for nostalgia purposes... Yes, people pour scorn on beatsynching etc, but using Traktor in its purist form introduces new elements to DJing, such as creative looping, which once you get into properly can be great fun....

I don't intend ever stopping adding to my record collection and will never sell it, but being able to record properly to digital these days is a necessary task as the future of DJing must surely lie with the likes of Traktor and Serato... I can even see CD decks being eventiually phased out... At the end of the day on price alone for CD decks, CDs are a superceded medium for me.

I always think that vinyl taught DJs will excel more on the likes of Traktor, certainly for as long as the early turntable sound can be remembered but it will be interesting to see how the future generation of DJs develop, those who can claim the pure digital medium as their own...
5  General / The Forum / Re: Vinyl Digitisation mission on: April 20, 2012, 09:20:48
I think it's important for a DJ to be versatile... It'd be nice to be able to perfectly tailor a set to the crowd's needs... What do u do for example if you head off on a world tour? With one box of records your options are limited... But with 50 000 records in a multitude of genres, you'll always find work...
6  General / The Forum / Re: Vinyl Digitisation mission on: April 19, 2012, 17:42:27
As much as I loved buying vinyl in record shops and believe the whole social side of that was amazing... Nowadays, where do you go to get vinyl? I used to shop at Plastic Fantastic (Covent Garden and later plastic-music.co.uk) , also Bang Bang, Bristol... Everywhere's closed. Whereas Beatport goes from strength to strength and has almost total industry support... It is fast efficient and once you learn how to shop there properly your choice is endless.... Ultimately you save money as it's a lot cheaper... When I stopped buying vinyl it was £8 a pop - you can pick up what you want for about £2 at beatport... I think I prefer digital as it is an easier medium to buy.

Also - back to the matter at hand - how could i have ever taken my entire record collection on the move with me? Once it's burnt that will bee a reality... As a vinyl DJ you were restricted to about 100 records in a damned heavy box... No backup either in case of theft and I had a whole A-box stolen once too
7  General / The Forum / Re: Vinyl Digitisation mission on: April 19, 2012, 17:19:12
I swore blind at one stage that I'd never change to CDs or digital and stick with the faithful vinyl... But after playing around with a cracked copy of traktor about2 years ago I decided to take the plunge and put the funds for my record buying budget into getting the original Traktor (with vinyl emulation) plus a load of MIDI equipment... Nowadays I couldn't be without Traktor and feel that it makes digital DJing superior to the old style vinyl. there are drawbacks in that you don't get a nice hard format music collection and it maybe isn't as touchey feeley handson as vinyl but there are a new set of skills to learn and once you get going you realise that digital DJing is a more versatile option.. No turning back now...
8  General / The Forum / Re: Vinyl Digitisation mission on: April 19, 2012, 15:34:52
Let me get through my collection and then maybe I'll think of setting up a business... If you live over in Bristol - you could maybe drive over to me the other side of the bridge in Caldicot and drop off a load of vinyl and I could do them... Trouble is - while I'm burning vinyl I can't produce any music... And I've just bought Maschine and am eager to start churning out more stuff.... As ever - it's finding the hours in the day to do all your shit...
9  General / The Forum / Re: Vinyl Digitisation mission on: April 19, 2012, 14:39:32
I thought of offering it as a professional service - but I figured that there'd be some huge transportation costs shifting vinyl collections back and for... I might consider it - though I'd hate to go through 2000 shitty records - my own are only just bearable... lol
10  General / The Forum / Re: Vinyl Digitisation mission on: April 19, 2012, 13:47:48
Most of my house vinyl wouldn't be posted up I guess... I don't know whether I want to create a big torrent and share everything - I'll see how generous i feel once all is done... It'd be pretty huge though as each wav is around 70mb - I have to yet decide whether to downsize them all to mp3 also... I guess one stage at a time...
11  General / The Forum / Re: Vinyl Digitisation mission on: April 19, 2012, 13:22:54
It's nice doing it yourself as you can get it all consistent - I think if you aim to play out with the wavs you really need to make sure you get all the levels correct... Can you trust other people's work? If a job is worth doing then do it yourself for the best results  ... Wink lol
12  General / The Forum / Vinyl Digitisation mission on: April 19, 2012, 13:11:25
Just started last week on burning my vinyl collection to digital wavs.. I’m using Ableton with the decks going straight into the PC via an audio 8 soundcard input. Having to record and then level off, render to wav, obviously getting all the track name details correct…  It’s a good excuse to have a good listen to some great old classics but is a bit tiresome… I’m getting through maybe 50 tunes a day but there’s thousands of vinyl lurking around my house, waiting to be done… Had a few nasty scratches I’ve had to iron out with a warm soapy sponge… Just hoping that Traktor will pick up the correct bpm analysis or it will be manual djing with the new wavs… Be lovely to take the whole collection out on the road eventually and can’t wait for that to happen.

