2  General / The Forum / SBTRKT (live) in Bristol (06/10/11) on: August 12, 2011, 16:07:12

"Most of my ideas are written at night" explains SBTRKT. "Late at night, when everything around is silent - that atmosphere is where most of this record came from, and for me it explains it's sound"

SBTRKT is no stranger to writing, recording and releasing music. To date he's had multiple releases on Brainmath, Numbers, Ramp, Monkeytown and now home label Young Turks. Add to that reworkings of Radiohead and Goldie, and remixes of Modeselektor... However, this is his first full length album. "This release is the culmination of a longer period of constant writing and collaboration, tracks on previous EPs were written as singular pieces. This record is much more of a whole project, more representative of my thoughts and ideas as an artist and each track was completed with the aim to be coherent together."

Like most of the most exciting music around today, the story starts from the sound system of Plastic People, an east London club both underground in location and in the music it specialises in. It was here that SBTRKT met Tic (a&r for Young Turks Records) and was schooled by the sounds that came pulsing from the clubs now infamous speakers. It was through Tic that he met Sampha one of the key collaborators on the album and one half of the SBTRKT live show. Alongside Sampha, Roses Gabor and Jessie Ware, the album track 'Wildfire' features Little Dragon and the imitable voice of Yukimi Nagano. "I'm a big fan of their musical ethos so to collaborate with them has been an ambition for a while. It has been really interesting seeing how our two worlds could co-exist.

Through the years, and his development as an artist and producer in his own right, SBTRKT has worked with collaborators both sonic and visual to emphasise his ideas and vision. The performance and visual style has also become an essential part of this setup. Performing in his trademark tribal mask, watching SBTRKT translate his sound live is opposed to what one would expect from the traditional producer / DJ. "The live show is an expansion of what has been created in the studio and the tools I've used to make them. Just because a song has been created with a laptop, it doesn't mean that is the best way to perform it live, but for me, neither is bringing in a 5 piece band to re-interpret your songs. I see live shows in a very different light to producing in a studio as it's about translating into a medium for performance. The basic setup is myself on an acoustic drum kit with extra electronic triggers, and Sampha on 2 keyboards and vocals.... although it's constantly developing whilst we learn new ways to perform songs and experiment with new ways to route our live audio."

Speaking about his mask, he explains "...it reflects that in worldwide tribal societies that wearing a specific mask would evoke the spirit of an ancestor or animal, and is prominently used in ceremony and celebration. It’s about uplifting the soul and challenging the normality of electronic music and production.”

SBTRKT's debut album pulls off a series of impressive feats: it's bursting with fresh ideas, and yet it sounds immediately familiar. It's sound-patterns and rhythms can easily soundtrack the ecstatic hands in the air dance floor moments as well as reliving the monotony of the morning commute. It's influences are incorporated with subtlety and sophistication: dense enough to interpret, light enough to dance to.

20  General / The Forum / Re: Facebook Groups vs Pages (YAWN) on: April 18, 2011, 13:11:26
To add further confusion they have changed the settings so you can no longer create a new 'old-style' group - instead you have to create a 'new group' - which are particularly annoying as instead of inviting people to join you can automatically add (or be added) by the group admin - hence the increasing spam factor of Facebook.

But yes - in answer to your original question - create a page and start to use it alongside your existing group.

Create your events via the group (so you can invite all of the original group members), message out from the group, but post your status updates, events, upload content etc via the page.

One helpful thing with the Pages is that once you have over 25 people 'linking' your page you can give the page a specific url - eg. (in your case for example) www.facebook.com/dirtyoldtownbristol which is alot easier to direct people to than http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=58407869469

Dealmaker Records present:

Scorzayzee (Scor-zay-zee) is a Nottingham-based rapper, well known for his connection with the now defunct Notts supergroup Out Da Ville alongside artists such as C-mone, Lee Ramsay and Karizma.

Known for his multi-syllabic style and political view points he caused controversy in 2003 with his P-Brothers produced cut 'Great Britain' - a scathing response to the Iraqi war and hypocrisy amongst the country's elite. Many believe this to be his masterpiece. This was an anti-establishment rant against the Queen, Tony Blair, the B.N.P., Freemasons and a few other people he threw into the equation. It gained him plenty of attention, getting picked up by Radio 1, 1xtra and even more hysterically the Daily Telegraph.

The lyrics to `Great Britain' seem particularly poignant in this age of war and terror. It was a rally cry, a call to arms from a voice of dissatisfied British youth. The song ultimately questions how a country's system of government can act so directly in opposition to the wishes of so may of those it represents.

It was something of a surprise therefore, when following his greatest success yet, Scorzayzee decided to call it a day and retire from rapping after this song. Rumours about his conversion to Islam, knocks on the door from federal officers and plenty more hype did nothing to calm the storm.