13  Food for your Ears / Hijackers' Tunes and Mixes / Wez G - Forefathers Of Funk (DJ Set) on: April 16, 2012, 21:22:14

Well - It's been a busy week... My new Native Instruments Maschine turned up and I've been busy learning that - the aim is to develop my digital DJing to incorporate Maschine eventually and it should certainly revolutionise the Wez G production methods also... Apart from that I've been busy researching on ancestry dot com and managed to trace my lineage back to James I of Scotland... It's an amazing and addictive fun site - well worth a go... Back on Beatport and all the decent tracks were hiding away in the Indie Dance / Nudisco section. My style seems to migrate departments there all the time. We have a variety of funky disco numbers, a shift away from the progginess of the last Alien Abduction mix. I now proudly present to you: Forefathers Of Funk - Enjoy!

14  Food for your Ears / Hijackers' Tunes and Mixes / Wez G - Alien Abduction (DJ Set) on: April 01, 2012, 09:15:39

A few years ago I underwent an Ayahuasca session and was induced into the world of shamanism. It was great except for the plant taking complete control of your body and mind proved a bit daunting around six months later when I had a flashback from my experience and trekked up into the local woods where I had an alien abduction experience. I was surrounding by probing Chinese Red Army soldiers inspecting my body and faced an attack of flying red dragons. I eventually returned intact from the forest, leaving a trail of floating light beings in my wake. As far as alien abudctions go I think that sometimes in today's music technology world, surrounded by weird bits of kit and flashing lights, the modern DJ is essentially flying a spaceship through the boundaries of the dimensions. I hope that this little mix will trancendentally induce you into the weird and wacky world of Wez G and that you yourselves might experience an enlightening moment or two upon your travels. You can read more about the alien abduction experience at http://wezg.blogspot.co.uk/2009/02/chinese-military-and-alien-abduction.html

17  Food for your Ears / Hijackers' Tunes and Mixes / Wez G - Little Disco Biscuit (DJ Set) on: September 29, 2011, 17:08:37

Wez G - Little Disco Biscuit

The best time for dance music in my opinion was the early 1990s. It was the heyday of the Rave Scene and dancefloors were packed with sky high dancing bods. The reason I like this period is not that the floors were filled with ecstasy takers, but that the music was at its peak. Dubby loops of bass and funk with a  constant circular rhythm in the tents and clubs drove the E'd up crowd into a frenzy. The beats suited the experience of everyone - It was total unity and I think that over the years as the government has killed off the scene with various parliamentary acts (eg Criminal Justice Act 1994) and the total media frenzied attack on ecstasy, claiming it killed you, and the general shift towards commercialism and business, moved the music towards a different direction. Of course, post 1997 - even the dealers were selling ketamine and calling it ecstasy...It's as if the disco biscuits disappeared overnight.  I think on the music front the DJs forgot the buzz which caused the whole vibe and we saw a scattering of genres and pigeonholing and musical snobbery... Well - a couple of decades on from that and digging about on Beatport, I noticed a trend back towards the old style music. Loops of bass hooks and that driving groove have reappeared. It's that old Italian sound which is so inspiring. Now most of it seems to be categorised as techno or deep house... but it seems the same old stuff that DJs from Laurent Garnier to Easygroove, from Carl Cox to Sasha, all used to bang out.

In this mix I've cut up a few old tracks with the new flavours plus slipped in a  special edit from a live Universe Rave that took place only a few miles away from me in Magor in South Wales in the summer of 1992...

In the news recently there have been claims that Ecstasy cures cancer 100% guaranteed so maybe the pop idol generation will be ditching X-Factor, slipping on their shiny shirts and getting back to a diet of disco biscuits... Who knows? As long as good music thrives and Simon Cowell goes bankrupt I don't mind one little bit.

19  Food for your Ears / Hijackers' Tunes and Mixes / Wez G - Free The Planet (DJ Set) on: September 21, 2011, 04:51:49

Wez G - Free The Planet

It's been a long summer and there's been a break in my regular mixes. Anyway I'm back with a bang and keen to 'Free The Planet'. Watching the news here in the UK over the past year or so and I am detecting a disturbing pattern of police brutality and the erosion of our fundamental human rights. George Orwell's '1984' warns of a 'Big Brother' society where every thought is monitored and people punished for the most minor of detours from the authorities' policies. To me house music represents freedom. The feeling of unity you can only experience in the middle of the dancefloor gives people breath and helps you to evade the oppression of our masters. I don't want everyone to listen to this and go out smashing the windows in JJB Sports for some new trainers in a violent orgy of looting. Just turn on the speakers, enjoy what (good) summer weather we have left and chill to the sounds of liberty.