The track gained a surprise amount of love from major radio stations and the Hip-Hop fraternity and even got played on Radio 1.

In a recent interview Scorzayzee had this to say:
"If I hear a beat and I get an idea again I'll write another tune and put it out. But at the moment I've just got nothing that I want to say. I don't want to talk for the sake of it. I don't want to just make tunes for the sake of it, I want to do something special. All I know is that if I do anything else, it's got to be worth coming back from retirement to say it."

Phi Life Cypher is a British hip hop group based in Luton, comprising two MCs, Si Phili and Life MC, and DJ Nappa. The trio started making music together around 1996, and since have had much success on the UK underground circuit. Phi-Life Cypher made it the final of Tim Westwood's Talent 2000 competition and ripping the mic on DJ Skitz's seminal posse cut 'Fingerprints of the Gods' projected them to the upper realms of the UK Hip Hop scene.

Phi Life Cypher released "Clint Eastwood" the track on the Gorillaz' G-Sides, a compilation of the B-sides from the first three singles was released in Japan and quickly followed with international releases in early 2002. The new year also saw a performance at the 2002 Brit Awards, featuring the band in 3D animation, weaving in and out of each other on four large screens along with rap accompaniment by Phi Life Cypher.

The group has toured with and appeared on tracks by Gorillaz and DJ Vadim

Growing up in Nottingham, Cappo originally started out as a graffiti writer, but soon his love of hip hop culture led him to take on the challenge of MCing. By 1995, he was rapping every day, honing his craft until his live debut at Nottingham Carnival, in the summer of 1997. Within a year, he had built himself a fearsome reputation on the Nottingham open mic scene, and put out a 3-track demo EP, followed by his self-financed debut, ‘The Cap Tape Volume One’. A deal with Son Records followed, resulting in the release of the ‘Cap 3000’ and ‘Codex’ EPs in 1999 and 2000, before hooking up with the mighty P Brothers for guest appearances on their Heavy Bronx Experience releases. By now, Cappo’s fearless lyricism and defiant flow had earned him a reputation not just around Nottingham, but around the country. His debut LP, ‘Spaz The World’, was two-and-a-half years in the making before Zebra Traffic picked it up for release: described by no less a figure than Mr Scruff as “The best hip hop LP I’ve heard in ages”, Spaz The World cemented Cappo’s position as one of the very best MCs this country has to offer. The album spans the entire spectrum of hip hop, from the pounding beats of IDST to the reflective and intelligent lyrics of Watership Down, inspired by the loss of Cappo’s father when he was young. 12” releases ‘Learn To Be Strong’ and “Grand Final” not only broke Cappo to a wider audience than ever before, storming clubs up and down the country, but also helped cement the album’s place as a stone-cold UK classic, certain to be dug up and revered by hip hop heads for decades to come.

Inkrument are the result of a musical pairing of Beat-making, Beat boxing extraordinaire Foz and the lyrically diverse MC -- Samwise – ‘Rrrare’ is a hip hop album in its truest, most honest form.

What makes Samwise more compelling than the next MC is his ability to not only be able to write a sick hook – but his lyrical depth. Every verse on Rrrare gets better with repeated playings, Whether politically, socially or personally focused: the one guarantee is that he will make you listen!

Foz provides the backdrop for Samwise’ flows and has been involved in music for most of his life. Former UK beatbox Champion, Foz spread his wings in to production in 2004, drawing influence from the classic generation of producers (you know who we mean). Samwise and Foz met in 2006, and Inkrument was born. Foz’s beats seem to gel perfectly with Samwise’s flows making interesting and intelligent, yet always entertaining, positive Hip Hop.

Adding DJ Dan Rattomatic to the mix polishes off the album – Rrrare is laced with the cuts from the legendary Nottingham DJ who is also the integral part of the live show. To see Inkrument live is to understand the dynamic of the group a lot more – it’s not your average hip hop show (no screw faced, cocky MC’s demanding respect for turning up) but a carefully planned out musical journey, incorporating not only the beats and rhymes, but beatboxing, guitar, scratch routines, crowd participation and energy. It further proves that Inkrument do not take their audience for granted and reflects the intensity and passion of ‘Rrrare’.

‘Rrrare’ was mixed and mastered by one of the UK’s most prolific up and coming production team – TheElementz. Guaranteed every time.

Listen to ‘Rrrare’. It’s a quality hip hop album that would remind even the most cynical of hip hop fans (as well as music fans), that music can be serious, political and socially aware, as well as entertaining, fun and energetic.

"It's a kind of an unwritten rule but by and large to become a big DJ in dubstep you need either two things: An incredible arsenal of new dubplates, or a talent for production such that you have, well, an incredible arsenal of new dubplates. But recently a DJ has managed a steep climb up the scene's ranks without either. He is DJ Oneman." - Martin Clark, Pitchfork.