Wez G - Network Transmit

Global Communication has never been more open... In the past decade we have experienced a worldwide internet revolution that has widened our horizons more than ever before. At the touch of a button you can meet and speak to people on the other side of the planet via the multitude of ever-expanding social networks. DJs have to take advantage of this great leap forward and broadcast to the wide world. It's a weird phenomenon, recording a little DJ Mix, clicking a few buttons and then getting feedback from an audience that you don't see in reality, that usually comes from an completely different civilization and way of life. It's a real eyeopener but one that I enjoy. Help distribute this mix to your friends, wherever you may be listening. The mix represents the current sounds of house music as heard by my ears, here in a tiny Welsh village called Caldicot.

22  Food for your Ears / Hijackers' Tunes and Mixes / Wez G - Spooky Rhythm (DJ Set) on: May 10, 2011, 21:09:45

Wez G - Spooky Rhythm

Haunted House?  Well - for want of a better title - I though there was some spooky theme going on in the track titles for this deep and funky mix which explores some of the finer elements of 2011 deep house, building to a crescendo with a classic remake of Superchumbo's Revolution, concluding with one of the finer tracks from Guy J's new 1000 words album. Don't miss out on my old Swedish matey Nibc's nice remix on his own label, Trunkfunk, one to watch out for as it booms out sounds from Berlin. Get with the Spooky Rhythm...

Wez G - True Romance

The songs included on this mix seemed to me to have a lovey dovey theme and feel so hence the title 'True Romance'. 25  Food for your Ears / Hijackers' Tunes and Mixes / Wez G - Solar Flare (DJ Set) on: April 11, 2011, 11:54:55
Wez G - Solar Flare

A solar flare is a sudden brightening observed over the Sun surface, which is interpreted as a release of a massive amount of energy. Here in the UK we are experiencing a great deal of sunshine and warmth which is unusual for this time of year. Whereas others are nipping off to the beach, I decided to stay indoors and record a nice little DJ Mix, full of energy, ideal to get people moving after they've munched all their barbecue burgers.

Matt Springfield is a French singer who asked me to do a remix of his hit record 'Things I've Said'

It is currently doing well in Europe... Hopefully this remix will get signed to a decent label somewhere.

27  Food for your Ears / Hijackers' Tunes and Mixes / Wez G - Stroll In The Park (DJ Set) on: March 28, 2011, 14:29:01
Wez G - Stroll In The Park

When I release a DJ Mix across the internet I picture listeners tuned in on their ipods as they go about their day to day lives, all across the world... For this mix there is a certain mellow ambience and I could see people tuning in as they walk through a nice park, soaking up the natural surroundings while they get into the deep groove I've created. There's lots of funky basslines interspersed with lush vocals and a nice overall floaty feel. Enjoy! ... And watch out for the bears!

Wez G - Bringing Down The House

A journey through house, from disco and deep through to upfront prog and breakbeat. This is a mix I was excited to do as I managed to fit in three of my own productions (a bootleg, a remix and an original), also a song by Tricia Lee Kelshall, the vocalist I manage. The mixing is back to normal two decks as I feel that sometimes you lose the flavour of a set by overcomplicating things. Turn up your speakers and Bring Down The House!

30  Food for your Ears / Hijackers' Tunes and Mixes / Wez G - Island Hop (Chillout DJ Mix) on: January 29, 2011, 13:14:05
Wez G - Island Hop

A few years ago I went Island hopping in the South Pacific... It's great fun, a perfect paradise... This soundtrack is ideal for lazing away on a yacht, checking into the beaches, diving in coral reefs and catching a bit of surf... OK - It is winter, but in the South Pacific it's always hot and Snow White Winter Chill (my previous chillout mix) was received well so I thought it about time to treat you to some more mellow vibes... There are sounds across the board with Bristol represented by Portishead, Thievery Corporation and Röyksopp among the big guns, and a Chris Rea bootie chucked in also... It hops from a calm 90bpm up to a full flow 132 bpm, towards the end. It's a perfect soundtrack to the start of your weekend as you prepare to go out somewhere nice. Tropical Island bliss with Wez G... Keep Hopping!
